It’s interesting how ones perspective evolves with time. How many experiences become less important while others take on new meaning. For instance, the age old story of . A canister of oil that supposedly provided light for the Ner Tamid (everlasting light) for eight days instead of one. Who would’ve thought that 2000+ years later, this ‘miracle’, would continue to be celebrated by millions of people globally, with the lighting of Hannukiyot. Perhaps the miracle could be explained today scientifically. Perhaps the miracle wasn’t the light after all, but the consequences of the experience. 2000 years of Jewish unity, at least annually for 8 nights.

I used to think of the young Maccabean fighters as heroes of our people, perhaps dressed in the superhero garb of the day, fighting off the evil Roman invaders. No longer though. Today my superheroes are the people who through small acts which may appear inconsequential impact the lives of those around them. My superheroes of today are those members of our Temple family who selflessly volunteer to help people. The Shiva ladies who are there at our saddest times, our seniors who at the drop of the hat assemble to stuff envelopes, those who drive others to Temple, those who open their homes to others for meals, those who make discrete contributions to those in need without the desire for recognition.

Perhaps at this time more than any other, these are the superheroes we so desperately need. If you’re interested in making a difference, please call us, so we can help channel your superhero power.

However, somehow, we have lost the essence of Hanukkah’s holiness and the real meaning of the chag. We live in a time where we don’t actually believe in miracles and FESTIVAL OF 1000 LIGHTS Hanukkah has become the holiday of gift-giving.

So how do we bring holiness into our lives through Hanukkah? How do we create opportunities to make this holiday relevant and meaningful? I personally believe that Judaism fills us with so many opportunities to turn our lives into holy moments, but we just don’t pay attention!

A few weeks ago while teaching our teens about how God responds to our prayers, we embarked on a very deep conversation: “When we pray to God for courage, will God respond to our prayers by giving us courage or opportunities to be courageous? When we pray to God to help us pass a test, will God give us an A or will help us find VALERIA MICHANIE opportunities to study and learn for the test? RELIGIOUS SCHOOL DIRECTOR I ask myself the same questions when thinking about miracles. “No miracles are possible without our willingness to act.” There is a Midrash (B’midbar Rabbah 13:9) that says: “God’s power comes not from miracles produced from on High, but from acts of courage, justice, and compassion below”. We are God’s sh’lichim(representatives) on the plain of history. If we don’t act, miracles won’t happen! This is a very powerful way to bring holiness into our lives. It is up to us to empower our children to act.

The Talmud teaches us “You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to abandon it.” We have the power to change the course of the world. Small actions have transformative power. Every moment is an opportunity for a miracle – we just need to be more self-aware and move out of our comfort zone. We all have a mission in this world…our challenge is to find the meaning in the journey and keep looking for opportunities to partner with God in making miracles happen.

Valeria Michanie Religious School Director

I recently returned from a trip to Israel with 8 members of Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El. We are 9 members of the FEBRUARY 15TH – 18TH temple that accepted an invitation from the Jewish Women’s Renaissance Project (www.jwrp.org) to tour Israel for a week with over 150 other men to explore and learn about Israel, our spiritual wellbeing and our Jewish (PRESIDENT’S DAY WEEKEND) roots and religion. While we certainly weren’t as courageous or brave as the Maccabees, we were brave and courageous enough to take a week off work, leave our families and travel over 6,000 miles to embark on to this life- changing adventure. RAFI KATZ & BRIAN PEARLMAN So what makes us courageous and brave? All of us at some point were out CO-PRESIDENTS OF BROTHERHOOD of our comfort zone, whether it was taking a ritual bath in a male mikva in a spring-fed cave in Tsfat (Safed), hiking up Mount Masada, singing and dancing a hora at the Wailing Wall or debating a rabbinical student on the teachings of Maimonides. Most of all we connected with fellow Jews from across America and Canada.

Many members of our temple were presented with the unique opportunity to take this journey - all but 9 of us opted out. Each of us went to Israel for different reasons and with varied Jewish experiences and family histories, but through our experiences together in Israel we all came back better fathers, husbands and Jews.

So my modern day Jewish heroes are Dvir Weiss, Jeff Zatkowsky, Joey Princz, John Shiekman, Leo Dee, Rick Gendler, Robert Philipson and Baron Philipson. We left for Israel as Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El members and returned as HeBros! We all look forward to sharing our experiences with other temple members.

Sincerely, Brian Pearlman

WOMEN OF REFORM JUDAISM HINENI SHABBAT PHOTOS A GREAT EVIL PERSISTS... Special thanks to our amazing community for helping Superman and Wonder Woman where are you now? A great evil us honor our Holocaust Survivors at Hineni Shabbat persists in our society….Anti -Semitism. As a people, we have always had to be superheroes to constantly battle the evil forces of those who would try to destroy us, just because we are Jews. Many of the superhero characters in the comics, and in films, have been created by Jews.

The deadly attack on 11 Jews praying in their Synagogue on Shabbat again serves to remind us that as a community and as individuals, we need to stand strong against hatred and bigotry. Constantly maintaining our Jewish value of tikkun olam to promote tolerance and compassion throughout our immediate community and the world.

ELAINE FARKAS Several weeks ago, I attended the WRJ (Women of Reform Judaism) CO-PRESIDENT OF Southeast District Biennial in Miami. There were six women from our WRJ/SISTERHOOD Sisterhood representing Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El. For many of us this was a first time experience. Thank you to Davia Mazur, Kim Lerner, Ashley Weinger, Brittany Mohler, and Elise Lerner. The meetings and gatherings of women who were so involved in their Sisterhoods and the sharing of prayer, ideas and thoughts were very empowering and inspiring. The music lifted our Jewish souls and I do believe in our own way we felt like superheroes.

I personally feel that my involvement and commitment to our Congregation and Jewish values over the years, has helped me to feel like a superhero. By promoting our successful events as a Sisterhood of wonderful Women only makes me feel empowered to make a difference in our community of Jews.

Our Sisterhood has had successful fundraisers and programs in the last few . In December we are hosting a Chanukah event working with our youth groups. This program will serve to connect the children of our Temple family with those Jewish children of our greater community to have a fun celebration of Chanukah.

In January, we are getting a tour of the Mikvah at Contour Day Spa, enjoying lunch, and a Spa Experience. On January 24th, we are going to Sip & Sparkle for an evening of fun. Please join us.

Remember that we are all Superheroes in our own right and we can make a difference in our community and the world.
