Ahead of the 10th anniversary of the iOS App Store, App Annie has put together an interesting and detailed look at the first decade of app downloads. Follow along after the break for a look at the all-time most popular apps and games by downloads, revenue, and much more. The full App Annie report includes a wealth of data and comparisons from the last ten years. To start, the iOS App Store has over 2 million apps that have been downloaded over 170 billion times, and almost 10,000 of those apps have created $1 million or more in revenue. Let’s take a look at some of the most fascinating highlights. While some trends remain, there have been some big some shifts in what apps users are spending their time and money on during the last ten years. First up are the top 10 most popular apps from 2010 vs. 2018 (iOS games excluded). Eight years ago, by downloads, Talking Tom Cat topped the list, meanwhile today, Tik Tok – an extremely popular social media app in China – sits at number one just ahead of YouTube. As for the most popular apps by consumer spend, productivity, education, and navigation apps made up most of the top ten back in 2010 with Documents To Go being the most lucrative app. Now, entrainment and social apps like Netflix, Pandora Music, YouTube, and Tinder are what users are spending the most on. When it comes to games, there aren’t really any surprises. Both categories of all-time popularity by downloads and revenue are dominated by the household names of Candy Crush, Clash of Clans, Angry Birds, and more. While it came in at number four by download popularity, Clash of Clans cleaned up as the iOS game that has generating the most revenue of all- time. Interesting enough, Pokémon GO just squeezed in at number 10 for consumer spend. Also interesting, App Annie pegs iOS App Store revenue from games to make up for 75% of all App Store spending, despite them only accounting for 31% of app downloads. As for all-time iOS app downloads, Facebook, Google, and carried the top ten list. However, as for top ten all-time most popular apps by revenue, Netflix took came out on top followed by Spotify, Pandora, and Tencent . The US is still the market leader when it comes to all-time iOS downloads (40.1 billion) and revenue ($36 billion), but China will likely move into the top spot soon. Notably, the App Store has seen huge growth when it comes to consumer spending. App Annie puts the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) at 30% from 2012-2017. Another interesting data point is that there are almost 3,000 apps that have created $1 million in revenue in 2017 alone, with over 500 of them creating greater that $10 million in consumer spending. Those numbers are up from just 770 apps with $1M in revenue and 61 with over $10M in 2012. Pokemon Go Was Most Downloaded App in Apple's App Store in 2016. The mid-year hit from Niantic took the top spot in the list, but it wasn't the only Nintendo-related app to appear in the top 10 most downloaded apps. Super Mario Run was also among the top ten most downloaded apps worldwide for 2016. Super Mario Run has already been downloaded over 50 million times since its release in December and was the most downloaded app globally on both Christmas and New Year's Day, according to Apple. Here are the most downloaded apps and games on and Apple App Store in Q1 2019. App usage is greater than ever with users across the world spending more than $19.5 billion on the Apple App Store and Google Play in the first quarter of 2019 while the stores saw $16.7 billion in revenue in the first quarter of 2018. This and many more findings were published in the new report by Sensor Tower, a mobile app intelligence firm. According to the report, the revenue represents a 16.9% year-over-year increase. The accumulated profits were garnered through in-app purchases, subscriptions, and premium apps. Interestingly, the report claims that Apple’s App Store accounts for over 64% of the revenue generated by both the stores in the last quarter with the profits totaling $12.4 billion worldwide. Which means a 15% growth rate when compared to the last year’s first quarter where spending reached around $10.8 billion in the App Store. On the other hand, the revenue for Google Play grew 20.2% year-over-year. However, Google Play accounts for around 74% of the 28.1 billion first-time app installs in the first quarter of 2019 while App Store’s installs reach 7.4 billion – a 4.7 decline from the same time last year. The dating app Tinder beats Netflix – the video streaming service to rank on the top of the revenue spot for the previous quarter. When it comes to top mobile games, Sensor Tower noted that "8 of the top 10 grossing mobile games in Q1 were developed in Asia, led by Tencent’s MOBA , which was once again the world’s No. 1 earning mobile app across all categories. " While, Color Bump 3d and PUBG Mobile are the two most downloaded games across App Store and Google Play. Apple announces its ‘Best of 2018’ lists across apps, games, music, podcasts and more. Apple today announced its Best of 2018 selections – its annual, editorial list of what it considers the best content across its App Store and iTunes, along with its top charts of the most downloaded apps and games fo the year. As in other years, Apple selected a “best” app and game for each platform, including iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and Mac. It also rounded-up several favorite Apple Watch apps, but didn’t award a winner. The best app of 2018 on iPhone was the iPhone version of the popular Procreate drawing app for iPad, Procreate Pocket. Meanwhile, the top iPad app was Froggipedia, an AR app that lets you virtually dissect a frog so you don’t have to actually dissect a frog. Both apps showcase technologies Apple aims to promote. In Procreate Pocket’s case, it’s the iPhone companion to an Apple Pencil-powered app on iPad. On the iPhone, it instead uses 3D Touch support for painting with your finger. Froggipedia turns an Apple Pencil into the scalpel to dissect a virtual frog. On Mac, the top app was image editor Pixelmator Pro, and top Apple TV app was the big-screened version of workout app Sweat, whose creator Kayla Itsines also showed up at WWDC this year to lead a special session. The top games this year were: Donut County (iPhone), Gorogoa (iPad), The Gardens Between (Mac) and Alto’s Odyssey (Apple TV) – the latter which also won an Apple Design Award earlier this year. Showcasing their somewhat secondary status, Apple Watch apps didn’t get a “best of” pick for app and game, but a small group got a shoutout from Apple as being “favorites.” This includes: WaterMinder, Lifesum, 10% Happier, Carrot Weather, FunGolf GPS, Swing Tennis Tracker, Slopes, App in the Air, Overcast, and Just Press Record. In addition to its “Best of” apps, Apple also identified 2018 app trends, which included “self-care” apps in the non-gaming space, and Battle Royale-style gaming (e.g. Fortnite and PUBG Mobile) as the game trend. Notably, a self-care app – meditation app Calm – won the best iPhone app of 2017, so this is trend that’s not dying down. Though not a “Best of” pick on iPhone or iPad, Apple did give a shout-out to wellness and self-care apps, noting that Fabulous, Shine, 10% Happier and Headspace had a good year. While its “Best of” selections were editorially chosen, Apple also unveiled its year-end “Top Charts” across iPhone and iPad, which were separated by both apps and games (free and paid). These are the most downloaded app of 2018. The lists still show Facebook, YouTube, Google, and other entertainment apps dominating the top free charts. Top Free iPhone Apps – Chart.
