F. BACKGROUND

In 1913, Katrina Trask, philanthropist, co-founder of , and Saratoga Springs resident, along with , commissioned the Memorial to honor her late husband, Spencer Trask, and his efforts to protect and preserve Saratoga’s natural springs while further beautifying Congress Park. The work for the Memorial was completed through the artistic collaboration of two significant Americans, sculptor and architect Henry Bacon, as well as landscape architect Charles Leavitt. The Spencer Trask Memorial was a true partnership during the early career of these two friends, who also designed and executed the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Daniel Chester French created the bronze sculpture, The Spirit of Life, while Henry Bacon designed the architectural and landscaped surrounds. The Memorial was completed in 1915, the same year the City of Saratoga Springs was incorporated.

The Spencer Trask Memorial serves as a constant reminder of our civic responsibility to preserve our nationally and locally significant resources, to give back to the community, to have pride in creative partnerships, and find comfort in respite and beauty. The Spencer Trask Memorial inscription reads, “His one object in life was to do right and to serve his fellow men.” This simple, powerful, and enduring sentiment is directly aligned with philanthropic spirit of the Saratoga Springs community.

As The Saratoga Sun published in June, 1915, “The sun shining upon it gave added beauty and effectiveness and the statue will always be, besides being a memorial to Mr. Trask, one of the beauties of the parks, which will attract the eye of all who come to this city.” The same holds true for today’s visitors. The Spirit of Life has become a symbol of the city, as the winged figure returns the once-endangered waters from her bowl to the springs of Saratoga. Yet contemporary residents and tourists will not have the opportunity to enjoy the meaning of the sculpture, the beautiful surroundings, or appreciate its national significance if the Memorial is not fully restored to its former glory and maintained for years to come.

The Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation, in partnership with the City of Saratoga Springs, has been leading the charge in preserving and caring for the Memorial. In 2011, the Foundation kicked off a four-year campaign in which they will strive to raise approximately $750,000. The proceeds of this campaign will go towards the conservation and restoration of the Memorial as well as developing a plan for future maintenance.

G. ART SALES

Artists set all prices. The Trask Art Show is a fundraiser for The Spirit of Life & Spencer Trask Memorial. Therefore, artists are encouraged to price their work to sell. Artists are to provide an opening bid price and a retail sale price for each piece. The organizers will set the bidding increments at their discretion.

HELPFUL GUIDELINES:

 Opening Bid Price—The price at which the bidding will begin on your piece at the silent auction. The opening bid price should correspond to the lowest price you would accept for the work. Art entered in similar events has been offered at a wide range of prices. There is no low or high price limit, however artists should be aware that the average price of art sold has been approximately $50—$400. Works of art that have been most likely to sell have had opening bid prices under $200. Works priced higher than $900 have generally not sold well. Opening bid prices under $200 are suggested to increase the likelihood of sale.  Retail Sale Price—Should be higher than the opening bid price and the price at which the art would sell in a retail setting or gallery.  Closeout Price—If your artwork has not sold by a designated time, you may choose to offer a closeout price so that the sale of your work may benefit the Restoration fundraising campaign. This can be set at your discretion as the artist.  “Buy It Now” Price—Some artwork may be assigned a “Buy It Now” price, which will be a percentage ABOVE the retail sale price assigned by the artist.  Buyers will purchase works through the silent auction process and will be checked out at the event by the sales staff. Buyers will be allowed to take their purchased works at the end of the event. Artists will receive 50% of the proceeds of any sales of their works, unless the work has been fully donated. The artist gives the organizers the exclusive right to sell exhibited work for the duration of the event. Payments to artists will be mailed to the address provided on the entry form within 2-3 weeks of the day of the event.
