Their songs are drawn from the repertoires of famous European composers – Massenet, Mascagni, Puccini, Leonca- vallo, Bizet, Mozart and Wagner – as well as the Bryan Griffi n, tenor American favorite George Gershwin. This was a project inspired by an afternoon of looking at old photographs of Michigan City’s Wash- ington Park beach in its heyday, with people in the old fashioned bathing suits enjoying a day at the beach. The Murphy family and Neil Kienitz wanted to bring the “heyday” back. They wanted to bring the beach into Elston Grove Historic district but honor it with a historic theme. The idea of a mural came to mind. The concept was to highlight the proximity of these pristine beaches and dunes that were with- in walking distance from the historic district. The Murphy family went to resident artist, Neil Kien- itz, a world renowned painter and resident of Elston Grove and the project was born. Neil came up with a great concept that captured where we wanted to go, a family spending the day at the beach. The “canvas”, a 9 X 5 foot, concrete sign that bore the old Arts Center name, is outside of the origi- nal Michigan CIty Library, a Neoclassical building built in 1897 by Reed and Stern, the same fi rm who designed Grand Central Station in New York City. The original Michigan City Library operated in this building at 8th and Spring until 1977. Then it be- came the John C. Blank Center for the Arts until 2000. There were many signifi cant exhibitions over the years, including one of the last to take place at the center, a Frank Lloyd Wright exhibition of his works in Indiana. In talking with the LaPorte Tourism and Porter County Tourism bureaus, it was discovered they were in the early stages of marketing the name of “Indiana’s Ocean.” We loved that name because it depicts an oceanic experience that can be felt in the midwest where our great dunes meet our Great Lakes. We wanted to promote this concept. We re- ceived the full support of the bureaus to use the name. The mural captures the feeling of Indiana’s southern shore of Lake Michigan and the experi- ences of those who visit it, who enjoy it. Experience Indiana’s Ocean. Our goal too was that if you look at the mural, you know that it’s Indiana. You recognize the dunes. The completed mural is a collaborative effort to promote Indiana’s great natural resources, the dunes and the lake. ----submitted by the Murphy family

The Beacher staff would like to take this opportunity to say… Thanks to ALL the advertisers and to our faithful readers who support them.

Labor Day Labor Day is observed throughout the United States in recognition of the dignity of labor, falling on the first Monday in September each year. Labor organizations sponsor various celebrations, but for most is is a day of rest. It also has become a symbol of the end of summer. Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners, May 18, 1882, at a central Labor Union meeting in New York City, proposed that “a day be set aside as a festive day, during which parade through the streets of the city would permit public tribute to American industry.” The motion was adopted and plans for the first Labor Day celebration made. On Sept. 5th of that year, workers staged the first Labor Day parade in New York City. October 7, 1884, American Federation of Labor meeting at Chicago, A.C. Cameron, member of the Typographical Union 16 introduced the following resolution: “Resolved, That the first Monday in September each year be set aside as a laborers’ national holiday, and that we rec- ommend its observance by all wage workers, irrespective of sex, calling or nationality.” In 1887, Oregon became the first state to make Labor Day a legal holiday, followed the same year by Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York. By 1890 Connecticut, Nebraska and Pennsylvania had followed suit. In 1894 President Grover Cleveland signed a bill making Labor Day an official legal holiday for the whole country. World Wide Celebrations Labor Day is also observed as a legal holiday on the first Monday in September in Puerto Rico and Canada. In Australia, Labor Day is called Eight Hour Day, and commemorates the successful struggle for a shorter working day. The Australian holiday varies from state to state. In Europe, Labor Day is May 1.
