STRENGTHENING CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANIZATIONS

In a dynamic democracy like Indonesia, the three cornerstones of democratic society – government, the private sector, and civil society – should be equally strong and vibrant. The United States and Indonesia partner to safeguard democracy by building capacity among civil society organizations and supporting their sustainability.

Since 1998, Indonesia has made remarkable progress to promote democratic systems and has improved the delivery of public services and civic participation. The United States and Indonesia are committed to supporting a strong and vibrant civil society in order to safeguard democracy. CSOs are valuable representatives of citizen interests, particularly at the local level, but many need improved organizational management, technical expertise, accountability, and sustainable financing and financial management.

USAID MADANI

USAID’s MADANI Civil Society Support Initiative strengthens government accountability and promotes community tolerance at the local level in Indonesia. USAID MADANI empowers local CSOs by improving organizational capacity, expanding reach and relevance, and building up sustainable means of

USAID MADANI facilitates better collaboration between local governments, CSOs, and other partners by promoting the benefit of collaboration and building the relationships, networks, and systems that make collaboration possible. USAID MADANI works in 32 districts in the provinces of East Java, Central Java, West Java, Banten, South Sulawesi, and West Kalimantan.

RESULTS OR ANTICIPATED RESULTS

• Grants issued to 45 CSOs to support the development of a more vibrant, reputable, and self-reliant civil society at the sub-national level; • Improved capacity of CSOs in 32 districts, which have adopted standard operating procedures on financial management, human resources management, and procurement and strategic planning; • Established 32 multi-stakeholder learning forums that provide input into local policy drafts and organize community discussions on topics of mutual concern for parliament members, local government officials, frontline workers, and community activists. • Strengthened local government and civil society cooperation through workshops, public hearings, and greater funding and access to information for local CSOs’ use and capacity- building activities. • Improved community messaging on COVID-19 by establishing a microsite with reliable information that has been accessed by 9,700 new users to date.
