11.30 – Next I usually check my emails on my laptop in the Atrium and look at what practical sessions are coming up for the week. Need to make sure I keep on top of all correspondence from my tutors

16.00 – Meet with my personal tutor to talk about how I’m getting on and discuss placement opportunities for next year

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF AN ACADEMIC

I’m a senior lecturer who teaches Biochemistry (mainly at 3rd year level). I have 15 year 1 tutees, 14 year 2 tutees and 8 year 3 tutees. I am also principal investigator of a group looking at cardiovascular disease and diabetes (3 PhD students) and the Director of Postgraduate Research in the School of Life Sciences where I am in charge of the PhD students in the School in terms of monitoring and progression and completion (over 100 of them).

8.00 – Turn on computer and make a cup of tea while it fires into life

8.05-8.30 – Open emails, deal with them including responding to a request to do a PhD transfer viva and answer queries from PhD supervisors about School processes

8.30-11.00 – Collect up lecture notes and pick up the Quizdom (‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire’ style keypads) for a 2-hour final-year lecture 14.00-15.00 – Year 3 personal tutorial with 8 session starting at 9am and get to the room students – discuss how their research project to set up the technology.
