Bronze Age Pottery from Suffolk- an Additional Note BRONZE AGE POTTERY FROM SUFFOLK- AN ADDITIONAL NOTE By NORMANSMEDLEY,M.A.,F.S.A., F.M.A.andELIZABETHOWLES,LA. Examination of the collections in the Ipswich Museum has revealed a small number of sherds which were not included in our previous paper.' They are now described and figured in order to render the record more complete. All the specimens came from the site, now occupied by a housing estate, of the Dales Road Brickfield (TM/155463 approx.). EARLY BRONZE AGE 1650 B.C.-c. 1400 B.C. Fragments of a food-vessel (Fig. 77, a), including one good rim-sherd, were recovered in 1937 from the Dales Road Brickfield, north side. The vessel (I.M. 1937-191.B.1.) is in coarse brownish-buff ware, with flattened (slightly concave) rim, and a diameter of 6 inches. The angle of the wall would seem to indicate a probable height of 44 inches and a base of 21. inches, approximately com- parable with the food-vessel from Warren Hill, Mildenhal1,2 in the Moyse's Hall Museum at Bury St. Edmunds. Horizontal raised cordons at one inch and 2 inches below the rim, and the outer edge of the rim itself, are decorated with vertical or slightly oblique cuts made with a flat blade rather than with the finger-nail. Between the rim and the first cordon appears a circular indentation, 3/16 of an inch in depth. This is probably one of a series of such decorations, but as no more are present the spacing cannot be estimated. A small rim-sherd and another portion from a similar vessel (I.M. 1937-191.B.4), but in too fragmentary a state for determina- tion of the decoration, also came from this site. A rim of another food-vessel (I.M. 1937-191.B.5) (Fig. 77, b) was found near the same spot. This vessel was 7 inches in diameter, with a height calculated as approximately 31 inches, base 31 inches. The rim is somewhat flattened and slightly incurved. A flat cordon lies from finch to one inch below the rim and is de- 1 'Pottery of the Early and Early Middle Bronze Age in Suffolk', Proc. Suff. The body is decorated with alternating rows of obliquely vertical finger-nail indentations. 4. Another sherd with similar decoration, but probably from another vessel, was also found. There is not sufficient evidence to show whether either of these food-vessels was associated with either a cremation or an inhuma- tion. el.1, e:na e, er. e • (( / ft / t , a Fm. 77.—Additionalsherdsfrom Dales Road Brickfield. EARLY MIDDLE BRONZE AGE c. 1400B.C.-900/850 B.C. From the same site comes a rim-sherd of an accessory cup (Fig. 77, c), in very coa rse greyish-buff ware, with simple rim. (I.M. 1937-191.B.3). A very small fragment of a vessel with more rounded rim is also present. (I.M. 1937 - 191.B.2). All the above specimens were collected and presented to the Ipswich Museum by the late J. Reid Moir, F.R.S. The Dales Road Brickfield has proved a prolific site with a wide range of occupation. Even so it is somewhat surprising to find the present assemblage in such close association. It is unfortunate that no record exists of the stratification. The map previously published 3 gives the impression that food- vessels were confined to the west of the county. From this new evidence it would appear that the range may be extended into East Suffolk. 3 loc. cit., p. 176. • The Mattin Family of Campsea Ashe
The Mattin Family of Campsea Ashe Research by Sheila Holmes July 2014 © Sheila Holmes Mattin Family The Mattin families lived in Campsea Ashe from at least 1803 until the early part of the 20th century. Thomas Mattin and his wife Elizabeth nee Curtis, lived in the neighbouring village of Hacheston. Their son Thomas, married a girl from Campsea Ashe, where they settled for the rest of their married lives. They brought up their children and some of whom continued to live in the village. The Mattin family, were connected to several other Campsea Ashe families through marriage, such as the Youngmans , Mays, Lings, Curtis’s, Townrows and Knights. It is possible that one branch of the family lived in Little Glemham but so far no definite connection has been found, In 1881, there were there were 6 Mattin families living in the village at same time. Connection with the Youngman family. John Youngman, born 15th December 1791 and died on 15th March 1874, Campsea Ashe, married Elizabeth Ling on 25th May 1813. Their daughter, Charlotte, born 1817, married Charles Mattin,. Charles and Charlotte had a son, Charles, born 1839. Young Charles Mattin lived with his grand parents, John and Elizabeth Youngman from the age of 2 in Campsea Ashe. Charged with Actual Bodily Harm. An entry in the records of the Quarter Sessions at Ipswich on 1st July 1870 states, Charles Mattin and James Mattin, the younger, were charged with causing actual bodily harm, were sentenced to 12 calendar months imprisonment with hard labour. It is not known who these two men were or indeed whether they were members of our Mattin family.
