Suman BISHOP MUSEUM, HONOLULU, HAWAII Abstract: This paper contains a systematic list of species, and the literature references, of the spiders occurring in the Hawaiian Islands. The species total 149 of which 17 are record ed here for the first time. This paper lists the records and literature of the spiders in the Hawaiian Islands. The islands included are Kure, Midway, Laysan, French Frigate Shoal, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui and Hawaii. The only major work dealing with the spiders in the Hawaiian Is. was published 60 years ago in " Fauna Hawaiiensis " by Simon (1900 & 1904). All of the endemic spiders known today, except Pseudanapis aloha Forster, are described in that work which also in cludes a listing of several introduced species. The spider collection available to Simon re presented only a small part of the entire Hawaiian fauna. In all probability, the endemic species are only partly known. Since the appearance of Simon's work, there have been many new records and lists of introduced spiders. The known Hawaiian spider fauna now totals 149 species and 4 subspecies belonging to 21 families and 66 genera. Of this total, 82 species (5596) are believed to be endemic and belong to 10 families and 27 genera including 7 endemic genera. The introduced spe cies total 65 (44^). Two unidentified species placed in indigenous genera comprise the remaining \%. Seventeen species are recorded here for the first time. In the catalog section of this paper, families, genera and species are listed alphabetical ly for convenience. -

The pholcid spiders Modisimus culicinus (Simon, 1893) and Micropholcus fauroti (Simon, 1887) are pantropical species that have spread around the world at least several decades ago. Here we present numerous new records for both species, most of which fall into the expected latitudes, i.e. between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn (93 % and 87 % of records respectively). However, we also report the first records for M. culicinus from Central Europe (Germany and Czech Republic, >50°N) and the first European record for M. fauroti from outside of Belgium (Germany). The fact that in both species several specimens have been found at more than one locality suggests that they may already be in the stage of establishment and spreading in Europe. Finally, we present an updated identification key to the genera of Pholcidae in Europe. Key words: alien, harmless, invasive, pantropical, synanthropic Zusammenfassung. HUBER Alexander Koenig Research Museum of Zoology, Adenauerallee 160, 53113 Bonn, Germany [email protected] The diversity of Neotropical pholcids is extraordinary, but our knowledge about this diversity is still fragmentary (Huber 2000). This is especially true at the level of species, where many dozens, more probably hundreds, of species remain undescribed. Evidence for this high number comes from regional surveys that yielded dozens of species within relatively limited geographic areas (e.g. Silva 1996; Florez 1996), and from the low degree of species overlap between localities (e.g. in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, B. A. Huber, unpublished data). Venezuela may well be among the nations with the highest diversity, and the recent increase in genus and species numbers partly reflects this situation. However, most of South American pholcid diversity is restricted to pristine forests. Primary forests often house a dozen species within a five minutes walk; degraded secondary forests usually contain no more than one to four species; plantations, pastures and similar unnatural habitats are mostly entirely devoid of pholcid spiders. Several pholcids, how- ever, have successfully followed humans around the globe, and some of them are regular inhabitants of houses and other man-made structures in the New World tropics. The most successful of these is probably Physocyclus globosus (Tac- zanowski, 1874), followed by Micropholcus fauroti (Simon, 1887), Modisimus culicinus (Simon, 1893), Crossopriza lyoni (Blackwall, 1867), Artema atlanta Walckenaer, 1837, and Smeringopus pallidus (Blackwall, 1858). -

Zoology and Nematology Dept., Faculty of Agric., Al-Azhar University, Assiut, Egypt Abstract Biological aspects of the spider species, Artema Atlanta Walckenaer, 1837 was studied at constant conditions in laboratory (25±2°C and 60-70% R.H.) when fed on four prey. Larva of the vinegar fly, Dorsophila melanogaster and the fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata.were introduced to the first and second spiderlings, stored grain worm moth, Ephestia kuehniella and the vinegar fly, Dorsophila melanogaster introduced to the third and fourth spiderlings and house flies, Musca domestica, stored grain worm moth, Ephestia kuehniella and the vinegar fly, Dorsophila melanogaster introduced to the fifth and sixth spiderlings. Incubation period averaged 11.5 ± 1.20 days. The pre- oviposition period was 19.81 days before laying eggs, while the oviposition period averaged 32.8 ± 3.77days; the post- oviposition period averaged 134.9 ± 3.72 days. A Few Common Spiders At
A few of the Common Spiders at BLP The following spider notes are specific to BLP, but may also be useful throughout coastal California. The best beginning book on spiders is Spiders and their kin by a Harvard professor and his wife, Herbert and Lorna Levi. The book is in the library and is available at the bookstore. The notes below often refer to that book by page number. These notes were slightly rewritten by Greg de Nevers from an earlier version by Mary Anne Saddler and Ann Christensen. They were further slightly modified by David Herlocker and subsequently modified by Gwen Heistand. GENERALITIES. Male spiders are generally smaller than females, and often more cryptic. Females have bigger abdomens (full of eggs). Mature males have a pair of enlarged palps that look like boxing gloves in front of their face, females never do. Virtually every web you see has a spider on or near it. Look for them! They often hide where a radial strut attaches to a plant near the top of the web. There are no records (specimens) of brown recluse spiders from the Bay Area. ORB WEAVERS. Orb weavers (a family – Araneidae – with many genera) are the classic spiders, like Charlotte, making a wagon-wheel shaped web. They are the most numerous and diverse group of spiders. With a life span of one year or less, they emerge from their egg sacs in spring as tiny spiderlings. They balloon away from their birthplace, grow through the summer, and lay eggs in the fall. Orb weavers are the only spiders known to write in English.
