Among the signers was Charles Carroll, who has the distinction of American being the only Catholic signer of the Declaration. Catholic History “The only son of Maryland’s richest planter and cousin to the future Archbishop ♦ July 4 ♦ John Carroll”Nthe first Catholic bishop (and later archbishop) in the United States , “Charles Carroll was one of the wealthiest men in America at the time. But that didn’t stop him from signing the Declaration after the Congress passed it on July 4, 1776.” Even though he had spent sixteen years studying in France and London, he started arguing for independence after returning to Maryland in 1765, advocating for American selfgovernance and against British taxation practices and policies. In the pages of the Maryland Gazette (under the pseudonym “First Citizen”) and on various committees of correspondence, he championed American selfgovernance and railed against British taxation policies. In 1776, Carroll was chosen to serve as one of Maryland’s delegates to the Continental Congress meeting in Philadelphia. While not present to vote on the Declaration, he signed it gladly and proudlyNthe only Catholic to do so. Charles Carroll died on November 14, 1832, the last surviving signer of the of the Declaration of Independence. At her birth in 1271, her father Pedro III, future king of Aragon in Spain, was Saint of the Day reconciled with his father James, the reigning monarch. This proved to be a ———————- Saint Elizabeth portent of things to come. Under the healthful influences surrounding her early years, she quickly learned selfdiscipline and acquired a taste for of Portugal spirituality. Thus fortunately prepared, Elizabeth was able to meet the challenge when at the age of 12, she was given in marriage to Denis, king of Portugal. She was able to establish for herself a pattern of life conducive to growth in God’s love, not merely through her exercises of piety, including daily Mass, but also through her exercise of charity, by which she was able to befriend and help pilgrims, strangers, the sick, the poorNin a word, all those whose need came to her notice. At the same time she remained devoted to her husband, whose infidelity to her was a scandal to the kingdom. Denis, too, was the object of many of her peace endeavors. Elizabeth long sought peace for him with God, and was finally rewarded when he gave up his life of sin. She repeatedly sought and effected peace between the king and their rebellious son Alfonso, who thought that he was passed over to favor the king’s illegitimate children. She acted as peacemaker in the struggle between Ferdinand, king of Aragon, and his cousin James, who claimed the crown. And finally from Coimbra, where she had retired as a Franciscan tertiary to the monastery of the Poor Clares after the death of her husband. Elizabeth set out and was able to bring about a lasting peace between her son Alfonso, now king of Portugal, and his soninlaw, the king of Castile in Spain.” Source: https://www.franciscanmedia.org/saintoftheday/saintelizabethofportugal The Saint Catherine Road Race committee would like to thank Allyn and Kim (The Barn at Maple Lane) and Jill and Del (Amos Lake Beach Club) for their unique support of the 2021 road race. July & August MondayNThursday 9:00 amN1:00 pm Closed Friday NEWS FROM ST. CATHERINE LADY’S GUILD Our Lady of Good Council Guild is looking for new members willing to bring new ideas and energy to our organization. Becoming a member does not require a huge time commitment. We have three meetings a year, all coupled with a guild dinner. The lady’s guild usually has two to three fundraisers a year with the proceeds being distributed to a variety of charitable organizations as well as helping those in need in our St. Catherine and Preston communities. There will be a potluck meeting in September in Siena Hall. Please watch the bulletin for further information. We hope to see you there! Also, the Lady’s Guild recently dedicated an angel statue in memory of long-time parishioner and lady’s guild member Nancy Mignault. The statue is in the prayer garden on the grounds of St. Catherine, and we encourage parishioners to visit the prayer garden. The guild would like to thank Joe Cubanski who donated his time, talent, and materials to create the base for the statue. Latest COVID19 UpdateNJune 29, 2021 In keeping with State and CDC guidelines, people who are fully vaccinated are not required to wear masks while people who are not fully vaccinated are required to continue wearing masks. If you are fully vaccinated and want to wear a mask, please feel free to do so. In making a maskwearing decision, please be mindful and respectful of people who must wear a mask due to compromised health and/or age conditions, especially when those conditions prevent them from being vaccinated. Several pews will continue to be roped off for social distancing purposes for parishioners who want to sit in a more “sociallydistanced enforced” area. Keeping a social distance is still encouraged out of respect for people with compromised health conditions. Reservations are no longer required.
