More than 4,000 area residents are expected to gather on the steps of the Mississippi State Capitol on September 30, to raise funds to fight heart disease and stroke, America’s No. 1 and No. 4 killers. The annual Metro Jackson Heart Walk activities begin at 1 p.m. with the walk starting at 2:00 p.m.

The non-competitive, three-mile walk and 1 mile survivor route is free to the public and includes teams of employees from local companies, along with friends and family members of all ages.

“For every hour of brisk walking, life expectancy may increase for some adults by as much as two hours,” said Claude W. Harbarger, President and CEO of St. Dominic Health Services. “That’s a ‘healthy’ return on investment, and one that we hope will inspire participants to take up walking regularly us- ing American Heart Association Walking Paths and Walking Clubs.”

The Metro Jackson Heart Walk will have a special “Kid’s Zone” area for children to enjoy. There will also be giveaways from local companies and local entertainment for the entire family. This will be an afternoon of fun and wellness. Subway, the National My Heart My Life Sponsor, will also have food for all the participants following the Heart Walk.

The annual success of the Metro Jackson Heart Walk is due in part to the local My Heart My Life Plat- form Sponsor, St. Dominic’s. Other local sponsors include the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Saks, Inc., United Healthcare, UPS, Baptist Health Systems, FOX 40 News, Clear Channel Radio, Lamar Outdoor advertising, VIP Jackson magazine and more.

For information on participating in the Heart Walk, call the American Heart Association at 601.321.1209 or visit www.metrojacksonheartwalk.org to register.
