  • Mares Is in the Right Spot to Be the Next Little Guy with a Big Impact
Mares is in the right spot to be the next little guy with a big impact The argument is that only a great American heavyweight can resurrect boxing in the United States. Good luck on that search. At the opposite end of the scale, however, there’s no debate. There’s reality. Given the Mexican and Mexican-American demographic at the heart of the game’s audience, the little guy is imperative. Abner Mares might be that guy, the latest in a line of little big men from 105 to 126 pounds who have helped sustain the business since Michael Carbajal and Humberto Gonzalez transformed it. Mares carries a sense of poise, smarts and skill with him when he steps through the ropes. There’s also accountability. There was never any hesitation in his decision to fight a rematch with Joseph Agbeko after a controversial victory marred by low blows. The pragmatist might have moved on. But that would have left a mess. Mares cleaned up the questions with a victory, a unanimous decision, in a December rematch that allowed him to take the next step, from bantamweight to super-bantam, against Eric Morel Saturday night in El Paso, Tex. Mares is trying on a heavier weight with the hope of generating momentum for a date with Nonito Donaire. In a conference call, Mares talked about five super-bantamweights he’d like to fight. “Victor Terrazas, Fernando Montiel, Rafael Marquez, Wilfredo Vazquez Jr., Jorge Arce, and the big name that is up there is, no doubt, Nonito Donaire,’’ Mares said.

  • Lawyers' Litigation Forecasts Play an Integral Role in the Justice System
Journalism and Mass Communication, Jan.-Feb. 2019, Vol. 9, No. 1, 1-12 doi: 10.17265/2160-6579/2019.01.001 D DAVID PUBLISHING Drug Trafficking and Propaganda: The Image of Drug Trafficking in the Mexican Press 2006-2010 Jacob Bañuelos Capistrán, Fernando Montiel T. Tecnológico de Monterrey, Monterrey, Mexico The aim of this study is to identify and analyze the pattern of visibility of the main actors in the photographic coverage of drug trafficking in six of Mexico’s national newspapers. The study was based on a sample of 12,962,000 photographs published from 2006 to 2010. The images were processed by generating a codebook of key categories extracted from the informational context of drug trafficking and the war against drug trafficking. The technique used to explain the newspapers’ photographic coverage was the content analysis proposed by Johan Galtung in 1965, in its updated version of 2006. The limitations of the research are time constraints (only four years of President Felipe Calderón’s six-year term were analyzed) and information platforms (with the omission of online newspapers, supplements, and additional publications). The study offers an original analysis of the photographic coverage of drug trafficking in the Mexican press. The use of the Galtung Model reveals strong biases and imbalances in the coverage, with a clear tendency to defend the government’s position in the analyzed sample. Keywords: drug trafficking, photojournalism, war, actors, Mexico Introduction From December, 2006 to January, 2017, tens of thousands of individuals lost their life in Mexico in the framework of the social crisis known generally as the “war against drug trafficking”.

  • Montiel's Promises for a New Style Might Be the Wake-Up Call Needed
Montiel’s promises for a new style might be the wake-up call needed to kick-start 2011 There’s a new wrinkle to a line that has echoed throughout boxing for as long as gyms have been full of the familiar rhythms from a speed bag. Yeah, styles make fights. That one fits like an old glove. But styles do more than that. They create audiences, which these days are more interested in fighters willing to risk a record instead of protecting one. Fernando Montiel has figured that out. At least, it sounds as if he has. He returns to the United States for the first time in a year and to HBO for the first time since 2006 on Feb. 19 in an intriguing a bantamweight clash against Nonito Donaire at Las Vegas Mandalay Bay. About five years ago, Montiel was told he would never appear on HBO again. A split-decision loss to Jhonny Gonzalez was one thing. Another was a performance that included no compelling reason for anybody to think they’d like to see him an encore. “That fight against Gonzalez, I think, was a question of styles,’’ Montiel said during a conference call Tuesday. “We just couldn’t get together. His style and my style could never match that night. It was a difficult fight for both of us and we each wanted to show something and it wasn’t possible. “After the fight, I heard the criticism and thought I needed to do something about it. I did. I changed my style, became more aggressive.
