"Lest They Perish": The Armenian Genocide and the Making of Modern Humanitarian Media in the U.S., 1915-1925 Abstract Between celebrity spokesmen and late night informercials, international humanitarian aid organizations use multiple media strategies to generate public interest in their programs. Though this humanitarian media has seemingly proliferated in the past thirty years, these publicity campaigns are no recent phenomenon but one that emerged from the World War I era. "Lest They Perish" is a case study of the modernization of international humanitarian media in the U.S. during and after the Armenian genocide from 1915 to 1925. This study concerns the Near East Relief, an international humanitarian organization that raised and contributed over $100,000,000 in aid to the Armenians during these years of violence. As war raged throughout Europe and Western Asia, American governmental propagandists kept the public invested in the action overseas. Private philanthropies were using similar techniques aimed at enveloping prospective donors in "whirlwind campaigns" to raise funds. -

Internet Adoption and Integration by Network Television News (1997 to 2004) ABSTRACT The focus of this study is broadcast network news and how the “big three” television networks (ABC, CBS, NBC) responded to the Internet over an eight-year period of time, 1997 to 2004. The study measures the networks’ coverage of the Internet as a news subject and their incorporation of companion news websites into their respective nightly newscasts. Four Internet-related variables: a) news stories per newscast containing an Internet reference; b) Internet keywords; c) invitational references; and d) URL references were identified and utilized to examine whether changes exist in network coverage: a) over time; and b) relative to changes in the U.S. online population. This study found that historical time was not a significant factor in predicting the inclusion of Internet-related news stories and website references in nightly newscasts. -

Caring Stars and the Making of Global Citizens a DISSERTATION
Idols of Goodwill: Caring Stars and the Making of Global Citizens A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA BY Julie Wilson IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Adviser: Dr. Laurie Ouellette November 2011 copyright Julie Wilson 2011 Acknowledgments Laurie Ouellette taught me how to think. Really think. As an adviser, mentor, writing partner, and scholar, she taught me how to dwell in between theory, texts, institutions, history, and existing critical frameworks. Without her clarity of mind, this project would not have been conceptualized, much less realized. Throughout the writing process, Laurie balanced unyielding belief in me and this project with gentle yet persistent challenge to many of its most basic parameters. If I have made a meaningful contribution, it is because of her. I would have not found my way to this point without the guidance, both professional and intellectual, of Ron Greene. At a crucial moment in my graduate career, Ron stepped in and helped me to find and make a home in Communication Studies, while showing me that the best critical and theoretical work can indeed happen within a discipline. Ron also reintroduced me to Foucault in a way that profoundly impacted this project. For all this, I will long be in his debt. Gil Rodman, so generous throughout my time at Minnesota, has been and will always be a whisper in my ear, reminding me that the best cultural studies can do is to provide deep and profound knowledge of contexts. I cannot express (though I hope it shows) how much my work has been shaped by this precept. -

Disaster Communication: Lessons from the Asian Tsunami Tragedy
Disaster Communication: Lessons from the Asian Tsunami Tragedy An Initiative Commissioned by the Global Alliance Introduction It is with a sense of inadequacy that we present this report. It feels like a slight contribution to help ameliorate or possibly prevent the destruction and suffering caused by massive natural disasters such as the tsunami of December 26, 2004. I was approached in early January 2005 by GA first elected Chair Toni Muzi Falconi and current Chair Jean Valin with the message that there was a groundswell of pressure within the international PR community eager to help. The need was felt for recommendations as to how the profession should respond to the tsunami and large scale disasters in the future. I was asked to lead an effort to meet this need and I agreed to undertake the project. I shared the urge with millions of human beings around the world to do something, anything almost, if it would help those who had lost children, parents, relatives, friends, homes, and their livings – but retained the will to live and rebuild their lives. However, on a moment’s reflection I knew that any undertaking for the profession - beyond a personal contribution of time or money - would need to have clear guidelines and some conditions. The first thing was to determine if there is a relevant role for the GA to undertake in a disaster of this magnitude. If the answer is yes, then what kind of role? What can it do over and above what is being done already? We must avoid the danger of stepping in with too little understanding, too few resources and nothing of practical value to contribute to help those immediately affected and those giving aid. -

The Committee, starring Paul Jones (seen below in his wedding photo) of Manfred Mann fame, is a unique and controversial document of Britain in the 1960s. Avoiding easy answers, The Committee uses a surreal murder to explore the tension and conflict between bureaucracy on one side, and individual freedom on the other. Unlike many films of the era that vilified the state as repressive, The Committee also explores the inherent weakness of the individual. -
