Most often cut in black or white paper, it frequently includes symmetry as a primary design element, and can encompass everything from delicate silhouettes and love letters to complex landscapes and scenes from everyday life. In this class, students will design and cut their own patterns in folded paper, producing several works of art while being inspired by historical and contemporary examples of this humble yet extraordinary folk art form. All Levels 3010 | Basic Enameling Gary Schott If you’ve been timid about taking a metals class, but love working with imagery, color, layers, and graphics, then this may be the course for you. Enameling is the art of fusing glass onto metal surfaces to create colorful and creative designs. Students will begin with the basics of getting a well-prepped metal surface ready, proper sifting of enamel powders, and then firing a good base coat of enamel (both torch and kiln techniques will be demonstrated.) Design and surface techniques will include wet and dry stenciling, sgraffito, wet-packing, drawing with underglaze pencils and firing commercial decals. Without a thorough understanding of the philosophies and culture of this ancient landscape tradition, it is hard to create satisfying gardens inspired by Japan. This lecture/discussion-based class offers a complete survey of Japanese landscape history and thought. Ways to adapt Japanese concepts to Texas materials, plants and climate will be a key part of the class.
