TV and Broadway Star Richard Thomas Joins Pittsburgh CLO as Ebenezer Scrooge in A MUSICAL CHRISTMAS CAROL!

Pittsburgh, PA • November 1, 2018 – This December, Pittsburgh CLO brings one of the nation's top actors, Richard Thomas, to town in the iconic role of Ebenezer Scrooge in its 27th annual production of A MUSICAL CHRISTMAS CAROL, December 7-23 at the Byham Theater.

Perhaps best known for his appearances on television, including his Emmy-winning work as John-Boy on TV's and most recently as Agent Frank Gaad in , is Richard Thomas's accomplished career on Broadway that made him the perfect choice to be Pittsburgh CLO's next Scrooge. Richard's stage resume includes a string of hit new plays and revivals including The Fifth of July, and his 2017 Tony-nominated performance in .

"A MUSICAL CHRISTMAS CAROL is one of Pittsburgh CLO's favorite annual traditions," says Pittsburgh CLO Executive Producer and CEO, Van Kaplan, "and casting the perfect actor to play Scrooge is a key element of what makes the show so special year after year. I am so pleased that Richard is joining us in Pittsburgh to be a part of this special production and to entertain local audiences as the miserly Mr. Scrooge who finds love, hope and redemption in the end."

Each December, Pittsburgh CLO's student matinees of A MUSICAL CHRISTMAS CAROL introduce over 7,000 young people to the magic of live theater, many for the first time. Families, co-workers and groups of friends from all across the region make this beloved holiday tradition an annual outing to experience the magic of this seasonal favorite. Thanks to the overwhelming support received from the Next Generation Capital Campaign, the production has stunning new costumes, state-of-the- set elements and exciting special effects. The success of the Campaign ensures Pittsburgh CLO’s legacy as a cultural leader inspiring the next generation of theater audiences and artists. Richard Thomas (Ebenezer Scrooge) received a Tony Award nomination for his most recent appearance on Broadway in The Little Foxes. His other Broadway appearances include You Can’t Take It With You, An Enemy Of The People, Race, Democracy, , The Fifth Of July and his professional debut at 8 years old in Sunrise At Campobello. Recent performances include the Old Globe production of Othello, the Arena Stage premiere of Camp David, and the off-Broadway revival of Incident At Vichy for which he received a Drama Desk Award nomination. Richard was last seen on tour in the hit revival of 12 Angry Men and in the Tony Award winning play The Humans. On television, he created the roles of John-Boy on The Waltons for which he won the Emmy Award and recently Agent Frank Gaad on The Americans. He will next been seen on television in the TNT series Tell Me Your Secrets.

Since 1946, Pittsburgh CLO has been the driving force behind live musical theater in Pittsburgh and the entire Southwestern Pennsylvania region. Under the direction of Van Kaplan since 1997, this not-for-profit arts organization appreciates the support of nearly 200,000 patrons yearly who attend its performances at three venues in the Cultural District: a seasonal subscription series at the Benedum Center, A Musical Christmas Carol at the Byham Theater and year- round shows at the CLO Cabaret.
