Our Board President RW G. Stephen Getman has turned his column in this issue over to RW Keith Heinrich to talk about MW Richard P. Thomas, who put down his working tools and entered the Celestial Lodge above in March. Prior to his term on the Board of Trustees, Keith worked directly with Richard and the Board of Trustees as a member of the Administrative staff at the Masonic Care Community for thirty-two years, serving as Associate Executive Director from 1986 until 2009.

n late March, we lost a man who helped change the face of the Masonic Care Community: Most Worshipful Richard IThomas. Thomas led the campus through a renaissance that helped redefine our mission and changed our name from Masonic Home to the Masonic Care Community to better reflect our facility. MW Richard Thomas served as the Grand Master of the New York State Masons in 1990 to 1992. Shortly thereafter, he took a seat on the Board of Trustees of the Masonic Hall and Home, eventually becoming its President. When he first joined the Board, Thomas was convinced that the campus should be downsized, only serving Masons with 100 beds in the skilled nursing facility. But his knowledge of healthcare and specifically the role of the Masonic Care Community grew and MW Richard Thomas he realized that running a facility that welcomed all people, not just Brother Masons was a way to expand the public’s view of our Fraternity. He also looked on MCC as the first jewel in the our residents to enjoy. Now that my mother is a resident of Acacia Village, I would like to express my gratitude for the assistance you and your staff have provided for a smooth transition with her move from Queens, NY to Acacia Village. At 88 years young she made this move which proved to be physically and emotionally draining. Your help made things much easier and I thank you. As family visits and partakes in events held at Acacia Village we appreciate more so the benefits provided. I see you everywhere doing everything. The sense of community and the bond of the residents resemble that of fellowship I’ve experienced from my Masonic family and travels to date. The anxiety I’ve experienced in recent years concerning my mother’s well being is quelled knowing she has everything needed for a purposeful life and the embrace of everyone in the community. As a Mason, I am so proud of what is available and what many of my Brothers don’t see. I would be honored to volunteer and assist you any way I can. I know that you would enlist me to help you in this regard if needed anyway. That’s why I wanted to volunteer first. I also plan to be a regular visitor and look forward to seeing you. Again, I would like to thank you and everyone at Acacia Village. Every single contact made has been a blessing. Have a safe and happy holiday season. Sincerely,

40 THE EMPIRE STATE MASON MAGAZINE Share the Experience SUMMER 2019 DeMolay turns 100

arch 2019 marked the 100th Anniversary of the Order of MDeMolay. To recognize this milestone Grand Lodge dedicated a window in the lobby of the Masonic Hall at 71 West 23rd Street to DeMolay. Our Robert R Livingston Masonic Library displayed some items in their collection, with the majority coming from the collection of MW William M. Sardone.

The Grand Line commemorated the day, for NY DeMolay, with a ribbon cutting and presentation of a proclamation.

The window attracted a lot of attention.

International Master Councilor Avery Brinkley, visiting from California, and other DeMolays and New York Deputy State Master Councilor Austin Altman joined the Grand Line for a brief ceremony in the lobby. The presentation in the Hollander Room followed. The day was recognized worldwide as our Grand Lodge recognized it in New York.
