Anyone who has ever sat in a math class has probably wondered the same thing. What is pi? Not the kind of pie that we eat, but the kind of pi that gives mathematicians an appetite. Put simply, p i i s a n i r r a t i o n a l number, which means it cannot be made into a fraction. It can only be written as an infinite number. It also never repeats itself. Pi originally represented the ratio of a circle’s Pump Truck Vacuum Service Available circumference to its diameter, but it is used all over the world of mathematics today. Its symbol is universal and symbolic. Many people from across the world celebrate pi day, even if they don’t share the same language. The discovery of pi stretches back to the ancient Babylonians. Humans have studied pi for about 4000 years. During this time, mathematicians have also created their own pi language. Many people also try to competitively recall the infinite number. The record belongs to Chao Lu, of China, who recited pi from memory to 67,890 places. That’s about 67,887 numbers longer than most people know! Some scholars even believe that pyramids in Egypt have been calculated around the use of pi. Pi has been used in many different areas throughout history, and it continues to be a worldwide phenomenon. $225.00 March 14 is always a fun day to try and teach students about the never-ending number known as pi. BOLIVAR BEACH BLOOMERS NEWS BY VICKIE GOSS

Galveston County Master Gardeners with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service is reaching out to Bolivar Peninsula. Denny Nor and Herman Auer came over to Crystal Beach this week to discuss having Bolivar Beach Bloomers sponsor their seminars on Gulf Coast Gardening here on the peninsula! They offer some excellent educational opportunities; usually at the AgriLife Extension Office at Carbide Park in La Marque. Recognizing the challenge for peninsula residents to attend events on the other side of the bay they offered to bring the seminars to us! At our Beach Bloomers meeting, April 4th, we will pick a topic and a Saturday in May to start sponsoring the Gulf Coast Gardening series. Watch for the announcement. If interested their web site is http://galveston.agrilife.org/horticulture/, this is where you will find their News Letter. If you’re like me I had never heard of Carbide Park in La Marque, they have The Discovery Garden which on paper looks very impressive. It includes Education in the Demonstration Garden which includes many stations of various types of gardening. Looks like a great place to take a field trip! Beach Bloomers will have a Spring Plant Sale Saturday April 21st, 10am to 2pm, at The Eagles Trade Days, 1835 Hwy 87 in Crystal Beach. The next Bolivar Beach Bloomers meeting will be Wednesday April 4, Bolivar Beach Bloomers meetings are always the 1st Wednesday of each month 10:30am at the Joe Faggard Community Center, 1750 Highway 87, Crystal Beach.
