IF experts made official landscape classifications (e.g. published papers), THEN we can find places [landscape hotspots] that are close to different landscape categories (regions, types, etc.)! Landscape Hotspots? Localities on the Earth‘s surface where greater than average thermallandscape diversityactivity takes place, often leading to volcanicexplosion of outbursts different experiences (Whittow, 2000)… The main motive • To analyse different landscape classifications of Europe and determine where the most diverse areas are. • To analyse diversity for the area of Slovenia. How did we do it? 1) Building database 2) Calculation of diversity for each landscape classification 3) Calculation of average diversity Landscape classifications Digital landscape classification (mainly) according to the natural factors. Name Number of categories in the (source) analysed area (highest level) Biogeographical regions (v2011) (EEA, 2011) 10 Environmental stratification of Europe (Mücher et al., 2003; Metzger et al., 2005; Jongman et al., 2006) 6* European landscape classification (Mücher et al., 2003; 2006; 2009) 8 Terrestrial ecoregions of the World (Olson et al., 2001) 6 Calculation of diversity for each landscape classification We calculated the number of unique landscape categories in 50 km radius for each cell (FOCAL STATISTICS in ArcGIS). Calculation of average diversity 1. We divided each map of landscape diversity with number of all unique landscape categories (regions, types) in corresponding classification, 2. we calculated average of all 4 classifications. Classification Number Landscape categories near of the hotspot categories Biogeographical regions 3/10 Alpine, AtlanticClassification, Boreal Number of Landscape categories near the categories hotspot Environmental stratification 4/6 Alpine, Atlantic, Boreal, of Europe BiogeographicalContinental regions 3/10 Alpine, Continental, Mediterranean European landscape 4/8 EnvironmentalAlpine, Atlantic stratification, Boreal, of Europe 4/6 Alpine, Atlantic, Continental, classification ContinentalClassification Number of MediterraneanLandscape categories near the Terrestrial biomes of the 4/7 EuropeanTemperate landscape Coniferous classification categories4/8 Alpine, Atlantichotspot, Continental , World Forests, Boreal Mediterranean Biogeographical regions 3/10 Alpine, Continental, Mediterranean TerrestrialForests/ Taigabiomes, Tundra, of the World 3/7 Temperate Coniferous Forests, Temperate Broadleaf and Temperate Broadleaf and Mixed Environmental stratification of Europe 3/6 Alpine, Continental, Mediterranean Mixed Forests Forests, Mediterranean European landscape classification 3/8 Alpine, Continental, Mediterranean Terrestrial biomes of the World 3/7 Temperate Coniferous Forests, Temperate Broadleaf and Mixed Forests, Mediterranean Motivation for further analysis (landscape diversity in Slovenia) • Because of Slovenia’s location at the intersection of the Mediterranean, Alps, Dinaric Alps, and Pannonian Basin, landscape diversity can be regarded as one of the country’s natural resources. • Diversity can be viewed as a development opportunity on the one hand, but on the other it may create specific challenges for spatial planning. The whole project workflow Data: relief types (7), rock types (15), vegetation types (15) Result New challenges FIELD WORK ADVANTAGE or THREAT? - high biodiversity, high development potential (tourism, diverse natural resources) ... - difficult transfer of good practices from one place to another ATTRACTIVENESS = DIVERSITY? … Thank you for your attention! SLOVENIAN ALPS Mangart, Photo by Bor Rojnik Slovenian Alps are truly remarkable, easily discovered by road as well as by trails suitable for hikers and cyclists. Marvellous panoramas, blooming meadows, alpine pastures and forests are surely never to be forgotten and are one of the most fascinating tourist spots in Slovenia. The high summits of the Julian Alps, the Karavanken chain and the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, open up amazing panoramas of the surrounding territory. It is hardly to find such a blooming meadows, alpine pastures and forests, elsewhere in the world within easy reach. The Julian Alps are a mountain range of the great Alps that stretches from northeastern Italy to Slovenia. They cover an estimated 4400 km², of which 1542 km² lies in Slovenia, and rise to 2,864 m at Mount Triglav, the highest peak in Slovenia. The entire mountain range constitutes about 150 mountains and is divided into two sections - the Western Julian Alps and the Eastern Julian Alps. 1 The Triglav National Park, boasting a number of peculiarities, is the largest and the earliest protected natural heritage site in the country. It is located in the north-west of Slovenia, more precisely in the Julian Alps. The park was named after the highest mountain of Slovenia, the Triglav, which is located nearly at the center of the park. It is the only National Park in Slovenia and among the earliest European parks. Pokljuka, is the southernmost highland marsh in Europe and a natural habitat of sphagnum moss. Near Kranjska Gora you can find nature reserve, the Zelenci, whom lakes provide Sava Dolinka with its source.

  • JULIAN ALPS TRIGLAV NATIONAL PARK 2The Julian Alps
1 JULIAN ALPS TRIGLAV NATIONAL PARK www.slovenia.info 2The Julian Alps The Julian Alps are the southeast- ernmost part of the Alpine arc and at the same time the mountain range that marks the border between Slo- venia and Italy. They are usually divided into the East- ern and Western Julian Alps. The East- ern Julian Alps, which make up approx- imately three-quarters of the range and cover an area of 1,542 km2, lie entirely on the Slovenian side of the border and are the largest and highest Alpine range in Slovenia. The highest peak is Triglav (2,864 metres), but there are more than 150 other peaks over 2,000 metres high. The emerald river Soča rises on one side of the Julian Alps, in the Primorska re- gion; the two headwaters of the river Sava – the Sava Dolinka and the Sava Bohinjka – rise on the other side, in the Gorenjska region. The Julian Alps – the kingdom of Zlatorog According to an ancient legend a white chamois with golden horns lived in the mountains. The people of the area named him Zlatorog, or “Goldhorn”. He guarded the treasures of nature. One day a greedy hunter set off into the mountains and, ignoring the warnings, tracked down Zlatorog and shot him. Blood ran from his wounds Chamois The Triglav rose and fell to the ground. Where it landed, a miraculous plant, the Triglav rose, sprang up. Zlatorog ate the flowers of this plant and its magical healing powers made him invulnerable. At the same time, however, he was saddened by the greed of human beings.

  • The British, Kugy, and Western Slovenia
182 The British, Kugy, and Western Slovenia Ksenija Rozman Plates 69-72 The Julian Alps, the Sava valley, the surroundings of the lakes at Bled and Bohin;, Lake Cerknica, the city of Ljubljana and the Postojna caves are areas which the British have been visiting for centuries-fust as scientists, later also as travellers and mountaineers, and today mainly as tourists. All these areas are readily accessible by organized motor co'ach tours which start from Bled, Bohinj and Kran;ska gora. This territory, once part of the multi-national Austrian empire, now is the western part of the republic of Slovenia, one of the six constituent republics of Yugoslavia. The highest mountain in Yugoslavia, Triglav (2863m), lies in Slovenia. Dr Julius Kugy once asked France Avein, the Slovenian moun taineer, climber and professor of electrical engineering, what part of the Julian Alps he liked the best. Avein decided on the western Julian Alps, but Kugy demurred; 'That's all right, my dear Avein, it's beautiful! But the eastern part has the Triglav. The Triglav is not a mountain, the Triglav is a realm.'l Forests, mountains, mountain flora, meadows, rivers and lakes are all naturally constituent parts of the globe-but so many prominent Britons have wri~ten so much in praise of Slovenia and its people that even the best educated European could hardly fail to take heed and to be flattered. Sir Humphry Davy, and after him Josiah Gilbert and GC Churchill thought that the valley of the Sava river was the most beautiful valley in Europe.

Pavel Gantar Cerkniško jezero skozi čas Diplomsko delo Ljubljana, 2010 ZAHVALA Najlepša hvala mami in očetu, ki sta mi omogočila študij in mi ves čas stala ob strani. Lake Cerknica through time The intermittent Lake Cerknica is undoubtedly one of the most interesting karst phenomena that has always attracted the interest of many visitors and researchers.

This volume of the “Portrait of the Regions” series responds to this need and follows on in a tradition which has seen four volumes devoted to the current Member States, a fifth to Hungary, a sixth volume dedicated to the Czech Republic and Poland, a seventh to the Slovak Republic and the most recent volume covering the Baltic States, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Examining the 12 statistical regions of Slovenia, this ninth volume in the series has an almost identical structure to Volume 8, itself very similar to earlier publications.
