All rights reserved. 1 | 18 European Parliament Elections 2014 1.0 Introduction This briefing is part of DeHavilland EU’s Foresight Report series on the 2014 European elections and provides a preliminary overview of the candidates standing in the UK for election to the European Parliament in 2014. In the United Kingdom, the election for the country’s 73 Members of the European Parliament will be held on Thursday 22 May 2014. The elections come at a crucial junction for UK-EU relations, and are likely to have far-reaching consequences for the UK’s relationship with the rest of Europe: a surge in support for the UK Independence Party (UKIP) could lead to a Britain that is increasingly dis-engaged from the EU policy-making process. In parallel, the current UK Government is also conducting a review of the EU’s powers and Prime Minister David Cameron has repeatedly pushed for a ‘repatriation’ of powers from the European to the national level. These long-term political developments aside, the elections will also have more direct and tangible consequences. -

European Elections in the UK Media Briefing 7th May 2014 UKIP and the 2014 European Parliament elections Dr Philip Lynch ([email protected]) & Dr Richard Whitaker ([email protected]) University of Leicester UKIP and the 2014 European Elections Philip Lynch ( [email protected], @drphiliplynch ) and Richard Whitaker ( [email protected], @rickwhitaker ) Department of Politics and International Relations, University of Leicester UKIP go into the 2014 European elections in a far stronger position than they did five years earlier. The crucial differences are first, that UKIP have not experienced the decline in support in general election polling that they normally do after a European election. On the contrary, they are now consistently placed in third position in polls of general election vote intentions. Second, their ratings in polls of European election vote intention are some ten points higher on average than they were in the run up to the 2009 contest for seats in the European Parliament (EP). Third, they have more than double the number of members and a much better, even if still small base in local councils having secured 147 seats in the 2013 local elections. Fourth, while they have benefitted in the past from Conservative supporters lending UKIP their vote, they are in an even better position to do so this time around given that the Tories are now in government. On top of that, if UKIP’s campaign to win even more support from working class voters is successful, they will make headway in areas where Labour are traditionally strong. The presence of the Liberal Democrats in government alongside the collapse of the BNP add to the auspicious conditions for UKIP in 2014. -

Jonathan Bartley and Sian Berry’s speech to Autumn Conference 2020 2 October 2020 [Sian] Welcome to this extraordinary Green Party conference! We’re really sorry we can’t all be together today – but it does give me and Jonathan a chance to do things a little bit differently! So we have come here to the Broadgate cinema, in one of the very oldest parts of London. Because we think at a moment like this, it’s good to reflect on our history – and plan for our future. We live in such alarming times, but they are also times of possibility. [Jonathan] If your social media is anything like mine, your feed will be full of people asking: “What the hell is up with 2020?” Fires in the arctic and the US. Refugees in the channel. Thousands sleeping rough on our streets. A pandemic that has killed a million people. I was sitting at home a couple of weeks ago, and I switched on “Extinction: the facts” – the David Attenborough documentary. And I found the tears just rolling down my cheeks. But I think I was crying for two reasons. There’s the obvious one. Who is not moved by the countless species being lost? How? How, have we let this mass destruction happen? But the second reason was the poignancy with which the Attenborough programme brought home the connections between the climate and the ecological crisis, coronavirus, and the way our economy and society is structured. Everything is a green issue. Everything is connected. That is finally being recognised. -

Commencement MAY 2020 WELCOME FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends: This is an occasion of profoundly mixed emotions for all of us. On one hand, there is the pride, excitement, and immeasurable hope that come with the culmination of years of effort and success at the University of Connecticut. But on the other hand, there is the recognition that this year is different. For the first time since 1914, the University of Connecticut is conferring its graduate and undergraduate degrees without our traditional ceremonies. It is my sincere hope that you see this moment as an opportunity rather than a misfortune. As the Greek Stoic philosopher Epictetus observed, “Difficulties show us who we are.” This year our University, our state, our nation, and indeed our world have faced unprecedented difficulties. And now, as you go onward to the next stage of your journey, you have the opportunity to show what you have become in your time at UConn. Remember that the purpose of higher education is not confined to academic achievement; it is also intended to draw from within those essential qualities that make each of us an engaged, fully-formed individual – and a good citizen. There is no higher title that can be conferred in this world, and I know each of you will exemplify it, every day. This is truly a special class that will go on to achieve great things. Among your classmates are the University’s first Rhodes Scholar, the largest number of Goldwater scholars in our history, and outstanding student leaders on issues from climate action to racial justice to mental health. -

European Parliament Rue Wiertz Brussels 04 October 2016 Dear Prime Minister May, Dear President Hollande, Whilst we welcome the recent attention both your Governments have given to the ongoing appalling conditions for people living in camps in Northern France, we are writing to express our concerns regarding the latest developments on the site including the building of a four-metre high concrete wall in the port of Calais. We especially have grave concerns about the safety of unaccompanied children as plans are made to close the camps. Every time the camps are cleared, children go missing. It is essential that vulnerable young people are taken to safety before the camps begin to be emptied. It is already intolerable that children are living in such conditions. The dangers lone child migrants face, including sexual exploitation, violence and forced labour, are well documented. It is inexcusable that these conditions are found on the border between two of the richest countries in the world. It is unthinkable that forced eviction from the camps will happen with no alternative arrangements in place for these minors. We know that many of the children wish to reach Britain to join family members and that they have a legal right to do so. More than a year has passed since the UK Government committed to transfer unaccompanied refugee children, yet only a tiny number have arrived in the UK, and the processing of applications remains inexcusably slow. The tragic reality at present is that children hold more trust in smugglers than in the authorities which are failing to properly implement the legislation which would allow them safe passage to the UK. -

Greens express profound disappointment over Labour Party failure to support fair voting system 27 September 2021 The Green Party has criticised the Labour leadership for failing to ensure the party backed a vote to support proportional representation at its conference today [Monday 27 September]. [1] Labour conference defeated the motion after it was sent to a card vote. This came after 150 Constituency Labour Parties submitted motions on the topic and more than 83% of members previously said they support the idea. [2] Zack Polanski, Green Party spokesperson on Democracy and Citizen Engagement, said: “This is a really disappointing decision by the Labour Party which shows a real lack of leadership and vision from the top of the party. “Labour members overwhelmingly support electoral reform, yet Keir Starmer has done next to nothing to ensure that his party’s delegates voted through a motion which could have revolutionised British politics and put an end to the Tory stranglehold on our failed democratic system. “In the conference hall, speaker after speaker argued passionately for Labour to adopt proportional representation in its next manifesto, yet it still did not pass. Without proportional representation and electoral cooperation Labour has an impossible mountain to climb and the country faces another five years of chaos with the Conservatives. “It is clear that British voters want to move on from the failure and division caused by the two-party system, and so it is extremely worrying to see Labour fail to grasp the need for a more cooperative and collaborative form of politics which will benefit everyone. -

AMIRETREAT17 Snap election surprises - a quantitative analysis of Facebook use by political actors in the 2017 UK General Election Matt Walsh, Department of Journalism, Media and Performance, University of Northampton 9/1/2017 Abstract: Political actors are increasingly curating their own audiences via social media, communicating directly with their supporters and bypassing political reporters and commentators. From Donald Trump to Jeremy Corbyn, politicians are finding that they can rouse supporters without recourse to a traditional media that tries to balance or mediate their message through its own filters. This paper will analyse the use of Facebook by political actors to communicate with voters during the UK’s snap election of 2017. Taking a quantitative approach, it will identify the key strategic themes and tactical approaches taken by the major parties and the party leaders over the course of the short campaign. It will consider to what extent the unexpected election and its surprising result were as a result of the motivation of voters through Facebook communities of interest. ANALYSIS OF FACEBOOK USE IN UK GENERAL ELECTION 2017 Introduction When Prime Minister Theresa May stepped into Downing Street on the morning of the 18th of April 2017, few people knew she was about to announce a snap General Election. Even The Times’s well-connected political columnist and Conservative member of the House of Lords, Daniel Finkelstein, a man so close to her predecessor that he used to contribute to drafts of David Cameron’s conference speeches, tweeted: ` Followed shortly afterwards by a rueful admission that predicting things is hard: Having returned from a walking holiday in Snowdonia convinced that she had an opportunity to secure her own mandate as Prime Minister, Theresa May caught not only her rivals on the hop but also her allies (Rayner, 2017). -

APPENDIX 1: THE RESULtS ANaLYSED John Curtice, Stephen Fisher, Robert Ford and Patrick English The outcome of the 2017 election seems to pose a serious challenge to claims about the decline of Britain’s two-party system. No less than 84.5% of the UK-wide vote was cast for either the Conservatives or Labour, well above the proportion at any election since 1970. At 2.88, the effective number of parties in the electorate (as conventionally calculated) is still somewhat above two, but is now well down on the figure of 3.71 that pertained as recently as 2010.1 But the term ‘two-party system’, is often used to imply more than two parties dominating the vote. Amongst other things, it is also taken to refer to a system in which power and ministerial office alternate between the Conservatives and Labour, one of whom, thanks to the electoral system, always enjoys an overall majority in the House of Commons. But in 2017 no single party secured an overall major- ity, and the election resulted in a minority Conservative government backed by a ‘confidence and supply’ arrangement with the DUP. This fol- lows an election in 2010 which also resulted in a hung parliament (and the formation of the country’s first post-war coalition) and another in 2015 that gave the Conservatives a majority of just 12, a majority that in precipi- tating the early 2017 ballot Theresa May indicated was too small. There is another reason to question whether the outcome of the 2017 election necessarily represented a return to some kind of ‘normality’. -

Parties often attract criticism from those outside their ranks, but they have multiple, complex roles to play in any liberal democratic society. Structuring competition and engagement The party system should provide citizens with a framework for simplifying and organising political ideas and discourses, providing coherent packages of policy proposals, so as to sustain vigorous and effective electoral competition between rival teams. Parties should provide enduring brands, able to sustain the engagement and trust of most citizens over long periods. Main parties should help to recruit, socialise, select and promote talented individuals into elected public office, from local council to national government levels. Party groups in elected legislatures and outside organisations should help to sustain viable and accountable leadership teams, and contribute to the scrutiny of public policies and elected officials’ behaviour, in the public interest. -

CL: Well, the first thing we would do is to say that it shouldn’t be used as a bargaining chip in the Brexit negotiations. And frankly, I think it just demonstrates the reckless incompetence of this government that it didn’t see this issue coming, and that’s why, for example, I didn’t vote to trigger Article 50. We felt it should not be triggered at the time that it was, and certainly not triggered with no conditions. And if you compare that with – EM: Specifically, if I may, on Gibraltar. I mean, one of your MEPs represents Gibraltar. I just wonder what your policy is on sovereignty, for example. CL: It’s up to the people of Gibraltar to decide that entirely. I mean, it’s not for us to say that, I think it’s entirely for them to decide what they want in terms of going forward. But I think it certainly raises some questions that you have 96 per cent of them who have voted to remain inside the EU. It’s quite hard to see exactly how that’s going to work, just as it’s hard, I have to say, to see exactly what’s going to happen in Northern Ireland with a hard border there as well. EM: You’re good Europeans. You see no merit in Spain’s claim at all? JB: No. I mean, it’s up to the people of Gibraltar to make their wishes clear.
