Liam Murphy – I am not a member, but have VOLVO in my blood

I came to SA on 26 December 1969 and joined Lawson Motors in February 1970 as Field Service Engineer with Peter Blackwell as his Manager.

I was then put in charge of the Volvo 142 Racing Car resulting in a third overall – 3rd in index of Performance, 1st Saloon in the 1970 Pietermaritz- burg 6 Hour Race.

I worked with some of South Africa’s top Drivers like Arnold Chatz, Collin Burford, Dave Haw- croft, Janni Kuhn, Lewis Cloete, Ove Andersson, Per Inga Walfritsson, Pat Moss, Jody Scheckter and Ian Scheckter. Then with Dudley Smith on the Rotary Engine Mazdas.

During my term with Lawson Motors / Team Lawson I became close friends with Tom Campher who visited me in Ireland some years back. I have been back to South Africa 5 times since then.

That friendship endured over all these years and as a result of that friendship I got to know Vic, Col- leen, Gerhard and their families resulting in an invite to race their Volvo P1800 at Zwartkops.

I left South Africa in 1974 to go to Volvo Sweden and ended up as Group Technical Director for Volvo in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Egypt. During that time, I rallied a factory supported Volvo 240 in the Rothmans Kuwait Rally and finished 2nd overall in 1977 and 1st overall in 1978. I competed in the 1978 Cyprus Rally in a Volvo 240.

On my return to Ireland I competed in 4 Rounds of the European Rally twice in a Volvo 240 Turbo and twice in a Ford Cosworth Sierra. Currently, in Ireland, I race a Volvo B230 142 and a PV 544.

“My love for SA has never changed over the years. I would especially like to thank Team Campher Volvo for the exceptional kindness and hospitality to me and my family and friends over the years and I am so looking forward to my next visit”.

Liam.

Our '71 122S history – Lindsay Bridger The restoration is another story and we were hoping to make the 2018 Saamtrek as exhibitors Firstly, best wishes for 2018 and compliments for and not as visitors, again. our good newsletter.

Towards the end of March 1971, Heather and I walked into the Lawsons showroom in Eloff St Ext, to have a look at an 'Amazon'. Well, things started moving rapidly when the salesman informed that, "no, we do not have a blue one and that brown one there, is our last 122S for sale.

They are no longer on the market and only 3 others for sale in RSA: two in Germiston and one in Cape Town." Was this just sales talk or what? No time for thinking this through! "Will you accept our oil- leaking 1100Austin as a trade-in?"

The deal was done, and we could collect "our" 122S from the 'top shop' on the 29th of March 1971. I don't think we slept a wink for the next few nights!

The big day finally arrived, and we were at the 'top shop' bright and early. A small gathering of staff to deliver their last 122S were present. Imagine their and our faces when I turned the key, and nothing happened!!

An unclosed door had run the battery down overnight! A push start got us started and that's how our journey with our beloved Volvo got moving. 47 years later, it is now getting all attention deserved, by a full restoration I am undertaking, having retired.

2018 Saamtrek survey What is abundantly clear is that the closer to Bloemfontein we are, the better the attendance, in Every year we have difficulty in deciding where 2014 the Gauteng members clearly proved that the National Saamtrek should be held to maximise being closer to Johannesburg does not increase attendance and make it as easy as possible for as their attendance! many to attend as possible, just to give you an idea Lets’ get to survey results – out of a possible138 of attendance over the last few years (AGM members that would have received the email (if attendees): you didn’t get the email means we don’t have your

From the above statistics we are hovering at 2005 Venue for 2018? Top three venues that came up is and before number’s! Why? Is it the venue? Is it Aldam Estate & Gariep tied with KZN Midlands the Club? Is it the economy? Our membership coming in third. So, it looks like we heading to the numbers have not varied that much? What is the Free State, another survey will follow specifically reason? Lack of interest? There must be a reason… asking which venue you would prefer, please participate, in the end you are the Club.

Breakfast Run to Parys Nov 2017 – Once again as soon as we arrived it was a frenzy of handshakes, laughter and people snapping photos floyd robertson left right and centre. Beforehand I had arranged with Volvo Auto Baltic Vereeniging to have a bit Our November breakfast run lead us to Parys where of a show and tell for us with some of their new we all met up at the Aerodrome just outside of models that have been released. They had brought Parys. On the drive down, I was lucky enough to through a V40 D3 (I just recently upgraded to a catch up to the Geldenhuys family in their Volvo’s, Rebel Blue V40 D3 R-Design myself – Crazy so I joined their convoy. As soon as I pulled up there were extra’s and technology that is available at a push of already about 10 Volvo’s parked and waiting. The a button is absolutely amazing. best part to see was that not a single person was sitting in their car waiting. Everyone was walking I would definitely recommend taking a V90 for a around, chatting, introducing themselves and test drive some time. (One day when I’m big ill talking about their cars. Vintage Racing and a Measure of Revenge – P1800 driver

Many cars and drivers have had a second chance in contemporary vintage racing. Surprisingly, the Volvo 1800 has been a star in this field. Thanks to slightly looser rules and lobbying that have allowed certain modifications, the 544, 122 and particularly the 1800 have shown their true potential.

When I considered getting into vintage racing in the '80s, I decided to do it in a Volvo after seeing In 1991, Klaus Schonfeld's 544 won the group John Morley run with Cobras and XK-Es at race at Watkins Glen for all pre-'62 sports cars and Watkins Glen. In only my second race in my sports sedans - one Volvo against more than a 1800, and the first with a modified engine, I dozen Porsche 356s! That same weekend, I finished second in an "all comers" vintage race in finished fourth in group and first in class in a the rain at Summit Point - I led much of the race group of pre-'68 sports cars that included Lotus until a misfire due to a cracked distributor rotor Elans, Porsche 911s, Corvettes and Jaguars. killed power above 5000 RPM.

In 1990, at one of the country's largest vintage In 1992, at the Canadian Vintage Motorsports races at Mid Ohio Racetrack, two 1800s and a 544 Festival at Shannonville, Ontario, my 1800 qualified in three of the top four spots in a class finished first overall in a group of both small and that included all non-V8, pre-1962 production large bore vintage sports cars, including 911s, sports cars. 914s, Corvettes and XK-Es.

On the West Coast, there were similar wins by Rauch and Rodenbush. Volvos made the cover of vintage racing magazines. Vintage clubs moved us up in class to the point that in '96, SVRA, the largest vintage group at the time in the eastern U.S., classified the P1800 in its B production class of pre-1972 sports cars and sedans, where it was pitted against Ferraris, Porsche 911s, Datsun 240Zs, Lotus Elans, Lotus Super Sevens, etc., and we still won (I finished first in class in every In September 1998, Gary Jebsen won his group SVRA vintage race I entered that year). with SVRA at Summit Point. In 1999, Ian Locke, in his first time out in his 122, won the vintage enduro at Mosport Motorsport Park -- you may have seen the photo of his car in Grassroots Motorsports. In the Midwest, David Hueppchen has been impressive racing an 1800, usually with a basically stock engine, and the Keller brothers have raced numerous old Volvos with success. Back on the East Coast, Duane Matejka has dominated the Volvo Historic Series, beating cars in the larger displacement as well as 2 litre In 1998, two of the largest vintage events in the classes. Personally, every time I drive my 1800 U.S. were the dual 50th Anniversary events at out of the paddock to the false grid past lines of Watkins Glen. My 1800 qualified second in group Porsches, Alfas, Jags, Corvettes, Loti and at both the HSR and SVRA events. In each case, Datsun’s to my position at the front of the grid, I the only car with a faster time was the original feel a sense of Volvo pride, satisfaction and a national championship-winning, factory-backed, small measure of revenge on those competing cars BRE (Brock Racing Enterprises) Datsun 240Z. that allegedly killed off the 1800 a long time ago.
