Polestar 1 – Full Product Details

PURE, PROGRESSIVE, PERFORMANCE

The first from , named , forms a halo for the Polestar brand. The Polestar 1 is a two-door, 2+2-seater Coupé with an ‘Electric Performance Hybrid’ powertrain. A maximum of 500 per year will be built.

“Most electric cars are fast - that’s a product of the attributes of electric motors. However, for Polestar, performance is far more holistic than just straight-line speed. It’s about acceleration, of course, but it’s also about cornering, braking, suspension control, chassis feedback and steering feel. This is what Polestar calls Progressive Performance,” says Thomas Ingenlath, Chief Executive Officer of Polestar.

Exterior – Body

BODY IN CARBON FIBER

Practically all parts of the body, including the doors, bonnet/hood and boot/trunk lid, are made of carbon fiber (i.e. carbon fiber reinforced polymer, ‘CFRP’ or ‘CRP’) for maximum stiffness, torsional rigidity and lightness. The torsional rigidity is increased by 45% and the structure is lighter-weight than a body in steel. This reduced weight amongst the upper portion of the car also contributes to a lowered center of gravity.

Despite the body being made of carbon fiber, the only places the raw carbon fiber material is visible on the exterior is at the lower front and rear sections. When the boot/trunk lid is opened, a structure on the inside is unpainted, and carbon fiber is visible.

Benefits

The stiff and torsionally rigid body, together with the low center of gravity, contribute to great handling with consistent and precise chassis dynamics.

The carbon fiber material contributes to the comparatively low overall weight of the car, which in turn contributes to agile handling as well as lower emissions.

The body styling on the Polestar 1 includes features and shapes that would not be possible to manufacture in sheet steel. A body in carbon fiber is a more exclusive solution, which contributes greatly to the high-tech, high-performance image.

The carbon fiber material only visible on the lower front and rear of the exterior gives an understated design touch. That the carbon fiber material is visible when the boot/trunk lid is opened is another nice, understated design touch.

How Does It Work?

What is generally called carbon fiber is actually carbon fiber reinforced polymer. The principle is the same as for glass fiber reinforced plastic (GRP), but the glass fiber is replaced by carbon fiber, a considerably stronger and lighter material. The ‘plastic’, or resin, can be polyester or polymer. Carbon fiber polymer is used, as it is a considerably stronger material.

1

The carbon fibers come in woven ‘mats’ and are baked into the polymer in a very large pressurized oven, called an autoclave. The thickness of the carbon fibers and the direction/pattern they are woven into are each adapted to each particular area and use.

Exterior – Design

DESIGN

The design of the Polestar 1 is based upon the much-praised Concept Coupé. A great source of inspiration for the Concept Coupé was the , today a classic icon. Our designers wanted to keep the basic design of the Concept Coupé and just make small changes in order to adapt it for the market of today and the future.

The decision to make the body of the production car in carbon fiber gave our designers even more freedom to create what they really wanted. The carbon fiber material made it possible to create crisper lines and sharper creases for a modern, technical look. For example, this can be seen in the bonnet/hood and wings/fenders. It also enabled our designers to create the powerful shape of the rear wings, reminiscent of those on the Volvo P1800.

Exterior – Front

BONNET/HOOD

The bonnet/hood is of the ‘clam shell’ or over-wrap type. This means it wraps over the top part of the front wings/fenders. This gave our designers creative freedom to shape the top of the front end without any shut lines. The shut lines on the sides have the effect of emphasizing the distance between the front wheels and doors – a typical feature of powerful cars.

Benefits

Very clean looking front end, without any shut lines from above. The practically invisible bonnet/hood is a premium statement. The shut lines on the sides emphasize the great distance between the front wheels and doors, which adds to the powerful, dynamic profile.

Polestar Emblem

A Polestar symbol is fitted to the front of the bonnet/hood, which provides a clear display of the Polestar logo. The emblem is always presented in body color with a matte finish.

GRILLE/“Grid”

The grille, known as the ‘grid’ at Polestar, has a unique Polestar design with a sharp outline. The frame is available in High Gloss Black or a Bright Chrome finish. The grid itself has a semi-closed design with a Polestar signature mesh and vertical strips in Bright Chrome. There is no emblem in the grid and it is placed on the front of the bonnet.

Benefits

The Polestar signature grid design gives a powerful impression, as seen from the front or in the rear-view mirror of a car ahead. The Bright Chrome strips and Chrome frame embody elegance, in contrast to the powerful look of the High Gloss Black frame.

2

LOWER GRILLE

A dynamically shaped lower grille in High Gloss Black is part of the front design. Under the lower grille is a ‘blade’ in visible carbon fiber, which stretches all the way across the front and up along the outer sides of the lower outer grilles, with two vertical strips integrated into the lower grille.

Benefits

The lower grille adds to the powerful look of the front and the carbon fiber material adds to the high performance and high technological look.

LOWER OUTER GRILLES

Two dynamically designed lower outer grilles are set into deep recesses on either side of the lower front. The grilles have an insert with vertical bars in High Gloss Black. The visible carbon fiber lower grille frame is extended all the way to the sides of the lower outer grilles. The lower outer grilles, as well as smaller grilles below, allow for engine cooling. Fog lights are emitted – their functions taken care of by the highly advanced dynamic LED headlights.

Benefits

The lower outer grilles and their design add greatly to the powerful impression. The design of the lower carbon fiber frame that reaches up around the lower outer grilles is an element that also contributes to the powerful front visuals. This also provides efficient cooling to the engine.

LOWER FRONT DESIGN

Exposed carbon fiber runs across the entire width of the lower front, then turns upwards at either end and has two vertical elements in the middle. Together with the lower rear insert, this is the only visible carbon fiber on the exterior.

Benefits

The design of the lower element underlines the powerful impression of the Polestar 1 as seen from the front or in the rear-view mirror of a car ahead. The visible, unpainted carbon fiber adds a discreet high-technological look.

HEADLIGHTS

The Polestar 1 is fitted with highly advanced dynamic full-LED headlights and functions such as Active High Beam and Active Bending Lights.

LED Headlight Technology

LEDs, or Light Emitting Diodes, project extremely strong light – more than twice as strong as halogen lamps – and give a longer and wider light pattern which is comparable to xenon lights. However, LED lighting does not have the blue color tint of xenon light. According to research, the whiter light enables the human eye to experience LED lighting 15–20% stronger than comparable xenon lights.

3

Benefits

The LEDs provide a more relaxed, safe and comfortable drive in the dark, thanks to the strong white light and the long and wide pattern of that light. These lights do not lose any luminance over time and will last the lifetime of the car. LEDs also provide lower running costs over the life of the car, consume extremely small amounts of power and avoid the inconvenience of blown headlight bulbs.

Unique Design

The LED headlight units have a creative design. The light guide, in the shape of a hammer, guides the light from hidden LEDs behind it to give a solid light without any visible LED dots. The light guide is used for the daytime running lights, position lights and indicators.

Benefits

This design provides a unique, modern look and extremely strong identity, day and night.

Automatic Leveling

The light beams from the LED headlights are automatically kept at the optimum level, regardless of the number of people or amount of cargo on board. The system will even account for the ‘squat’ that occurs during acceleration.

Benefits

The illumination of the road ahead is always optimal, regardless of the load being carried, and there is less risk of dazzling drivers in oncoming vehicles (and thereby also less risk of being hit by an oncoming vehicle).

Daytime Running Lights

The daytime running lights consist of hidden LEDs that light up the hammer-shaped light guide within the headlight unit. In daylight, the front daytime running lights and the rear taillights are always activated. A ‘twilight sensor’ and a tunnel detection system automatically turn on the dipped beam and dim the daytime running lights slightly when it gets dark or when driving into a tunnel.

Benefits

The daytime running lights have a unique look, which contributes greatly to the identity of the car. Not having to turn the dipped beam on and off makes these lights convenient and safe.

Front Indicators

The indicators use the same LEDs as the daytime running lights in the hammer-shaped part of the headlight. When the indicator is used, the light in the hammer changes from white to an amber color (the white light goes out completely when the indicator is used).

Benefits

The indicators make a great impression and the color-coordinated side indicators in the door mirrors symbolize the attention to detail.

4

A triple-flash function is available by pressing lightly up or down on the indicator stalk, which is easy and safe to use, particularly when overtaking. This function also makes it more likely that the indicators will be used by a driver.

Side Marker Lights

In the North American market, the LED headlight units have side marker lights (an LED behind the side reflector).

Lenses

The clear headlight lenses are made from a virtually crack-proof polycarbonate, which has a coating that reduces wear from UV-radiation, chemicals and abrasion.

Benefits

These lenses provide safety and economy as they are practically unbreakable and will maintain their clarity.

Headlight Cleaning

The headlights are cleaned by very efficient high-pressure jets. The nozzles are hidden under body-colored covers on the bumper. When activated, the high pressure pushes the nozzles out together with the covers. The headlight cleaning is automatically activated together with the windshield cleaning. As a large quantity of washer fluid is used with high- pressure cleaning, the cleaning system has an intelligent function – if the windshield washer is used more than once every 10 minutes, the headlight washer is only activated every fifth time that the windshield washer is used.

Benefits

This system provides preventive safety and less stress on the eyes when driving in the dark, in bad weather conditions and/or on dirty roads, thanks to clean headlights.

The intelligent sequential cleaning means lower costs for washer fluid and convenience, as there is less need to top it off.

Active High Beam Illumination

Active high beam allows for full illumination at all times but adapts to prevent dazzling drivers of oncoming cars as well as drivers of cars traveling ahead in the same direction, while still illuminating both sides of the car in front. Sections of light are blocked out by automatically switching off specific diodes in the LED array, creating gaps in the stream of light emitted from the headlights.

Benefits

This offers safety and convenience as the driver does not have to remember to switch between the dipped and main beams. The active high beam illumination also provides preventive safety both for the people in the car and for pedestrians and cyclists, thanks to the greater area illuminated in front of the car even when meeting, or driving behind other vehicles. There is less risk of missing wildlife alongside the road and dazzling drivers of oncoming vehicles (and thereby also less risk of being hit by an oncoming vehicle).

5

Active Bending Lights

Active bending lights that turn with the steering are standard.

Benefits

This allows for a better view through corners when it is dark, which is both safe and reassuring, and less strain on the eyes since more of the road is illuminated.

Low beam is the same as dipped beam and high beam is the same as full beam.

FRONT PARK ASSIST

Four ultrasonic sensors integrated into the front lower grilles measure the distance to obstacles up to 31.5 inches (0.8 m) from the car and under 6 mph (10 km/h). The distance to each sensor is displayed graphically on the center display. The distance is also indicated with an intermittent warning sound from the front loudspeakers, increasing in frequency the closer the car gets to the object, down to a distance of 11.8 inches (0.3 m) when the sound becomes constant. The warning sound volume can be adjusted. If the audio system is on, the volume is reduced when the park assist warning sound is activated. Front Park Assist can be switched off via the central touch screen.

Benefits

Front Park Assist makes it considerably easier and safer to park, and looks good as the sensors are almost invisible to the eye.

360° CAMERA

This feature makes it possible for the driver to see a bird’s-eye view of the car’s surroundings around a virtual picture of the car on the center display. The surround view is available at speeds of up to 6 mph (10 km/h).

Benefits

This camera is extremely convenient, safe and secure, particularly when parking or maneuvering in confined spaces. The wide view makes it possible to see obstacles or, for example, a parking space at a distance from the car.

By pointing on the camera images on the touch screen, the driver can get a view only from that particular camera. The front view is approximately 180° and can be activated when driving up to approximately 12 mph (20 km/h). In the rear view, lines on the screen that show exterior width of the car can be switched on. The rear camera can also be switched to a zoomed-in view very close to the car. The driver can also choose either of the side views via the touch screen.

Benefits

It is convenient and safe to see around buildings or other obstacles when driving out into a street or a junction. It is also convenient and safe to be able to get a view of the area behind the car when reversing, a 180° view behind the car before reversing, and a view of the entire area beside the car when maneuvering in tight circumstances.

6

How It Works

The bird’s-eye view is enabled by four hidden cameras – one integrated into the front, one integrated into each of the door mirrors and one hidden beside the rear number plate (same as the rear Park Assist camera) – and a computer. The four camera ‘fish-eye’ views are digitally processed to create an uninterrupted view of the surroundings, as seen from a point above the car, on the center screen. The very advanced cameras produce high-resolution images.

WINDSHIELD WIPER BLADES WITH INTEGRATED WASHER NOZZLES AND HEATING

The ‘Aquablade’ windshield wipers feature a series of holes along the rubber blades. When washing is activated by the driver, washer fluid starts being emitted just before the wiper arm starts to move. Washer fluid is only emitted on the forward stroke, not on the return stroke. In addition, the wiper blades are heated.

Benefits

This provides efficient and uniform washing at all speeds and under all circumstances (strong wind, for example) and saves washer fluid. There is less risk for dry wiping over a dirty windshield as washer fluid is emitted before the wiper starts to move. There is also less risk of washer fluid disturbing the driver’s view, which is common with traditional washing, as fluid is emitted right in front of the wiper blade and immediately wiped away. The heating of the wiper blades reduces the risk that the windshield cannot be washed because washer fluid has frozen in the nozzles, or that the blades have frozen against the glass.

RAIN SENSOR

When activated, a sensor on the inside of the windshield detects water on the windshield and automatically turns the windshield wipers on and off. The sensor also controls the speed or the interval of the wipers according to the amount of water on the windshield. The sensitivity can be adjusted by the driver.

Benefits

The sensor provides comfort and safety as the driver does not have to turn the windshield wipers on and off or choose the right interval or speed.

WIPING OF THE WINDSHIELD CAMERA AREA

The area in front of the integrated camera in the windshield is wiped by the windshield wipers, allowing systems that use the camera to perform at their best, no matter the weather.

Exterior – Sides

SIDE SHAPE

The sides are very dynamically shaped, with creases and concave shapes interacting with one another. A subtle crease runs from the front wing/fender along the door to the door handle. The lower sides have a slightly concave shape above a crease that stretches along the entire side. The rear wings/fenders have a wide sharp-edged shoulder that protrudes from the upper body. Behind the rear wheel, the lower side crease continues, protruding from

7

the side and then turning diagonally upwards, finally connecting to the rear wing/fender shape, providing a powerful and dynamic look.

SIDE WINDOW TRIM

The side window trim is available in High Gloss Black or Bright Chrome.

Benefits

The High Gloss Black trim gives a sporty look, while the Bright Chrome trim adds elegance.

DOORS

The doors are very wide and have no window frames.

Benefits

The wide frameless doors give a sporty and classic coupé look when a door is open, particularly if the window is down. The wide doors contribute to the well-proportioned coupé design and facilitate ingress to and egress from the rear seat.

DOOR HANDLES

The door handles have a unique design and are completely integrated into the doors for the best aerodynamic properties and look. They are fitted in a specially designed frame, which is body-colored just like the handles. To open a door, a concave button is pushed and then the handle presents itself.

Benefits

The uniquely designed integrated handles in their frames add to the uniqueness of the design, which contributes to good aerodynamic properties.

GROUND LIGHTING

Lights under the doors illuminate the area below the open door.

Benefits

This contributes to a welcoming feel and provides less risk of the driver and front seat passenger stepping into, for example, an unseen puddle of water.

DOOR MIRRORS

The door mirrors have a design with creases and angles that harmonize with the body. The shape of the mirror housing has an aerodynamic design with slim LED side indicators discreetly integrated into the lower part. The mirrors are fitted on round pillars on the shoulder of the door instead of being fitted in the traditional way, in the lower corner of the side window frame. The mirror housings are body-colored and the mirror bases are painted High Gloss Black.

Benefits

This provides a clean and dynamic look and better forward ¾ view, thanks to the placement of the door mirrors which make it easier to see beyond the A-pillar. The design contributes to

8

low aerodynamic drag and thereby lower wind noise, fuel-consumption and CO2 emissions. The mirrors also offer safety for the people inside and outside the car as side indicators in the door mirrors are highly visible from all angles.

Frameless Design

The door mirrors on the Polestar 1 have a frameless design. This means the mirror glass extends all the way to the edges of the mirror housing. The result is a 30% reduction in drag and a slimmer, more elegant look. The design of the housing harmonizes with the design of the bonnet/hood and rest of the exterior. The minimalistic design stands out and harmonizes with the overall modern impression of the Polestar 1.

Wide-Angle Field

A wide-angle field is integrated in the outer part of the mirrors, offering less risk for collisions with cars passing or about to pass, as the fields practically cover the blind spots on both sides.

Electrically Adjustable, Heated and Folding

The mirrors are electrically adjustable, heated (activated together with the heated rear window) and folding (either activated by the driver or automatically when the car is locked). There is less risk of damage from passing vehicles thanks to the folding function, which also makes maneuvering and parking in very tight spaces easier.

Curb View When Reversing

Both door mirrors can adjust to show the curb when reverse gear is engaged, automatically or activated by the driver. This makes it easy to park close to the curb and thereby reduces the risk of damage from passing vehicles and of curbing the wheels.

Automatic Dimming

The door mirrors, as well as the interior rear-view mirror, dim automatically. This provides increased preventive safety and comfort due to less stress on the eyes and less risk to be dazzled by the headlights of cars behind. The dimming function features a new, more natural grey color tint as opposed to the blue-green tint featured in similar systems.

LAMINATED SIDE WINDOWS

The side windows have laminated glass, just as the windshield. These windows consist of two sheets of glass with a layer of plastic foil laminated in between. The laminated windows offer a quieter experience in the cabin and the front side windows have a special plastic inter- layer that reduces noise even more. Additionally, the lamination reduces UV radiation through the windows and practically eliminates the risk of break-ins through the windows, as the plastic layer keeps the glass in place even if it is broken.

CAP-FREE FUEL FILLING

The fuel filler lid is opened by a gentle push (it is locked/unlocked with the central vehicle lock). When it is opened, there is no cap inside that needs to be unscrewed and removed. The fuel pipe has an integrated seal that opens when the filling nozzle is inserted and closes when it is removed.

9

Benefits

Cap-free fuel filling is very convenient as you don’t need to remember to push an opening button inside before getting out of the car or unscrew and remove a fuel filler cap and then put it back. There is also less risk of getting dirt and fuel residue on your hands.

A special funnel for filling from a fuel can is included in the tool kit.

FILLING AND CHARGING LIDS

The lids for filling fuel and for charging are placed on the opposite sides of the car. The fuel filler lid is placed on the right-hand side and the charging lid on the left, providing a harmonious design.

Exterior – Wheels

WHEELS

The Polestar 1 has 21-inch alloy wheels with wide, low profile tires. The front rims are 9 inches wide with 275/30R21 tires and the rear rims are 10 inches wide with 295/30R21 tires.

Benefits

The large alloy wheels and the very wide 30-profile tires contribute to great handling, road- holding characteristics and the high-performance look. The wider rear wheels contribute to maximum traction during dynamic cornering, particularly in ‘Power’ or ‘AWD’ mode, and a real high-performance look, particularly under the wide rear wings/fenders.

Exterior – Roof

PANORAMIC ROOF

The Polestar 1 comes standard with a fixed panoramic glass roof that stretches all the way from the top of the windshield to the upper edge of the rear window. The glass is tinted for minimal transmission of: light, 5–7%; heat, max 5%; UV, max 0.5% (approximate values). Thanks to the very efficient reduction of light, heat and UV radiation, a sunshade under the glass roof is not needed. Under the glass is a very strong carbon fiber frame. The front and rear roof headers are made of carbon fiber.

Benefits

The panoramic roof allows for a feeling of freedom and airiness inside the cabin, a high reduction of light, cabin heat and UV radiation, as well as a good pleasing exterior aesthetic look.

Laminated Glass

The panoramic roof is made of laminated glass consisting of two sheets of glass with a plastic foil in-between, which is an extremely rare solution.

10

Benefits

The laminated glass allows for a lower noise level in the cabin, and reduces the risk of break- ins through the glass, as the plastic foil helps the glass maintain integrity even if broken.

ROOF TRIM

The roof has High Gloss Black or Bright Chrome trim running all the way from the outer sides of the windshield along the roof and down on either side of the rear window.

Benefits

The roof trim offers a different design feature that adds to the unique design of the Polestar 1, while the High Gloss Black trim adds to the powerful look and the Bright Chrome trim adds elegance.

ROOF WITHOUT ANTENNA

There is no antenna on the roof. Instead it has been integrated into the hat shelf, providing a clean roof design without any protruding antenna.

POLESTAR SHINING THROUGH

Our designers came up with a very special idea – to put an illuminated Polestar symbol on top of the overhead console. In this way the Polestar symbol can be seen from the outside. As there is a distance between the console and the glass roof, the driver and passengers see the Polestar symbol reflected in the glass roof.

Benefits

This is an ingenious way to share the Polestar symbol for people outside and inside – a solution never seen before.

Exterior – Rear

ACTIVE REAR SPOILER

An active rear spoiler is standard. It automatically raises from its integrated flush position when the speed exceeds 62 mph (100 km/h) and is retracted when the speed is reduced below 44 mph (70 km/h). The spoiler can also be raised manually by pressing a button on the front of the driver’s door armrest. Manual mode is indicated by an orange LED in the button. For the spoiler to be retracted manually at speeds below 19 mph (30 km/h), the button must be depressed during the complete retraction process.

Benefits

This allows for greater stability at higher speeds, thanks to higher downforce. The need for keeping the button depressed at speeds below 19 mph (30 km/h) acts as a pinch protection.

TAILLIGHTS

Just like the front lights, the taillights have a unique design. The shape emphasizes the special rear end design. The LED rear lights are fitted in the body and boot/trunk lid. LED

11

brake lights and indicators are fitted in the body, as are reverse lights. A fog light is fitted in the body. Separate reflectors are fitted at the rear and sides with side marker lights.

Benefits

The taillights have a clean, powerful design and provide safety thanks to strong and efficient lights. The LED light guide shape also contributes to a strong identity.

THIRD BRAKE LIGHT

A third brake light is mounted in the upper part of the rear window, providing visibility for rear traffic.

EXHAUST TAIL PIPES There is a large, wide exhaust tail pipe on either side, nicely integrated into the lower rear end design. The tail pipes are finished in black chrome.

Benefits

The size and shape of the tail pipes give a powerful impression from the rear yet is still understated and discreet thanks to the black chrome finish.

LOW LICENSE PLATE POSITION

The license plate has a low mounting position, adding to the clean rear end design and the low powerful look from behind.

REAR PARK ASSIST

Four ultrasound sensors are integrated into the rear of the car and scan the distance to obstacles up to 59.1 inches (1.5 m) away from the car. The distance from a detected obstacle to each sensor is displayed graphically on the center screen. The distance is also indicated with an intermittent warning sound from the rear loudspeakers, increasing in frequency the closer the car gets to the object, down to a distance of 11.8 inches (0.3 m) when the sound becomes constant. The warning sound volume can be adjusted. If the audio system is on, the volume is reduced when the park assist warning sound is activated.

Benefits

Rear park assist makes parking considerably easier and safer.

REAR PARK ASSIST CAMERA

A rear-view camera is hidden on the right side of the number plate area. When the driver engages reverse gear, it shows a wide view behind the car on the center display. Lines on the display show the path the rear wheels will take according to the steering wheel angle. Dotted lines indicate the exterior dimensions of the car, which can be switched off in the menu system. The camera can also be switched to a zoomed-in view very close to the car. The rear camera is included in the 360° Camera.

Benefits

This camera makes reversing considerably easier and safer, particularly reversing into parking spaces.

12

Exterior – Underside

UNDERTRAY AND ENGINE SHIELD

There are undertray panels and an engine shield under the car.

Benefits

These decrease running costs and CO2 emissions thanks to lower aerodynamic drag and lift forces, which contribute to lower fuel consumption. The lower drag and lift forces can also contribute to stability at higher speeds. The panels and shield also lower noise levels inside the car and protect the underside from stone chipping and corrosion.

Interior – Design

COLORS

The overall interior color is Charcoal.

Upholstery Color

The upholstery is available in full Charcoal, or Charcoal with Zinc for the front seats.

Headlining Color

The headlining color is also Charcoal, providing a sporty look with all interior colors. The light Zinc interior and dark headliner offers a unique combination.

Stitching Color

There is a lot of stitching throughout the interior in the Polestar 1 which always matches the color of the leather – light stitching on light leather and dark stitching on dark leather. The rear side of the front seats are also always a charcoal color. The matching colors and amount of stitching offer an exclusive and understated elegance.

MATERIALS

The interior is clad in Nappa leather with unique stitching, providing an exclusive look, feel and smell. The front and rear backrests and head restraints have a unique surround, consisting of a stylized leather strip in the same color as the upholstery with a very special perforation – a combination of larger oval holes and small dots. The surrounding specially perforated leather strips add a really unique touch to the upholstery and interior. The side supports also have special braided stitching, adding to the exclusivity.

Silk metal trim

A strip of silk metal trim runs around the entire interior, from the edge of the dashboard and all the way around the hat shelf and its integrated speakers. In addition, strips of thin silk metal trim run along the middle of the dashboard and the doors’ carbon fiber panels. Silk metal trim is also found around the steering wheel center and buttons, as well as around the driver’s display and the dashboard air vents. The door handles are in the same silk metal

13

finish as well as the stainless-steel speaker grilles. All of this amounts to a sleek design package.

STEERING WHEEL – DESIGN

The Polestar 1 has a sports steering wheel in black with a leather-clad rim. The button areas are glossy black with surrounding silk metal trim. In the center is a Polestar emblem. This design harmonizes perfectly with the interior.

SPECIALLY DESIGNED LEATHER-CLAD OVERHEAD CONSOLE

A very special design feature of the Polestar 1 is the front overhead console. Our designers have created what they call a fuselage in the center with wings on either side. The complete overhead console is clad in leather, as well as the sun visors, which are very neatly integrated on either side. In the center are buttons for the interior lighting, and the Polestar Customer Care Center.

Benefits

The look and feel of the specially designed, leather-clad console, underline the premium level of the Polestar 1.

Polestar in the Sky

In the space between the protruding center part of the overhead console and the glass roof our designers came up with a very special idea – to put an illuminated Polestar symbol on top of the overhead console. In this way, the Polestar symbol is invisible from inside, but the driver and passengers can see it reflected in the glass roof, like a star in the sky (the space between the top of the overhead console and the reflection in the glass roof appears to be double the actual space seen by the human eye). In addition, the illuminated Polestar symbol is visible from the outside.

Benefits

This offers a unique experience for the driver and passengers – like a guiding star in the sky – and is an ingenious way to share the Polestar brand for people inside and outside, a solution never seen before.

LEATHER-CLAD DASHBOARD

The dashboard is clad in charcoal-colored leather with stitching in the same color, providing a very luxurious look.

Interior – Getting Inside

REMOTE CONTROL KEY

The wide upper and lower surfaces are clean, without any buttons – just a Polestar-symbol on the upper side. Buttons in chrome are discreetly integrated on the sides – for locking and unlocking the doors, the boot/trunk lid on one side, and a button for the panic alarm on the other side. At the upper end is a specially designed key ring holder.

14

Benefits

The smartly designed remote control with its Polestar symbol harmonizes with the design of the car and adds a sense of high-end style.

Emergency Metal Keyblade

A metal keyblade is hidden inside the remote control and can be used as a backup to manually unlock the car.

Opening/Closing of All Windows

If the unlock button is depressed for more than two seconds, all windows will open, allowing for fresh air before entering the vehicle. The reverse is true when holding down the lock button.

Remote Control Memory

Two remote controls come as standard and up to ten more can be ordered. A memory function for power-operated seat and door mirror adjustments is included in each remote control. When the car is unlocked with the remote control and the door is opened, the seat and door mirrors adjust to the positions they last had when that remote control was used. Individual settings for the Drive Modes are also stored in the remote control memory. This means that several users can have their own remote control and specific automatic adjustments to the seat and door mirrors.

KEYLESS

The car can be unlocked and locked without the need for inserting a key or pressing a remote control. The driver just needs to have the remote control in a pocket or a purse and the car is unlocked as soon as a hand is put on a door handle and locked when the locking button on one of the door handles is triggered. The engine is started and turned off without the need for inserting a key or the remote control into any receiver. As long as the driver has the remote control in the car, the engine is started by turning the start knob on the tunnel console and depressing the brake pedal at the same time, and turned off by turning the knob again.

Benefits

It is very convenient to be able to lock, unlock and start the engine without having to find a remote control and slide it into a dashboard slot, especially for those carrying bags or luggage.

TEXTILE MATS

Specially designed textile mats with perforated leather binding are fitted in the front and rear.

Benefits

The exclusive textile mats and leather binding contribute to a welcoming and luxurious feeling.

15

TREAD PLATES

The door openings have tread plates in carbon fiber. They have a Polestar symbol at one end and a ‘Polestar 1’ word mark and text on the carbon fiber body at the other end, and a longitudinal line in-between.

Benefits

This provides a premium and welcoming feeling as soon as one of the doors are opened and is a reminder of the Polestar brand to everyone who enters the car. The Polestar wordmark and text is a different design solution that adds to the high-tech image.

WELCOME LIGHTING

If the car is unlocked with the remote control the Welcome Lighting is activated. It consists of the position/parking lights (including the rear lights), rear number plate light and interior lighting (see ‘Ground Lighting’), plus side marker lights. The Welcome Lighting is activated for 30 seconds. If a door is opened it stays on for two more minutes, or less if the engine is started.

Benefits

This provides a welcoming and secure feeling, as the area around the car, as well as the interior, is lit.

GROUND LIGHTING

Lights under the doors illuminate the area below the open door, contributing the welcoming feeling, as well as lessening the risk of the driver or a passenger stepping into, for example, an unseen puddle of water.

INTERIOR LIGHTING

There is generous interior lighting. When the car is unlocked, a number of interior lights are illuminated – general lighting, footwell lights and mood lights. When a door is opened an ‘Ambience’ light guide around the doors and rear seat area welcomes the driver and passengers.

Benefits

Interior lighting gives a welcoming and luxurious feeling when unlocking and entering the car and this also makes it easier to see and find things in the dark.

‘Ambience’ Light Guide Around the Passenger Area

The Polestar 1 has an ‘Ambience’ light guide that runs around the doors and rear seat area. It is lit all the time, from the moment a door is opened until the trip is finished and the car is locked. This contributes to the warm feeling inside the car.

Interior – Driver’s Environment

STEERING WHEEL

The Polestar 1 has a sport steering wheel with a leather-clad rim. The steering wheel is designed for the best possible ergonomic experience when it comes to diameter, as well as thickness and design of the rim.

Adjustable Steering Wheel

The steering wheel is manually adjustable for height and reach, allowing for a tailored position for every driver’s personal preferences.

Heated Steering Wheel

The steering wheel is electrically heated (standard) making it more comfortable and safer to drive without gloves on cold days.

Steering Wheel Controls

Up to 14 functions can be controlled by the steering wheel buttons. This allows drivers to control many functions without letting go of the steering wheel.

UNIQUE DESIGN CONTROLS

Many of the controls the driver touches have unique metal finish, diamond patterned touch surfaces, like the central knob for starting and stopping of the powertrain, the large rotary volume control beneath the center display and the drive mode scroll wheel in the tunnel console. This provides an exclusive, uncompromising design that pleases both the eyes and fingers.

LIGHT CONTROLS

All light functions are controlled by the steering wheel stalk on the left, providing a safe and convenient way to control all light functions without having to let go of the steering wheel.

GEARSHIFT IN SWEDISH CRYSTAL

The gear selector is handcrafted in Swedish Orrefors crystal, offering a unique design solution. It features an etched Polestar emblem which appears to be floating in the crystal itself, and is lit from below.

PADDLE SHIFTERS

Paddle shifters for manual control of the automatic gearbox come standard. The paddle shifters give a sporty feel as well as quick and safe manual control of the automatic gearbox, without having to let go of the steering wheel.

SPORT PEDALS

Sport pedals in aluminum with rubber inserts are standard and prevent slipping.

17

ACCELERATOR

The accelerator is of the floor-hinged type, which supports the heel and is regarded as sportier.

FOOT REST

There is an ample-sized footrest to the left of the pedals, providing a comfortable experience with plenty of space to both rest the left foot during everyday driving, and a stable support for the left foot during dynamic driving.

REAR-VIEW MIRROR

The interior rear-view mirror is a true piece of Scandinavian design. The frameless mirror adds to the fresh and modern profile of the interior in contrast to more conventional cabins. Automatic dimming is standard, including for the frameless door mirrors, and an integrated compass is included. This provides safety and comfort with the dimming function of all rear- view mirrors.

ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL

When driving, the driver can select Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and set a speed via buttons on the steering wheel. ACC takes over the control of the accelerator and brakes to manage the set speed while also reacting to vehicles ahead. The speed can be adjusted via buttons on the steering wheel. The driver can disengage ACC via a button or by depressing the brake pedal. ACC can be overridden by depressing the accelerator. ACC will resume its function when the accelerator is released. When disengaged, the driver can press a resume button on the steering wheel. The set speed is shown in the driver display beneath the current speed of travel. This allows for a convenient and relaxing experience, particularly when driving long distances.

Interior – Front Seats

SPORT SEATS

The Polestar 1 has Sport seats with side bolsters that are very supportive, both in the seat cushions and backrests. The seats are power-operated including multi-directional lumbar support and seat cushion extension. The Sport seats are upholstered in Nappa leather with contrasting seams.

Benefits include optimized support during dynamic driving and a very dynamic look and feel.

Adjustable Cushion Extension with Side Support

The seat has power-operated cushion extensions. The design is unique, with side supports on either side. It is also heated. This provides excellent thigh support that is easy to adjust, and side support all the way from the shoulders to the thighs, even for long-legged people. The cushion extension is very wide, which is another unique feature, providing effective thigh support irrespective of leg position.

18

POWER-OPERATION

The front seats have eight-way electric adjustment. The controls are placed on the outside of the seat cushion – one in the shape of a seat cushion and one of a backrest. A third, multi- directional control, is used for the lumbar support adjustments. The driver can control the longitudinal and backrest positions of the front passenger seat via the driver’s seat controls as well, when activated via the center display.

Power-Operated Multi-Directional Lumbar Support

The power-operated lumbar support can also be adjusted vertically. The functions are graphically shown on the center display. Thanks to the vertical adjustment function, the lumbar support can meet the needs of a very wide range of passenger heights and personal preferences.

Button-Operated Memory

The power-operated Sport seats include two memory buttons each for the seat and door mirror settings. The memory also includes the settings for the lumbar support, cushion extension and head-up display, which are linked to the driver’s seat memory. The buttons are positioned on the front door panels. This makes it very convenient if more than one driver or front-seat passenger use the car regularly. The memory buttons are easier to use from the outside when the door is open than if they were positioned on the seat sides, as often seen in other vehicles. The buttons can easily be pressed before entering the car, which means the seat can adjust to the memorized position before the driver or passenger enters. This is particularly handy for tall people.

Remote Control Memory

A memory function for the driver’s seat, and the other settings mentioned under ‘button- operated memory,’ is integrated into each remote control. When the car has been unlocked with the remote control and the door is opened, the driver’s seat and door mirrors, as well as other equipment depending on specification, automatically adjust to the settings they had when that particular remote control was last used. (Two remote controls come standard and up to ten more can be ordered).

Seat Heating

Electrical front seat heating with individual three-level touch controls is standard. The adjustable cushion extension is also heated.

Head Restraints

The head restraints have a slim design, but still give very effective protection. The design contributes to the fresh interior feel. The angle and height of the head restraints cannot be adjusted. The head restraints are designed for the safest distance to the head and should not be altered.

Special Steel Frames

The seat frames are made of different steel grades to offer greater safety together with lower weight. This provides high levels of protective safety in the event of an accident, with crash energy-absorbing seat cushions.

19

Interior – Rear Seat

REAR SEAT

The Polestar 1 is a ‘2+2’ Coupé, which means that space for the driver and front passenger is prioritized, and that the rear seat is suitable for two children, youngsters or short adults. Just like the front seats, the rear seat cushions and backrests are shaped to offer great side support even during dynamic driving.

The two rear head-restraints are integrated into the backrests and hat shelf. This makes it possible to transport two children or youngsters in spite of the very dynamic coupé shape, and provides side support even during dynamic driving.

The integrated head restraints contribute to the dynamic coupé look.

Rear Seat Ingress/Egress

By pressing a button on the top part of the front seat backrest, the front seat moves forward for ingress to or egress from the rear seat. The very wide door openings facilitate ingress/egress. This makes ingress to and egress from the rear seat easy. Recommended maximum height for rear passengers is 4.8 feet (145 cm).

Interior – Convenience

FRONT CENTER ARMREST, STORAGE COMPARTMENTS AND CONNECTIONS

A center armrest with a storage compartment underneath is standard. In the front of the storage compartment are two USB ports. In front of the armrest is a very elegant divided blind in high gloss black, with an ingeniously designed divided pull/push handle. Under the large rear section of the blind are two cup holders, a storage compartment and a 12V-outlet. Under the smaller front section is a smaller storage compartment.

CUP HOLDERS

Cup holders are placed in the tunnel console between the driver and front seat passenger, giving the driver and front seat passenger the ability to have drinks nearby.

DOOR BINS

The door bins are very spacious, with room for a one-liter bottle in each bin, which is great for long trips.

NET POCKET

A net pocket is fitted to the tunnel on the front passenger side, which is convenient for the front seat passenger.

GLOVE COMPARTMENT

The glove compartment is roomy and has a lid with a handle on the left-hand side with a lock.

20

PASSENGER SIDE VANITY MIRROR

The passenger side sun visor has an integrated vanity mirror. The vanity mirror is not illuminated and a driver’s side vanity mirror is not available. The visors are fixed as a result of the design of the overhead console and the narrow width of the roof structure.

12V POWER OUTLET IN THE FRONT AND REAR

A 12-volt power outlet is fitted both in the front and rear parts of the cabin. The output power is 120 watts, making it very convenient to be able to drive and/or charge 12-volt appliances both in the front and rear.

Interior – Sensus

Our principle focus has been to make the interface feel as natural and intuitive as possible. The key to achieving that was to virtually eliminate buttons and switches and, instead, rely on touch screen technology for functions like climate control, entertainment and navigation. The user interface is focused around the large 9-inch touch screen on the dashboard, which is itself very clean and easy to use, thanks to the absence of switches and buttons. A further advantage of displaying ‘buttons’ on a screen is that they can be made to appear bigger, as the screen is dynamic – that makes it easier to control, for example, the climate control system.

Another feature that makes our system so transparent and easy to use is full voice control for functions such as climate control, navigation, media, and telephony. Even the owner’s manual can be accessed through voice – we have strived to make as many functions as possible work with voice control for convenience.

VISUALLY CONNECTED

The Polestar 1 has three different ways to communicate visually with the driver. When it comes to priorities, information that the driver needs ‘now’ is displayed on the windshield by means of a head-up display, information that can be referenced ‘later’ is displayed on the central driver display, and information that can be taken care of ‘whenever’ is handled by the center display in the center console. This provides an easy and convenient way of getting information while driving, according to priority.

HEAD-UP DISPLAY

A head-up display is standard-fitted in the Polestar 1. This means that text and graphical information can be displayed on the lower part of the windshield, in front of the driver. Our head-up technology has made it possible for the driver to experience the information as if it were hovering in the air about 6 feet/2 meters in front of the car. The messages are semi- transparent and do not block the driver’s vision. The brightness is automatically adapted to the surrounding light. The driver can adjust the brightness and image position, as well as make personal settings. The image position is included in the memory function for the power- operated seat.

Benefits include: ● No risk that the driver misses important information ● An extremely convenient way to get information from the navigation system ● Less strain on the eyes, as there is no need to change focus from the road ahead or to look down.

21

● There is a possibility to adjust the head-up information to personal preferences, manually or automatically.

DRIVER DISPLAY

The 12.3-inch driver display is digital and uses the latest technology. When the ignition is off, the display is black. When the ignition is switched on, the driver display comes alive. The resolution is high and, thanks to advanced technology, even the front seat passenger has a clear view of the display. The driver can choose between two different visual appearances, both with great color depth and color variations. Light sensors control the brightness of the display according to exterior light sources, such as sunshine through any of the windows. The display also adapts to dark exterior conditions, such as tunnels or night time. When activated in dark conditions, the driver can also control the brightness manually.

The display shows two large round instruments and an information display in between. The information display can differ in size, depending on use. For example, if the navigation system is used, it becomes bigger, and the two round instruments smaller. The driver can choose between two different display modes – Polestar and Minimalistic.

Benefits include: ● A very exclusive and high-tech impression when the ignition is turned on and the driver display comes alive. ● Safety and security, thanks to the clear information in the driver display, which can also be seen by the front seat passenger ● A choice between different looks and color schemes, which contributes to a bespoke driving experience. ● Comfortable and restful for the eyes, as the brightness is automatically adapted to the surrounding light.

CENTER DISPLAY

The display in the center console is an example of uncompromising design, with form and function combined. It really makes the Polestar 1 stand out from its competitors. The display is angled slightly towards the driver.

9-inch Portrait Format Touch Screen

The impressively large 9-inch touch screen is unusual in having a vertical ‘portrait’ format. It is placed as high as possible in the center console. The upper part is mainly used for information that needs to be viewed and the lower part for touch functions – the best possible ergonomic solution.

Larger Area

The traditionally communicated diagonal measurement, like the 9 inches mentioned above, can be deceiving. The area is a better measurement of a screen. The Polestar ‘9-inch screen’ has an area that, for example, is 14% larger than a comparable 12.3-inch screen. This means that information on the upper part of the large and high-mounted screen is easy and safe to view, without diverting unnecessary attention from the road ahead. The touch screen’s large display allows for bigger virtual buttons, which are placed on the lower part of the screen for easy reach. Viewing and following routes in the navigation section is particularly easy as the vertical screen can display more of the road that the car is traveling on. Compared with horizontal landscape format screens in most vehicles, it is also easier to view menus with less need for scrolling. The slightly angled center display adds to the cabin’s driver-oriented look and functionality.

22

Glossy and Anti-Reflective

The center screen is glossy, yet keeps reflections and glare to a minimum thanks to the LCF (Light Control Film) anti-reflective coating. LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) technology delivers a very high definition viewing experience. This provides an exclusive look thanks to the very glossy screen surface, which is a standout feature, and a very clear image thanks to LCD technology combined with the special anti-reflective coating.

Choice of Themes

Just as with the driver display, the look of the center display can be changed by the driver. There is a choice of two themes – Polestar and Minimalistic.

Highly Advanced Touch Technology

The touchscreen uses highly advanced touch technology. An infrared film means the finger barely needs to touch the screen, as opposed to older technologies where the finger needs to apply pressure on the screen, which often flexes with the pressure. The screen can sense a finger, even if it is gloved. ‘Capacitive touch’ is another technology that can be used with a glass screen, but it cannot be used with gloves.

Some commands can be performed just by swiping a hand or fingers across the screen. The large virtual buttons on the screen can be rearranged according to personal preferences.

STEERING WHEEL CONTROLS

Several functions can be controlled via buttons on the steering wheel spokes. On the left- hand spoke, function-related systems – Adaptive Cruise Control, Cruise Control, Speed Limiter and Pilot Assist. On the right-hand spoke, entertainment-related functions like audio, phone, connectivity and navigation, as well as menus from a dedicated menu button with the information visible right in front of the driver on the driver display. There are four scrolling buttons and a selection button in the middle.

VOICE CONTROL

In addition to the easy-to-use touch screen and steering wheel controls, many functions can be controlled by voice command. The Polestar 1 recognizes voice commands for climate control, navigation, media, telephone and even for the digital owner’s manual. This means the driver can keep his/her eyes on the road and hands on the steering wheel. Natural Speech means you can speak to the car naturally as you would to a person – you don’t have to repeat a set list of prompts. Voice Control is activated by the button on the top left of the right-hand steering wheel spoke.

Interior – Audio

BOWERS & WILKINS

For the Polestar 1 we have settled for nothing less than one of the best audio systems on the market. It has been specifically developed together with renowned high-end audio manufacturer Bowers & Wilkins. Their name carries such great authority and respect in audio circles that we have decided to partner with them to reach new levels when it comes to in-car

23

audio. For this top performing sound system, we also developed a new type of subwoofer, which has been integrated into the vehicle architecture itself.

The system features the unique ‘Room Transformation’ technology that has been developed together with the Swedish audio software specialists Dirac Research. This technology has made it possible to recreate the acoustics of a specific room inside the car. There are three different ‘Room Modes,’ which is a unique feature. The modes are ‘Studio,’ ‘Individual Stage’ and ‘Gothenburg Concert Hall,’ which has an acoustic design recreating the unique acoustic experience of the Gothenburg (Sweden) Concert Hall.

The Bowers & Wilkins audio system delivers an astonishing 1,400 watts to 17 speakers. The Bowers & Wilkins Sound System audio includes the large, 9-inch center touch screen and steering wheel controls with a volume knob. The audio system is compatible with the following audio files: MP3, AAC, WMA, WAV and FLAC.

The focus of our audio development team has been, ‘we believe in music. It’s all about soul, not just measurements.’ We have spent a vast amount of time and effort to design all our audio systems to deliver the best possible top performing sound quality in the Polestar 1.

The tweeter panels in the doors, rear sides and on the dashboard are in stainless steel with Bowers & Wilkins logotypes. The front door and rear speaker panels are in stainless steel and the signature Bowers & Wilkins yellow speaker cone is illuminated and can be seen through the mesh.

Speakers

Dashboard: ● One tweeter (1.0 inch) (25 mm) ● One mid-range speaker with a Kevlar cone (3.9 inches) (100mm) In each of the front doors: ● One tweeter (1.0 inch) (25 mm) ● One mid-range speaker with a Kevlar cone (3.9 inches) (100mm) ● One woofer (6.7 inches) (170 mm) In each of the rear sides: ● One tweeter (1.0 inch) (25 mm) ● One woofer (6.5 inches) (165 mm) In the hat shelf: ● Two tweeters (1.0 inch) (25 mm) ● Two mid-range speakers (3.9 inches) (100mm) with a Kevlar cone Hidden in the rear left side of the car: ● One subwoofer (9.8 inches) (250 mm)

This provides a sound experience in its own class, with true high-end in-car audio performance, the unique feature of three different room modes, a chassis-integrated subwoofer and speaker panels – material, logotypes and visible yellow speaker cones – that give a unique, very exclusive impression both from the inside and outside through the windows.

UNIQUE SUBWOOFER

This is a very unusual subwoofer in that it is not enclosed in the car. It has a 9.8-inch (250 mm) cone made partly of carbon fiber and is extremely compact and lightweight. The placement is unique – it is mounted by the rear wheel housing with an opening in it. This means the subwoofer can pulse more air, which enables extremely low bass tones (down to 20 Hz). This provides an unequalled bass tone experience in a series production car.

24

The phone functions, as well as the maps and music apps, can be handled via voice commands and the messaging service can only be used with voice control. Messages will not be displayed on the car’s screen.

The iPhone is connected to the car via an iPhone charging cable and a USB port. The USB port is placed in the storage compartment under the front center armrest, where the iPhone can also be stored.

The standard Apple apps are: Phone, Messages, Music and Maps. Some examples of third- party apps approved by Apple are: Pandora, Spotify, Waze and Audiobooks.

Apple CarPlay has limited functionality for markets without ‘Siri’ support.

For more information please see: http://www.apple.com/ios/carplay/

Benefits

This provides extremely convenient use of an iPhone via voice commands and the car’s large touch screen, without the need to handle the iPhone itself. Apple CarPlay does not cover the entire screen, so other information is always visible above, without the need to touch the screen to change view. The cable connection means that the iPhone’s battery is not being drained and, in addition, is charged if needed, and that the music quality is higher than it would be with a Bluetooth connection.

Android Auto

Android Auto is standard. It makes it possible to access an Android smartphone (5.0 Lollipop or higher) via the car’s central touch screen and voice commands using Google Assistant speech technology.

26

The Android phone is connected to the car via a charging cable and a USB port placed in the storage compartment under the front center armrest, where the phone can also be stored. Android Auto uses Google services like Google Maps and Google Play. Some examples of third-party apps are: Spotify, Skype, Pandora Radio, Stitcher Radio and TuneIn Radio.

For more information please see: https://www.android.com/auto/

Benefits

This allows for extremely convenient use of an Android smartphone via voice commands and the car’s large touch screen, without the need to handle the phone itself. Android Auto does not cover the entire screen, as other information is always visible above, without the need to touch the screen to change view. The cable connection means that the phone’s battery is not being drained and, in addition, is charged if needed, and that the music quality is higher than it would be with a Bluetooth connection.

Interior – Climate

Our climate systems are tested in the coldest as well as the warmest climates on earth. The interior climate is a main factor for well-being for everybody in the car, but also for safety as the driver can always achieve the desired temperature and air circulation to keep fresh and alert.

Touch Screen Control

The driver and front seat passenger can control the climate system via the centrally mounted touch screen. The climate system symbol, front seat heating symbols and the left- and right- hand side temperature settings are always clearly visible in the lower part of the screen. As soon as the climate system symbol is touched, all climate symbols and touch controls are displayed on the large screen.

Temperature Settings

If a temperature figure is touched, the temperature settings are immediately displayed on the full side of the left- or right-hand side of the screen, respectively. By pressing a synchronization symbol, the driver can get the same temperature in the entire car, as on the driver’s side. This makes it easy and safe to change the temperature setting when driving.

Automatic Fan Speed Settings

The fan speed is governed fully automatically. If the driver, however, would like a raise or lower automatic fan speed range, there are five automatic fan speed ranges to choose between via the touch screen. The default automatic fan speed range is the middle setting. This makes it possible to tailor the automatic fan speed range to personal preferences or to the circumstances.

Mannequin Air Distribution Control

The air distribution control is ingeniously designed as a human body on the center touch screen. In addition to the mannequin symbol, three graphical fields for the airflow are displayed. To get air to the windshield, the upper field is pressed, for example.

27

This makes it extremely easy to adjust the air distribution manually, thanks to the clever mannequin control. Automatic air distribution can be easily restored by tapping the ‘Auto’ button.

Unique Dashboard Air Vents

The dashboard air vents have a very special look and feel. The vertical central strip, as well as the control knobs, have a metal finish. The knobs have a diamond-shaped surface, similar to some of the other control knobs in the driver’s area. The vents are surrounded by silk metal trim.

Cooled Glove Compartment

The glove compartment is connected to the air-conditioning unit via a vent that can be opened or closed, so drinks or other items can be kept cool.

CABIN FILTER

A very efficient cabin filter is fitted in the climate system, ensuring that air coming into the cabin has reduced levels of dust, pollen and other particles, even of extremely fine sizes.

CLEANZONE

CleanZone includes technologies that offer the driver a better interior environment, like incoming air, interior emissions, odors and requirements regarding interior surfaces. CleanZone offers innovative solutions for enhanced well-being and health. A CleanZone logotype is visible in the center display. The color of the logotype changes from blue to grey if the interior air quality deteriorates, for example if a window is opened in heavy traffic.

Interior Air Quality System

The Interior Air Quality System has a sensor that measures the quality of the air coming into the passenger compartment. If it detects harmful substances it shuts off all incoming air by activating the recirculation system. To allow airflow to resume, it automatically turns recirculation off when it is not needed, or after a period of time depending on circumstances. In heavily polluted areas, the recirculation will be automatically turned on and off continuously. When the recirculation is off, all air that enters the passenger compartment passes through a multi-filter with unique specifications. It reduces the level of dust, pollen and other particles very efficiently. Thanks to a layer of active charcoal, it also filters out harmful substances in the air such as exhaust gas particles. It also reduces chemical odors, for example, from the windshield washer fluid.

The Interior Air Quality System is on by default, but can be manually disconnected via the touch screen, which means the automatic recirculation is turned off but the air is still directed through the multi filter. The recirculation can then be activated manually when desired so the air inside the car can often be cleaner than the air outside in heavy traffic or heavily polluted areas. There is no need to decide when the recirculation should be turned on. Manual systems can often be left on too long, or not used often enough – no such concerns with our automatic system.

Also, there is no risk that you’ll forget to turn the recirculation off, which is easily done with a manual system. If it is forgotten, no fresh air enters the cabin, leading to drowsiness and misted-up windows.

28

Boot/Trunk

POWER-OPERATED BOOT/TRUNK LID

The boot/trunk lid is power-operated. Opening can be activated by a button on the remote control, a button on the left side of the dashboard, or the hands-free opening function. The lid is closed manually.

Unlocking only the boot/trunk lid

The boot/trunk lid can be unlocked by a separate button on the remote control without the doors also being unlocked. This offers security, as it is possible to access the luggage compartment while nobody can open any of the doors from the outside.

Hands-Free Opening of the Power-Operated Boot/Trunk Lid

The boot/trunk lid has a comfort opening function. It uses a sensor under the left side of the rear bumper. When a foot is moved under that part of the car, the boot/trunk lid will open. This allows for convenient opening, particularly when carrying loads or suitcases or when loading bulky items.

UNIQUE BOOT/TRUNK EXPERIENCE

A unique experience awaits the person that opens the boot/trunk lid or stands by watching. To indicate the very advanced electrical technology of the Polestar 1, orange-colored high- voltage circuitry is exposed behind a large window covering the entire inner wall. The window is made with a special type of Plexiglas, which is as scratch-resistant as glass. This provides a reminder of the advanced electrical technology in the Polestar 1 every time the boot/trunk lid is opened.

TRIPLE BATTERIES FOR MAXIMUM POWER AND RANGE

To offer the greatest possible power and range in ‘Pure’ (electric) mode, the Polestar 1 has three battery packs. In addition to the longitudinally mounted battery under the center tunnel console, two batteries of the same size are mounted transversely between the rear seat and the boot/trunk. As this encroaches upon the boot/trunk depth, and makes it impossible to have folding rear backrests and/or a through-loading hatch, it is important to know that this is not the only battery pack in the Polestar 1. The combination of the centrally mounted and the rear mounted battery packs not only offers the greatest possible power and range, but also a perfect weight distribution (which would not have been the case with only a rear-mounted battery).

EXPOSED CARBON FIBER

When the boot/trunk lid is opened, a structure of exposed carbon fiber can be seen on the inside. Apart from the lower front and rear parts in exposed carbon fiber, this is the only place that structural carbon fiber can be seen in the car.

The luggage compartment mat is of the same exclusive design as the interior mats. The perforated leather binding allows for a premium experience even when the boot/trunk lid is opened.

29

LOAD SECURING EYELETS

Two load-securing eyelets are fitted in the luggage compartment. When not in use they can be folded in. This offers extra safety as it is possible to secure a wide variety of cargo.

12V OUTLET

There is a 12V outlet in the boot/trunk making it possible to use 12V driven appliances, like a cooler box in the luggage compartment.

TIRE REPAIR KIT AND ADDITIONAL HIDDEN STORAGE SPACE

A tire repair kit comes standard behind the wall on the left side of the luggage compartment. The lower weight without a spare wheel contributes to lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

BATTERY

The 12V battery is hidden on the left side under the boot/trunk. There is no need for the owner to access the battery. A positive terminal is available in the engine compartment, which can be used to connect a jump-start cable or a battery charger. It is clearly marked in red and very easy to see and access.

WARNING TRIANGLE

The warning triangle is fitted on the inside of the boot/trunk lid in its own case, making it extremely easy to locate and access, even with the boot/trunk filled with luggage, which can be crucial in an emergency situation.

BOOT/TRUNK VOLUME

The maximum boot/trunk volume is approximately 4.41 cubic feet (126 liters) VDA* with the charge cable storage bag fitted. Maximum capacity without the charge cable storage bag is 5.05 cubic feet (143 liters) VDA*. This provides reasonable luggage space for a Coupé, particularly with plug-in hybrid technology and the battery capacity of the Polestar 1.

*VDA is the most common load volume spec used in Europe.

Security

LOCKING/UNLOCKING

The remote-controlled central locking operates the doors, boot/trunk lid and glove compartment locks. A flashing LED on the dashboard indicates that the car is locked and can deter would-be thieves. This offers security and the luggage compartment can be accessed without the risk of somebody opening a door from the outside.

INTERIOR LOCKING BUTTONS

The car can be locked and unlocked by buttons on the inside of the front doors with the status indicated by an LED close to the button.

30

WELCOME LIGHTING

When the car is unlocked with the remote control (within about 65.6 feet [20 m]), the headlights, rear lights, interior lighting and ground lighting in the door handles are turned on. This provides security as it is possible to see if somebody is lurking in or beside the car when it is dark.

HOME-SAFE LIGHT

The headlights can be turned on for 30 seconds upon leaving the car by pulling the left steering wheel stalk once. A longer duration of 60 or 90 seconds can be set in the menu system. This offers security and convenience, as it is possible to see the area in front of the car in unlit areas.

PANIC ALARM

A panic alarm, which can be activated from the remote control, is standard. When the button marked with a triangle on the side of the remote control is pressed, the car’s horn and hazard lights are activated and the welcome light and interior lighting are turned on. (To avoid false alarms, the button must be pressed for at least three seconds or twice within three seconds). This provides maximum security outside the car, thanks to the ability to attract attention if a threat occurs. The panic alarm can also be activated from the remote control when inside the car.

LAMINATED SIDE WINDOWS AND PANORAMIC ROOF

The door windows and the panoramic roof have laminated glass. Laminated glass is two sheets of glass bonded together with a laminated layer of plastic foil in between. (All cars have laminated windshields for safety reasons.) This practically eliminates the risk for break- ins through the windows or the panoramic roof, as the plastic layer helps the glass stay in place. It takes at least ten times longer to penetrate compared with traditional tempered glass. Even if broken, it is virtually impossible to penetrate.

IMMOBILIZER

The car is standard-fitted with an immobilizer, an electronic device that communicates with the car’s remote control and makes it impossible to start the engine if there is no remote control inside the car.

ALARM SYSTEM

An alarm system is factory-fitted as standard. The alarm is connected to the doors, bonnet/hood and boot/trunk lid. It is automatically turned on when the car is locked and off when it is unlocked. When the alarm is activated, the alarm’s horn sounds, the hazard lights are activated (in intervals of five minutes) and the interior lighting is turned on. Double locking is included in the alarm option in some markets. This gives drivers peace of mind knowing that Polestar’s factory-fitted alarm system offers maximum security and has a dedicated horn and battery.

The alarm horn sounds in intervals together with the car’s horn. If somebody would manage to disconnect the car’s battery, the alarm horn will still sound as it has its own battery. The alarm horn and its battery are practically impossible to access.

31

Private Locking

A private locking function is included in the alarm option. It can be activated via the central touch screen by setting a PIN code. It locks the boot/ trunk lid and makes it impossible to unlock with the remote control, interior release button or comfort access feature. The function also locks the folding mechanism for both parts of the rear seat. When activated, the boot/trunk can only be opened by first entering the PIN code on the central touch screen.

The glove box can be locked with a mechanical key that is delivered with the car. This means the car can be double-locked and left with a valet service without giving them access to the boot/trunk and glove compartment.

PRE-VENTILATION AND POST CLIMATIZATION

This feature includes the two functions below:

Pre-Ventilation

The climate system fan can be started remotely via the Polestar app, or from inside the car via the center touch screen. The function is active up to 40 minutes. The ventilation system keeps the cabin comfortable and environmentally friendly while sitting in the car without starting the engine.

Post Climatization

The climate system and engine coolant pump can be started via the center touch screen to keep the set cabin temperature after the car has been stopped and the engine turned off. If it is cold outside, continued heating of the cabin is dependent on the engine temperature. The ventilation of the cabin is done with outside air. The function is active for 15 minutes, or less if the car is locked from the outside. Having a set temperature keeps the cabin comfortable and environmentally friendly, or as close as possible (depending on engine temperature) when the car has been stopped and the engine turned off.

AIR-CONDITIONING REMOTE START

With the Polestar app, the engine and air-conditioning can be started remotely, via a smartphone and the Polestar app.

Safety

The Polestar 1 is delivered with a very high level of safety, both protective and preventive. This is made possible because the Polestar 1 has a huge capacity to process data regarding its own trajectory and that of other cars around it. It can predict imminent collisions, warn the driver of such danger and finally, intervene with brake and steering input to mitigate or avoid collisions entirely.

The safety solutions in the Polestar 1 are like a co-pilot who’s always there, looking out for dangers and ready to intervene if necessary. As the driver, you don’t have to switch on or activate anything.

32

Safety – Preventive Safety

DRIVING STABILITY AND TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEMS

Different systems aid the driver to keep the car stable, without skidding or spinning wheels. The main systems are Electronic Stability Control, Traction Control and Spin Control.

ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL

Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is a name for all ‘stability’ functions, not a function in itself.

Active Yaw Control

This is the main function of Electronic Stability Control. Yaw means the car’s turning around its center point/axis. The yaw angle changes if the car starts to skid. Active Yaw Control senses yaw angle changes/skidding by two types of sensors – one that senses in which direction the car is heading and one that recognizes the direction the driver wants the car to be heading by assessing the steering wheel angle. The system compares the two values and if it calculates the car starting to skid, it brakes one or more wheels to bring it back to the direction the driver wants in the direction the steering wheel is turned.

Benefit

This minimizes the risk of skids at all speeds and under all circumstances.

Understeer Control Logic

Understeer Control Logic reduces understeer (the car’s tendency to push straight ahead in curves).

Benefit: This makes the drive more fun with safer cornering characteristics, thanks to the minimizing of understeer.

Advanced Stability Control

Our Electronic Stability Control system includes a subsystem called Advanced Stability Control. In addition to the sensors of Active Yaw Control, Advanced Stability Control senses the car’s roll movement and lateral acceleration, which means there is even less of a risk of loss of traction when cornering with low and slowly increasing lateral forces, intentionally or unintentionally.

Driver Steering Recommendation

When braking in conditions where the friction is lower on one side of the car than on the other, there is a risk that the car turns/slides. In order to avoid this, the car informs the driver in good time in which direction to counter-steer to avoid a slide by auto-steering slightly in that direction.

Benefits

This lessens the risk for skidding when braking on surfaces with different friction on one side of the car than on the other

33

Sport ESC

The Sport ESC mode is for advanced, dynamic driving and allows some degree of slip and slide. The Sport ESC mode is chosen by pressing ‘ESC Off’ on the center touch screen, in which case an ‘ESC Off’ warning lamp and a symbol of a sliding car warn the driver. Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is, however, never completely disconnected and it always checks the situation and takes over if it senses that a dangerous situation could develop. If Sport ESC mode has been used and the engine is turned off, it will always be disconnected when the engine is started.

Benefits

This means that there is a possibility for drivers to take more control and responsibility themselves when driving dynamically.

Dynamic Torque Vectoring

This advanced function improves the car’s lateral behavior by optimally utilizing the stability reserves. This is particularly noticeable during dynamic steering inputs.

The Polestar 1 utilizes torque vectoring both between the front wheels and between the rear wheels.

Benefits include: agile steering characteristics with quick reactions to steering inputs, the car goes in the direction the driver wants even during hard cornering and optimal cornering traction, and stability together with the torque vectoring between the rear wheels.

TRACTION CONTROL

All cars have a differential between the driving wheels. It distributes the engine power to the driving wheels on both sides, irrespective of if the car is going straight ahead or turning, in which case the outer wheel travels a longer distance than the inner. The drawback with the differential is that if one of the driving wheels loses traction, the differential supplies power to that wheel, up to the point where no power is supplied to the wheel with grip, which renders the car stationary. The traditional solution to this problem is a differential lock or a differential brake, that ‘senses’ the wheel spin mechanically and brakes the spinning wheel at the differential side of the half shaft (the axle between the wheel and differential).

The Traction Control system also brakes the spinning wheel but at the other end of the half shaft by the brake. It receives information about a spinning driving wheel electronically from the anti-lock brake (ABS) sensors, which constantly monitor the rotation of each wheel. The Traction Control system is mainly designed to prevent wheel spin at takeoff and at lower speeds.

Benefits

The electronic Traction Control practically eliminates the risk of wheel spin on the driving wheels during takeoff and at lower speeds, which eventually could cause the car to lose traction completely in slippery conditions.

Corner Traction Control by Torque Vectoring

As the name implies, Corner Traction Control is Traction Control during cornering. Torque Vectoring uses the ABS sensors’ information about the rotational speed of the driving wheels

34

and makes Corner Traction Control offer the same benefits as a mechanical differential brake at higher speeds and dynamic cornering.

During fast cornering, the car’s rolling can lead to the inner wheel losing traction. If it starts to spin, the differential transfers the engine power to that wheel and the outer wheel with grip loses power. Cornering Traction Control solves this by braking the spinning wheel. This means that Corner Traction Control also reduces understeer (the car’s tendency to go straight ahead when the driver turns the steering wheel) when cornering at higher speeds. Benefits include power without wheel spin, for example, when accelerating onto a motorway from a slip road, and a good driving experience thanks to less wheel spin and more power when cornering at higher speeds.

SPIN CONTROL

In addition to Traction Control with brake intervention, wheel spin on the driving wheels can also be limited by Spin Control reducing the engine power/torque. Spin Control also utilizes the ABS sensors, which monitor each wheel’s rotation. If one of the driving wheels is detected to have a considerably higher rotational speed than the others or if both front wheels or both rear wheels are rotating quicker than the pair on the ‘other axle’, the engine power/torque is instantly reduced, in order for the spinning driving wheel/wheels to slow down and retain grip.

At speeds when Traction Control is active, it works together with Stability Control.

Spin Control can be turned off if desired by pressing ‘ESC Off’ on the center touch screen during dynamic driving or in special situations, like if the car is stuck in mud or snow. In this case, an ‘ESC Off’ warning lamp and a symbol of a sliding car warn the driver. This reduces the risk of the driving wheels losing traction at all speeds.

Engine Drag Control

When the driver releases the accelerator or changes down in slippery conditions, there is a risk that the driving wheels lose traction. If Engine Drag Control senses slip at any of the driving wheels, engine power/torque is momentarily increased to prevent any wheel slip.

Benefits

This practically eliminates the risk that any of the driving wheels lose traction during engine braking, or when changing gears manually in slippery conditions.

LANE KEEPING AID

This standard system helps the driver keep the car in its lane by gently steering the car back if it is about to cross a lane marking, if it senses that the driver is not driving ‘actively’ and, for example, not using the indicator. If the steering intervention is not enough, or if the driver steers into the other lane, he/she is warned by vibrations in the steering wheel (‘haptic warning’). The driver can choose to have only steering intervention (without haptic warning) or only haptic warning (without steering intervention), or both via the center display. The system uses the camera in the windshield, is dependent on visible lane markings and is active at speeds from 40 to 124 mph (65 to 200 km/h).

Benefits include preventive safety as the system actively aids the driver by steering the car back if it is straying towards another lane because the driver has lost concentration or for some other reason is not in control.

35

Run-Off Road Mitigation

This is a standard-fitted preventive safety system which supplements the standard Lane Keeping Aid. Run-Off Road Mitigation is an emergency system which only intervenes if a road departure is calculated to be imminent. The calculation is based on information from the standard radar/camera unit in the windshield and relies on visible road markings and road edges. The system is active from 40 to 87 mph (65 to 140 km/h), day and night.

The system intervenes by helping the driver steer the car on a path that will reduce the risk of a road departure. If this is not enough, it also intervenes by braking to reduce the speed. The driver can override the steering aid anytime.

Should a road departure be unavoidable, our Run-Off Road protection solutions, which include energy-absorbing front seat cushions and prepared front safety belts, protect the driver and front seat passenger. This reduces the risk for road departures.

ONCOMING LANE MITIGATION

This standard system helps the driver to avoid collisions with oncoming vehicles by automatic steering. If the car drifts over a lane marking, heading into the path of an oncoming vehicle and the driver takes no action, this system helps the driver steer the car back. The driver gets an audible warning signal at the same time as the car starts to steer back. A message is shown in the driver display after the steering intervention has been completed. The driver can override the automatic steering anytime.

The system is active at speeds from 37 to 87 mph (60 to 140 km/h). It needs a visible lane marking and detects oncoming four-wheeled vehicles. This reduces the risk of a collision if the car drifts over a lane marking into the path of an oncoming vehicle.

DRIVER ALERT CONTROL

Distraction, lack of concentration or falling asleep are major reasons for accidents. Because of this, Driver Alert Control was introduced. The system keeps track of the car’s path in relation to lane markings on either side from the camera in the windshield. If the system detects that the car is driven in an abnormal way, the driver gets an alert via an audible signal as well as a text message and a coffee cup symbol in the driver display, indicating it is time to take a break. In addition, the driver also gets guidance to the next place to take the break (when enabled). This system can be deactivated.

Benefits include a reduced risk for accidents caused by driver fatigue and the coffee cup symbol is a nice and friendly way of getting the message.

ROAD SIGN INFORMATION

Road signs the driver is about to pass are displayed in the lower part of the speedometer and in the head-up display when activated. The system can display European and US speed limit signs – including variable speed limit signs – and supplemental sign information, as well as some of the more important European prohibition signs.

The driver can activate/deactivate a speeding alert in the menu system and include a desired offset speed to the detected speed limit. If the speeding alert is activated and the driver exceeds the limit and the chosen offset, a speed limit sign icon will flash in the speedometer. An audio warning can also be enabled.

36

Information about speed cameras is automatically activated when Road Sign Information is activated. When approaching a known speed camera, a visual and/or audio warning will be experienced along with the speed limit and distance to the camera.

Speed-related information is fetched from the navigation unit in the following cases: when passing indirect speed limit signs such as highway, motorway and city signs; if a previously detected sign is judged not to be valid anymore and no new sign has been passed; if the driver passes a no-entry sign and the navigation system recognizes that the car is traveling in the wrong direction on a one-way street, a no-entry sign icon will flash; if the driver passes two no-entry signs, one on either side of the street, (without any support from the navigation system) a no-entry sign icon will flash.

The driver can activate a warning sound for the no-entry warning and speeding alert (disengaged by default).

Benefits include: information about road signs even if the driver fails to notice them; reminder of road signs even if the driver noticed them earlier; less risk of accidents and speeding tickets as the driver is warned about speeding and also can be warned about speed cameras if he/she chooses; less risk of accidents and tickets as the driver is warned about driving into one-way streets in the wrong direction.

SPEED LIMITER

This function makes the car not exceed a speed set by the driver or set automatically with information from the Road Sign Information system. The driver can exceed the set limit by depressing the accelerator fully for a moment and then choose to drive above the set speed. When the speed falls below the set speed, the Speed Limiter will resume its function. The set speed is shown in the driver display.

Benefits

This helps the driver not exceed speed limits or a maximum speed set for some other reason. It is also convenient to let the car automatically set the maximum speed according to the current speed limit signs.

AUTOMATIC BRAKING AFTER A COLLISION

After a collision when the safety belt pretensioners and/or one or more airbags have been deployed, and/or a collision with a large animal is detected, the brakes are automatically activated. This lessens the risk for more damage after a collision, like the car hitting other cars, obstacles or pedestrians.

INDIRECT TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM

This system monitors the tire pressure in each tire. If the tire pressure is too low, the driver is informed which tire is affected in the driver display.

Benefits

This lessens the risk for accidents caused by low tire pressure or a puncture. Indirect Tire Pressure Monitoring System comes standard.

37

How It Works

This is a new type of tire pressure monitoring system, which uses the car’s anti-lock brake system (ABS) sensors to calculate the tire pressure.

REAR COLLISION WARNING

If a vehicle is approaching from behind and the system calculates there is a risk of a collision, it flashes all indicators at a higher rate than the regular indicator/ hazard warning light rate, to try to catch the attention of the driver of the approaching vehicle. (The hazard warning indicator light inside the car is not activated.) The function above is market- dependent. If the system calculates that a vehicle is about to hit it from behind, the system tensions the safety belts just before the collision. If the car is at a standstill, the system also activates full auto- braking.

Benefits

The warning provides preventive safety for the driver and passengers, as well as for the driver and passengers in the vehicle that is fast approaching from behind. The tightened front safety belts also provide protective safety, particularly against whiplash injuries.

CROSS TRAFFIC ALERT WITH AUTOBRAKE

If reversing out of a parking space or anywhere else with restricted vision to the rear left and right sides, the radar units inside each corner of the rear bumper detect vehicles approaching at a distance of up to 98.4 feet (30 m). The system can also warn of cyclists and pedestrians at shorter distances. The driver is warned by an audible warning from the left or right rear loudspeaker and by a graphic warning on the center display.

If the driver should continue reversing in spite of the warnings and a collision is imminent, the car automatically brakes.

Benefits

The alert makes it considerably easier and less stressful to reverse out of parking spaces, and minimizes risk for collisions, even if the driver does not act on the warnings. This also provides protective safety for the people in the car as well as in approaching vehicles, and for cyclists and pedestrians.

BLISTM BLIND SPOT INFORMATION

The BLISTM blind spot information system uses one radar unit inside either corner of the rear bumper to detect and measure the distance to vehicles coming from behind an adjacent lane. The system covers an area from the door mirrors to a distance of 21.3 feet (6.5 m) behind the rear of the car, by the width of a lane, on either side of the car. The system gives a visual warning if a vehicle is about to pass on the left or right-hand side. The warning is delivered by a light in the outer side of the door mirror glass. The warning light is normally constantly lit. If, however, the driver turns on the indicator to the side where a vehicle is in the blind spot information zone, the warning light starts to flash. Blind spot information also warns of vehicles approaching rapidly from behind in the lanes to the left or right of the car, at a distance of up to 229.7 feet (70 meters). The driver is warned by a constant light in the door mirror glass. If the driver ignores the warning light and turns on the indicator, in order to

38

change lanes, the warning light starts to flash. The system is always active at speeds above 8 mph (12 km/h). It can, however, be turned off in the menu system.

The curved marking in the upper left-hand corner is the warning light area.

Benefits

Preventive safety, as blind spot information reduces the risk of the driver changing lanes when a car is about to overtake, or is actually overtaking. In addition to the blind spot warning, this feature helps the driver avoid severe collisions with cars rapidly approaching from behind. The system helps the driver to judge how quickly a vehicle behind can approach, which is very difficult to judge just by looking in the rear-view mirror.

Prepared Front Safety Belts

Prepared front safety belts, or electrically reversible retractor belts, can automatically tighten the front safety belts in different situations, which may be followed by a collision, for example with a vehicle or a large animal, or an accident such as the car running off the road into rough terrain, into a ditch or going airborne. The Polestar 1 is also standard-fitted with safety belt pre-tensioners, which create tension for the safety belts in different types of accidents.

Benefits

This lessens the risk for injuries in most types of collisions and accidents, as the body is kept in a safe position in the seat before a collision or accident occurs.

INTELLISAFE ASSIST

The IntelliSafe Assist includes the following feature:

ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL

This is Cruise Control with the added function that speed is adapted to vehicles in front of the driver. If a vehicle in front slows down and/or stops, Adaptive Cruise Control will make the car follow the vehicle and stop behind, and then keep the brakes engaged. If the car in front stops for less than three seconds, the car starts following the car in front as it takes off again.

The driver can choose between five different time gaps to vehicles in front, via buttons on the steering wheel and graphics in the driver display. Other functions and controls are the same as for Cruise Control. The driver can choose to turn the adaptive function off, and continue with regular Cruise Control (a function sometimes called ‘toggling possibility’). The system uses the radar and camera unit in the windshield.

When the car is adapting the speed to a vehicle in front above 43 mph (70 km/h), and the driver wants to overtake the vehicle and turns the indicator on, Adaptive Cruise Control briefly accelerates the car toward the vehicle in front.

Benefits

Adaptive cruise control provides a convenient, relaxing and safe experience since the driver does not need to constantly adapt the speed to vehicles in front, and assists even when overtaking.

39

Pilot Assist

Adaptive Cruise Control is supplemented by Pilot Assist. This means the car not only helps to keep the set speed and distance to a vehicle in front, but also supports the driver in keeping the car in the center of the lane with light, precise steering adjustments, even if there is no car in front. This is achieved with input from the camera and radar in the windshield, which monitor the car’s position in relation to visible lane markings and a vehicle in front. Pilot Assist is active up to 81 mph (130 km/h).

Benefits

This reduces the effort needed to constantly adapt the speed to the vehicle in front or adjust the steering to keep within the lane in monotonous driving situations, even without a vehicle in front.

Distance Alert

Distance Alert is automatically turned on when Adaptive Cruise Control is set to standby mode or turned off, at speeds above 19 mph (30 km/h). If the driver wants to turn Distance Alert off, it can be done in the menu system. One-of-five time gaps to vehicles in front can be set with the same buttons on the steering wheel as for Adaptive Cruise Control. If the driver comes closer to a vehicle in front than the set time gap, an information symbol is shown on the windshield Head-up display.

Benefits

This helps the driver keep a desired distance to the vehicle in front with Adaptive Cruise Control off.

Curve Speed Adaptation

Adaptive Cruise Control adapts to curves in the road ahead with information from Sensus Navigation. It can be deactivated if desired.

Benefits

This provides a smoother and more efficient driving experience through curves. This function in Adaptive Cruise Control uses map data via Sensus Navigation to adapt the set speed in curves to a ‘comfortable’ level.

Avoiding or Mitigating Collisions with Other Vehicles

The Polestar 1 first warns the driver (see separate feature), and then brakes automatically – if the driver does not brake or steer away for vehicles (cars, motorcycles, trucks, buses) that are in front of the car, moving slower in the same direction, braking or not moving. At speed differences up to 37 mph (60 km/h) between the car and the vehicle in a collision can be avoided if the driver does not react. At higher speed differences, the collision is mitigated. The driver can take control and brake and/or steer away at any time. If a collision is imminent, at speeds above 19 mph (30 km/h), the front safety belts are tightened to secure the driver’s and front seat passenger’s position. US studies indicate that 50% of drivers involved in collisions have not tried to avoid the collision.

40

Benefits

Risk of collisions with other vehicles (under the conditions above), up to a very high-speed difference of 37 mph (60 km/h) can be avoided. If the speed difference is higher than 31 mph (50 km/h) and the driver has not reacted to the warning, the collision will be mitigated by the automatic braking.

Avoiding or Mitigating Collisions with Oncoming Vehicles in Intersections

If the driver should turn in front of an oncoming vehicle, the Polestar 1 can assist by braking automatically, if the driver does not.

If a collision is imminent, at speeds above 6 mph (10 km/h), the front safety belts are tightened to secure the driver’s and front seat passenger’s position.

Benefits

This reduces the risk of this type of dangerous collision.

Avoiding or Mitigating Collisions with Cyclists

If a cyclist swerves into, or crosses the path of the car, or is stationary in the path of the car, the Polestar 1 warns the driver and brakes automatically if the driver does not. The car’s speed can be reduced by up to 31 mph (50 km/h) and thereby avoid a collision.

Benefits

There is a reduced risk of collisions with cyclists in front of the car and mitigation of the collision if it is unavoidable.

Avoiding or Mitigating Collisions with Pedestrians

If a pedestrian moves into, or crosses the path of the car, or is stationary in the path of the car, the Polestar 1 warns the driver and brakes automatically if the driver does not, at speeds up to 43 mph (70 km/h). A collision with a pedestrian can be avoided at speeds up to 27 mph (45 km/h). For speeds between 28 to 43 mph (45 and 70 km/h), the collision is mitigated. The benefits include a reduced risk for collisions with pedestrians (under the conditions above), and mitigation of the collision if it is unavoidable.

Avoiding or Mitigating Collisions with Large Animals

The standard-fitted radar/camera unit can detect large animals standing on the road or slowly moving across it with the side towards the car. If a large animal is detected, the Polestar 1 warns the driver and brakes automatically, if the driver does not, with a maximum speed reduction of 9 mph (15 km/h). In this way collisions with large animals can be avoided or mitigated. The benefits include a reduced risk for collisions with large animals and mitigation of the collision if it is unavoidable.

Collision Warning in the Dark

The Polestar 1 can detect and classify vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians and large animals even when it is dark (even with the headlights on low/dipped beam).

41

Benefits

The collision warning is especially helpful in the dark and particularly when it comes to pedestrians, cyclists without lighting and large animals.

Warning That Affects Three Human Senses

In all the cases described in the previous features, the Polestar 1 warns of vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians and large animals in three ways simultaneously, affecting three of the human senses: ● A short, light brake pulse ● An audible warning signal ● A warning in the head-up display (or driver display if the head-up display has been turned off)

The warning timing can be set to one of three levels – earlier, normal, or later.

Benefits

This practically eliminates the risk that the driver would miss a warning.

Brake Support

If a collision is imminent and the automatic braking function is activated, or if the driver acts and depresses the brake pedal but not with enough pressure, the brake system brakes with the power calculated to avoid a collision. City Safety provides autonomous pre-braking (not full braking power) before full braking to achieve the most efficient braking when full braking power is applied.

Steering Support

The new City Safety system in the Polestar 1 leverages 90 years of ’ innovative safety research. If the driver faces a risk of colliding with a vehicle, a cyclist, a pedestrian or a large animal in front and starts to steer away, this new system helps the driver steer away as effectively as possible.

How It Works – Steering Support

If steering support detects the driver starts to steer away from an obstacle in front, it helps the driver steer away as effectively and safely as possible by: ● Braking the inner wheels individually, in the turning maneuver to make the turning as effective as possible. ● Adding to the driver’s steering input. ● Applying braking to the wheels on the other side of the car after the turn, if needed, to stabilize the car.

The steering support is always active between 31 (50 km/h) and 62 mph (100 km/h) and cannot be disconnected.

How It Works – City Safety

The Polestar 1 detects and classifies vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians and large animals in front by means of a very compact combined camera and radar unit. The unit is placed behind a black area on the upper part of the windshield, with only a small hole for the very small

42

camera lens visible from the outside – the radar is hidden. The windshield wipers cover this area.

Night time performance is possible thanks to a camera with a very advanced shutter and highly sensitive imager, new detection algorithms and high-performance processor.

Safety – Protective Safety

BODY CONSTRUCTION

To add strength and reduce weight and fuel consumption, the body of Polestar 1 is constructed in high-strength carbon fiber. The strong passenger cell helps protect the people inside in different types of collisions and accidents. The front and rear crumple zones provide efficient energy dissipation.

Benefits

The Polestar 1 body is designed to help protect the occupants in different types of collisions and accidents.

COLLAPSIBLE STEERING COLUMN

The first collapsible steering column was designed by Polestar’s strategic ally Volvo Cars and was put into production in 1973. The aim was to help protect the driver in the event of a frontal collision. The design has been further developed over the years. Together with the three-point safety belt, belt pre-tensioner and airbag in the steering wheel, Volvo Cars keeps developing and refining the design, which also goes into every Polestar model.

Benefits

This helps reduce the risk of being hurt by the steering column in the event of a frontal collision.

AUTOMATIC UNLOCKING IN A COLLISION

If the car’s systems sense a frontal, side or rear collision, or a rollover, the car is unlocked (whether it was locked manually or automatically). The car can also be unlocked in certain types of run-off-road accidents.

Benefits

This makes it possible to open the doors from the outside after an accident.

RUN-OFF ROAD PROTECTION

Run-off-road accidents are common. In the United States, for example, half of all traffic fatalities are road departure accidents. Strategic Ally to Polestar, Volvo Cars, has developed technology to help protect occupants in some of these types of accidents, which also goes into every Polestar model.

43

Run-Off Road Mitigation

Run-off road Mitigation is a system that is aimed to help the driver avoid run-off-road accidents.

Energy Absorbing Seat Cushions

In several types of accidents, the human body is subjected to very high vertical loads, directed downwards, towards the seat cushion. It does not have to be an extreme accident for the spine to incur heavy damage. The front seat cushions have a design that enables them to absorb energy loads even in severe accidents. This reduces the risk for spinal injuries in several different types of accidents.

Prepared Front Safety Belts

Prepared front safety belts, or electrically reversible retractor belts, can automatically tighten the front safety belts in different situations, which may be followed by a collision or an accident, for example if the car runs off the road into rough terrain, into a ditch or becomes airborne. See also ‘Rear Collision Warning’. Not to be confused with safety belt pre- tensioners, which can tension the safety belt when a collision or accident occurs.

Benefits

These can help reduce the risk for injuries in different types of collisions and accidents, as the body is kept in a safe position in the seat before the collision or accident occurs.

How It Works—Prepared Front Safety Belts

The system uses the control unit that activates the airbags, the camera and the radar units the rear radar sensors, brake system sensors, and more, to detect critical situations, which may be followed by a collision or an accident. The safety belts are tightened electrically in two different levels, depending on the severity of the situation. The system tightens and releases the belts without any need for service afterwards.

This is a completely different system from the safety belt pre-tensioners, which tension the safety belts by using a pyrotechnical charge in certain types of collisions, when the collision occurs. When they have been activated, they must be serviced by a workshop.

‘Prepared front safety belts’ can tighten the belts in conjunction with the following scenarios: ● Scenarios with an imminent collision with a vehicle, cyclist or pedestrian ● Rear collision mitigation scenarios ● Panic braking ● Loss of control by the driver and/or the car’s stability functions ● The car runs into rough terrain ● The car runs into a ditch ● The car becomes airborne

FRONTAL AIRBAGS

The safety belts are the car’s primary restraint system and a frontal airbag is a supplemental restraint system (SRS). The airbag on the driver’s side is incorporated in the center of the steering wheel. The passenger airbag is incorporated in the dashboard and has a much greater volume because of the greater distance to the passenger. A driver’s side knee airbag is fitted for the North American market.

44

The airbags are triggered by sensors (which also trigger the safety-belt pre-tensioners) in frontal collisions where they are calculated to be needed.

Benefits

The frontal airbags supplement the safety belts in restraining the driver and front seat passenger as efficiently as possible and help reduce the risk that they will hit the steering wheel and dashboard. The ability to disconnect the front passenger airbag makes it possible to safely mount a child seat in the front passenger seat. Additionally, the passenger airbag cut off switch is very visible when the door is opened to mount a child seat. The placement also makes it impossible to change the position of the switch once the door has been closed.

SIDE AIRBAGS

The side airbags are integrated into the outer sides of the front seat backrests and are triggered by sensors in a side collision where they are calculated to be needed.

As rear-seat passengers are positioned in a more protected part of the body construction, there are no side airbags in the rear.

Benefits

These can help reduce the risk for injuries to the upper body, both the chest and hip area, for the driver and front seat passenger in side collisions.

INFLATABLE CURTAINS

Inflatable curtains are airbags integrated into the longitudinal part of the roof above the doors, and fitted in every Polestar model. They inflate from the top down.

The inflatable curtains are triggered by sensors in a side collision and rollover accidents, as well as some frontal collisions, when they are calculated to be needed.

Benefits

This helps reduce the risk of head and neck injuries.

SEATS THAT PROTECT

The front seats have extremely strong frames, made of different steel grades, offering protection in the event of a side impact.

All seats have anti-submarining protection integrated into the design, which reduces the risk of sliding.

WHIPLASH INJURY PROTECTION SYSTEM

If the car is hit from behind, the head will move forwards and then backwards very quickly, causing whiplash. In order to help reduce this risk, strategic ally Volvo Cars designed front seats with integrated protection against whiplash injuries in 1998, and it is a standard feature in Polestar cars. This whiplash injury protection incorporates the complete backrests and head restraints and is not to be confused with simpler designs that only incorporate the head restraints. The front seats in the Polestar 1 have the latest generation of this unique whiplash injury protection.

45

Benefits

This helps to reduce the risk for whiplash injuries.

BRAKE PEDAL RELEASE

In certain frontal collisions, the brake pedal is released by a pyrotechnical device. It is triggered by the same sensors that trigger the safety belt pre-tensioners and airbags, when it is calculated that they are needed.

Benefits

This reduces the risk for injuries to the right foot and leg in a frontal collision when the foot is on the brake pedal.

ISOFIX MOUNTINGS

Internationally standardized ISOFIX child seat mountings are standard-fitted on the rear seating positions. These are a user-friendly way to fit child seats.

REAR TOP TETHER POINTS

The top tether points for ISOFIX child seats are integrated behind the rear head restraints, in front of the hat shelf loudspeakers, making them easy to find and to attach a top tether. They are very elegantly integrated into the unique hat shelf design.

Chassis

The chassis of the Polestar 1 has been designed to deliver sharply tuned handling responses in combination with comfortable ride characteristics.

A well-balanced car is a prerequisite for optimal handling and road holding. The Polestar 1 has the best possible balance, with a weight-distribution of 48% on the front wheels and 52% on the rear.

The result is a car that is just as fun to drive on challenging winding roads as it is on a long stretch of motorway.

Chassis – Suspension

When it comes to passenger cars, chassis is an umbrella term for the parts of the car that have contact with the road – the suspension, steering and brakes.

Chassis design is a priority for us at Polestar, as it is the basis for handling and grip, which in turn is a prerequisite for a car that should be fun to drive. Another reason for the great focus on chassis design is that it is also the basis for preventive safety.

Front Suspension

The Polestar 1 has a double wishbone front wheel suspension design, which means each of the wheels is attached to the car by two transverse links. With this type of suspension, the handling and road holding characteristics can be made perfect, with a neutral balance and no

46

unwanted understeer. The front suspension design also counteracts torque steer. In addition, most suspension parts are made of aluminum to reduce unsprung weight, which is essential for the best road holding, as well as suspension comfort.

Benefits

This allows for real driving pleasure with excellent handling and road holding, neutrally balanced cornering characteristics and minimum roll, understeer and torque steer. The low weight of the suspension components results in low unsprung weight, which is essential for both road holding and comfort (it also reduces the total weight of the car). Benefits also include safe and secure driving characteristics in all circumstances and conditions.

Rear Suspension

The Polestar 1 has a very advanced rear wheel suspension. It is an integral link design, which is a high technological and exclusive type of rear-wheel suspension. A great advantage with this design is that all characteristics can be individually tuned. A very unique solution is a transverse leaf spring made of a composite material, which is very lightweight and strong, and replaces traditional coil springs. Like the front suspension, most rear suspension parts are made of aluminum to reduce unsprung weight.

Benefits

This provides safe and secure driving characteristics in all circumstances and conditions, real driving pleasure with excellent handling and road holding, neutrally balanced cornering characteristics and a minimum of roll. This also lowers noise, vibration and harshness levels, and the low weight of the suspension components results in low unsprung weight.

Aluminum Subframe

The rear-wheel suspension is mounted in a lightweight aluminum subframe.

Öhlins Dampers

The Polestar 1 has manually adjustable Öhlins dampers. These are some of the most advanced dampers on the market and feature Öhlins’ unique Dual Flow Valve (DFV) technology. Visually the dampers feature a Polestar word mark and an Öhlins logotype.

Öhlins is a Swedish world-renowned manufacturer of dampers for performance and racing cars, as well as sports and racing motorcycles.

Benefits

The benefits include sport handling and road holding, refined ride comfort, maximum road contact irrespective of bumps and other road imperfections, and consistent handling characteristics, however hot the damping oil gets.

How It Works – Öhlins Dampers

The unique Öhlins Dual Flow Valve (DFV) gives the same damping characteristics on rebound as on compression. This makes it possible for the wheel to resume the contact with the road directly after passing, for example, a bump or a pothole. The dampers are each manually adjustable through 22 ‘clicks’ to either soften or firm up the ride quality. Front dampers are adjusted by opening the hood/bonnet and turning the knobs. Rear dampers are

47

adjusted by first jacking up the vehicle, then removing a protective rubber cover from the damper adjustment knob, and then turning the knob.

Öhlins’ needle bleed valve maintains consistent damping rate and handling characteristics, however hot the oil inside the damper gets.

Chassis – Steering

STEERING

The steering is one of the most important elements of a good driving experience – it is the driver’s main contact with the road. The steering system in the Polestar 1 is of the rack and pinion type. This system is well known for precision and good feel, and our engineers have perfected it in the Polestar 1. This allows for driving pleasure thanks to direct, positive feedback from steering inputs.

Electric Power Steering

The power steering is driven by an electric motor instead of a traditional hydraulic pump driven by the engine. This lowers fuel-consumption and CO2 emissions, and enables driver support systems like Lane Keeping Aid and Pilot Assist.

The electric motor is connected to the steering via a so-called ball screw, an advanced technical solution that gives high precision and low friction, delivering precise steering with great feel for the road.

Progressive Power Steering

The power steering is progressive/speed-dependent, as standard. This means that there is a high level of power assistance at low speeds when parking or maneuvering, for example, and progressively less power assisting as the speed rises, when it is not needed.

Benefits

This provides driving pleasure and a high level of comfort, as it is easy to turn the steering wheel at low speeds when parking and maneuverings in tight spaces or in slow city traffic, in spite of the larger tires in a car of this type.

Driver Adjustable Power Steering

The feel of the power steering is adjustable.

Chassis – Brakes

Extremely Powerful Brakes

The Polestar 1 has high-tech, extremely powerful brakes.

The front brakes, which are the most important and subject to the greatest loads, are specified by Polestar and manufactured by Akebono – a supplier of brakes for Formula 1 cars and other high-performance applications. The discs have generous dimensions of 15.7x1.5 inches (400x38 mm). They are ventilated and drilled for efficient cooling. In addition,

48

the discs are of the floating type, flexibly attached to an aluminum center, to cope with extremely high temperatures without deforming. The aluminum calipers have six pistons.

The rear brakes are also very well dimensioned, with discs measuring 15.4x1.0 inches (390X25 mm). Like the front brakes the discs are ventilated, drilled and of the floating type. The rear brakes have floating calipers.

Benefits

This allows for maximum safety and braking performance even under very hard braking, and maximum reassurance and confidence, even during very dynamic driving.

Brake Support

When the accelerator is released very quickly, the brake system supposes that the driver will brake and prepares the brakes by pre-charging (pre-filling) the hydraulic system. If the driver now depresses the brake pedal, braking will start quicker. This function is called ‘Ready Alert brakes.’ In addition, if the driver depresses the brake pedal quickly, the brake system can aid the driver. The brake system can also be prepared on demand from our preventive safety systems that incorporate braking. This can reduce the risk of or mitigate a collision.

Emergency Braking

In emergency situations, drivers tend to depress the brake pedal more quickly than usual. If the driver depresses the brake pedal quickly, and the brake system senses that the driver does not press enough to obtain maximum brake power, the brake system applies full power automatically. Simultaneously, the brake light flashes.

This type of system can be called Emergency Brake Assist, Hydraulic Brake Assist or simply Brake Assist.

Benefits

Both Brake Assist and Emergency Braking give the shortest possible stopping distance when braking in emergency situations, and thereby less risk for accidents. The flashing brake light warns drivers behind and lessens the risk of an impact from behind.

Hill Start Assist

Hill Start Assist keeps the brakes applied for a short period after the brake pedal has been released and until the accelerator is depressed when starting uphill or downhill.

Benefits

This makes it possible to start uphill or downhill without any risk that the car will move while the foot is moved from the brake pedal to the accelerator – a common fear with many drivers.

Power Parking Brake

The parking brake is electronically activated. The control is placed on the tunnel console at approximately the same place as a manual parking brake lever would be and it is operated in a similar way. This means the parking brake is engaged by pulling the control upwards and released by pushing it downwards. It is released automatically when the driver depresses the accelerator, with the gear shifter in Drive or Reverse. The parking brake can be set to engage automatically every time the engine is stopped.

49

In the unlikely case that the car should start to move after the parking brake has been engaged and the car has been vacated, the parking brake will automatically be tightened. This could occur in rare situations, for example when very hot brakes have cooled and if the car is parked on a steep hill.

Benefits

The power parking brake is very convenient and easy to operate for drivers used to a manual parking brake lever, as the control now works in the same way. There is no risk that the car will move after the parking brake has been engaged and the car is left, even in extreme situations.

Automatic Hold Function

When this function has been activated by the driver, the car is held stationary whenever it is stopped. When the driver has braked the car to a halt and releases the brake pedal, the brakes will be kept engaged and the car will not move. If the car is stopped for a longer period, the power parking brake will take over the braking. Whenever the driver wants to drive away, the brakes, or parking brake, are disengaged automatically and smoothly, as soon as the accelerator is depressed.

Benefits

This makes driving and stopping much easier and more convenient, as the car will never move after it has braked to a standstill, and makes stopping and starting at inclines particularly easy and safe. The automatic hold function also facilitates driving in stop-and-go traffic.

Brake-By-Wire System

Brake-by-wire means that the traditional vacuum booster unit is replaced by an electric unit. The electric unit is more efficient and weighs considerably less, lowering fuel consumption and emissions and extending electric driving range. This also provides braking distance, silent, vibration-free anti-lock brake action and improved brake pedal feel.

Powertrain

The Polestar 1 has a plug-in hybrid powertrain with a petrol/gasoline engine driving the front wheels and two main electric motors driving the rear wheels. When both the petrol/gasoline engine and the electric motors work together, all wheels are driven and the car gets exhilarating performance and maximum traction.

The batteries for the electric motors are positioned to contribute to an optimal front-rear weight distribution (front 48%, rear 52%).

Powertrain – Internal Combustion Engine Technology

COMBUSTION ENGINE

The combustion engine in the Polestar 1 is a high-performance 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder gasoline engine. It has both a supercharger and a turbocharger. The mechanically driven

50

supercharger adds torque from low to medium engine speeds/revs and works together with the turbocharger up to 3,500 rpm, where the turbocharger takes over and adds power and torque up to maximum revs. The result is a maximum power of 326 hp (240 kW) for US and China, and 309 hp (227 kW) for EU at 6,000 rpm. A maximum torque of 309.8 lb-ft (420 Nm) is available from as low as 2,200 rpm all the way up to 5,400 rpm. This engine is among the market leaders for specific output (power/capacity ratio), which is comparable to that of bigger, naturally aspirated engines with more cylinders, but with lower fuel costs and CO2 emissions.

Balancer Shafts

The engine uses balancer shafts, which counterbalance the and even-out vibrations in the four-cylinder engine. This offers very smooth and vibration-free running, comparable to in-line engines with more cylinders.

Combined Supercharging and Turbocharging

The engine is both supercharged and turbocharged. Both solutions mean that the air volume that goes into the engine’s cylinders/combustion chambers is made smaller (compressed/charged) instead of making the engine bigger (adding cylinder volume and/or number of cylinders). The result is a smaller engine that performs like a bigger normally aspirated (not supercharged or turbocharged) engine. This provides the same performance as bigger, normally aspirated engines, but with lower fuel costs and CO2 emissions.

Fully Variable Valve Timing

Fully variable valve timing for both the inlet and outlet valves ensures optimal combustion at all engine speeds/revs. This contributes to driving pleasure through high performance at all engine speeds/revs and instant throttle response, as well as lower fuel costs and CO2 emissions.

Direct Fuel Injection

The gasoline engine has direct fuel injection (the fuel is injected directly into the cylinders instead of into the inlet ducts ahead of the cylinders, as with traditional fuel injection). The direct fuel injection system is of the Common Rail type, previously found mainly in modern diesel engines. The system delivers fuel at a very high pressure for petrol engines, 200 bar, which makes the combustion more efficient.

The fuel-injectors are placed centrally, together with the spark plugs, instead of at the side of the combustion chamber, which is a common and simpler technical solution in direct injected engines.

The combustion chambers and the intake and exhaust channels are designed for optimal flow and complete combustion.

Benefits

Direct fuel injection allows for higher performance and lower fuel costs and CO2 emissions than with traditional indirect fuel injection. The centrally placed fuel-injectors contribute to cleaner cold-starts (quicker heating of the catalytic converter) and better drivability – higher torque at low revs.

51

Low Internal Friction

In this engine, friction is reduced by camshafts with ball bearings, a special internal surface treatment, general machining refinement and a fully variable oil pump. Even the engine oil has been specially developed for the engine, with a low viscosity range of 0W-20. This contributes to lower fuel costs and CO2 emissions.

Lightweight Engine

In addition to being compact, the petrol/gasoline engine is made of lightweight aluminum. The auxiliary parts are also weight-optimized in the Polestar 1, like the airbox made of carbon fiber. The lighter engine contributes to an overall lower weight of the car.

A lighter engine also means less weight concentrated at the front of the car, enabling an optimum 48/52 weight distribution between the front and rear.

Patented Catalytic Converter Design

The petrol/gasoline engine has a catalytic converter of such an ingenious, compact design that it has been patented. This reduces harmful substances in the exhausts very soon after cold starts.

Gasoline Particulate Filter (EU- Spec Cars Only

A Gasoline Particulate Filter (GPF) is fitted in the exhaust system. This is a brand-new feature on petrol engines, similar to the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) on Diesel engines and lowers the level of harmful particulates in the exhausts.

Thermal Management

Intelligent heat management includes a water pump that is fully variable and electrically driven, as well as a variable thermostat (194-221°F) (90-105°C). This contributes to low fuel costs and lower CO2 emissions.

Powertrain – Electric Technology

In the Polestar 1, two main electric motors and a combustion engine cooperate to keep fuel consumption and CO2 emissions to a minimum and provide ultimate performance. The two power sources offer exhilarating performance and great amounts of driving pleasure, on a par with serious performance cars.

Benefits

The car is as usable as an ordinary car with the electric motors, running without any emissions in city driving and for many commuting trips, while still capable of long distances when leveraging the gasoline motor.

Two Powerful Electric Motors

The Polestar 1 has two main electric motors, each driving one of the rear wheels. Each motor delivers a maximum power of 116 hp/85 kW, which is a combined power of 232 hp/170 kW and torque of 354lb-ft/480 Nm to the rear wheels. The electric motors can propel

52

the Polestar 1 up to a top speed of 99 mph (160 km/h) in Pure Mode (only electric power), allowing for usable range and torque as a fully electric vehicle.

Integrated Starter Generator

The Polestar 1 is equipped with an Integrated Starter Generator (ISG). This third electric motor adds 68 hp/50 kW and 160 Nm of torque to the already high power and torque of the combustion engine and electric motors, providing efficiency and performance. It also smooths power delivery between gear changes and provides electric torque to the front wheels at low engine speeds, further reducing the demand on the combustion engine and thus saving fuel and reducing emissions.

Driving Range in Pure Mode

When using only the electric motors in Pure mode, the driving range is 77 miles (124 km) on the WLTP cycle, allowing for many people (most people, according to statistics) to commute or do all city driving in pure electric mode.

TRIPLE BATTERIES FOR MAXIMUM POWER AND RANGE

To offer maximal power and the greatest possible range in ‘Pure’ (electric) mode, the Polestar 1 has three lithium-ion batteries. In addition to the longitudinally mounted battery under the tunnel console, two batteries of the same size are mounted transversely behind the rear seats.

Benefits

This provides maximal power, great range in ‘Pure’ (electric) mode and excellent handling, thanks to the perfect weight distribution, with the combination of the centrally and rear mounted battery packs (which would not have been the case with only a rear-mounted battery as in some other cars).

Regenerative Braking

Regenerative braking means that the electric motors are used to slow the car down and thereby act as generators and charge the battery, if needed. This occurs when the driver slows down by releasing the accelerator. It can, however, also take place when the driver brakes by pressing the brake pedal. In this case, the car calculates if the ordinary brakes are needed and, if they are not, the electric motor is used to slow the car down, and in that way charges the battery as mentioned above. If the car calculates that braking with the electric motor is not enough, it blends braking with the electric motor and the regular brakes, in order to use as much regenerative braking as possible. If the car calculates that even more braking power is needed, only the regular brakes are used to slow the car down, and no regenerative braking takes place. The car manages all this automatically and the driver does not have to do anything other than slowing down by releasing the accelerator or pressing the brake pedal, as in any car.

The driver can also choose to slow the Polestar 1 down by pulling the gear-shifter from the ‘D’ position to ‘B’ (for Brake). In this case, the electric motors are used to slow the car down and, thereby, also generate additional power to the batteries. This also creates a “one pedal” driving effect.

53

Benefits

This allows for longer range with electrical power as the battery is charged whenever the accelerator is released, and in many cases, fully or partly, when braking by pressing the brake pedal. It also reduces wear on brake pads and discs, which may result in lower maintenance cost. There is a possibility to choose ‘engine-brake’ via the gearbox ‘B’ position.

Regenerative Stability Control

Regenerative Stability Control is a system Polestar has developed, which adjusts the amount of regenerative braking to keep the car stable at all times. This provides maximum stability under all circumstances during regenerative braking.

Powertrain – Plug-In Hybrid Performance

Genuine Rear Wheel Torque Vectoring

The two rear electric motors allow for real torque vectoring between the rear wheels. This means that the power provided to each rear wheel is adapted for maximum grip instead of using the brakes or by a mechanical limited slip differential.

Benefits

This provides maximum rear-wheel traction and optimal distribution of the power to each of the rear wheels in all circumstances, including hard cornering. This also optimizes cornering traction and stability together with the torque vectoring between the front wheels.

VERY HIGH COMBINED MAXIMUM OUTPUT AND PERFORMANCE

The combined maximum power from the petrol/gasoline engine, the electric motors and the Integrated Starter Generator is 625PS, 619HP SAE for US and China, and 609HP/454 kW for the EU markets. The maximum torque is a huge 738 lb-ft. (1,000 Nm).

The resulting acceleration 0-62 mph (0–100 km/h) is 4.2 seconds. This provides exhilarating performance. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph (250 km/h).

ALL-WHEEL DRIVE WITH FRONT AND REAR POWER SOURCES

When both the petrol/gasoline engine and electric motors are used, all four wheels are driven, providing maximum traction. All-wheel drive can increase traction and make it easier to drive in slippery conditions and other difficult situations, as well as make acceleration from a standstill more efficient. All-wheel drive lowers fuel costs and CO2 emissions more than traditional types of four-wheel drive.

LAUNCH CONTROL WITH FWD, RWD AND AWD

The standard-fitted traction control system is programmed to allow a minimal amount of wheel-spin during full power starts from standstill for the quickest possible acceleration. It is also programmed to allow for the best possible in-gear acceleration, for example, when the driver begins accelerating to overtake another vehicle. This all works together with the powertrain management system.

54

Launch control works on the front wheels with the gasoline engine, on the rear wheels with only the electric motors or with all-wheel drive, with both the front and rear power propulsion systems.

Benefits

This allows for the quickest possible take-off, and quick and safe overtaking in all road conditions.

Powertrain – Drive Modes

DRIVE MODES

Four different preset drive modes, plus one customizable mode, are available. The drive modes are chosen by turning and pressing an elegant and ergonomic roller control on the tunnel console beside the driver’s seat. This means the driver can customize the drive to suit mood or conditions without taking the eyes off the road. The drive modes affect a number of parameters.

Hybrid Mode (default)

In this mode, both the electric motor and gasoline engine are utilized, individually or together. Their operation is optimized with regards to performance, fuel-consumption and comfort. The engine and automatic gearbox are programmed for maximum comfort. This is the default mode every time the car is started.

Pure Mode

This mode prioritizes electric operation and low energy consumption. It helps the driver to maximize driving on the electric motors. This mode is active at speeds up to 99 mph (160 km/h). If the driver depresses the accelerator fully, or exceeds the Pure Mode speed threshold, the combustion engine will start automatically and additional power will be provided. If the drive reduces speed below the Pure Mode speed threshold or lifts off the accelerator pedal, the combustion engine will switch off and fully electric driving will resume.

Power Mode

In this mode, the gasoline engine and the electric motors are working in parallel to ensure the strongest performance, sporty characteristics and quick response. This also means that both the front and rear wheels are continuously driven. During active driving, the use of lower gears is prioritized for great throttle response. ● The steering is set to Dynamic mode. ● The brake system is set to Dynamic mode. ● The Active Sound Control enhances the engine sound. ● The Adaptive Digital Display is set to Sport mode.

AWD (All-Wheel Drive) Mode

This mode is for improving traction in slippery conditions. The Polestar 1 powertrain distributes power from the gasoline engine to the front wheels, and power from the electric motors to the rear wheels in a similar way as some AWD-systems in gasoline cars distributes power between the front and rear wheels.

55

Individual Mode

The driver can tailor an individual drive mode. Individual mode is only displayed if the driver has activated individual settings.

HOLD AND CHARGE FUNCTIONS

In addition to the drive modes, the driver can press a Hold button on the center display to keep the current battery charge for later use, or a Charge button for the to charge the battery to a certain level using the ISG

Powertrain – Gearbox

AUTOMATIC GEARBOX

The gearbox in the Polestar 1 is an eight-speed Geartronic automatic transmission. The gearbox is of a very high-technological design that contributes to very smooth operation and low fuel-consumption. The number of speeds means that the engine’s torque and power band can be utilized more efficiently. Two of the speeds are ‘overdrives,’ which save fuel when cruising at constant speeds, in addition to the lock-up function (which means that the engine is ‘locked-up’ with the gearbox and the energy-consuming torque converter is bypassed). In addition to the gear-shifter positions R, N and D, the Polestar 1 has a B- position, just behind the D-position. If the gear-shifter is pulled to this position, the car is braked by the electric motor, which in this way generates extra power to the batteries.

With the steering wheel paddles, the forward gears in the automatic gearbox can be controlled manually by pulling either of the paddles.

Benefits

This allows for very smooth gear changes and great response at all engine speeds/revs, as the number of gears makes it possible to always be in the engine’s best operating range. This lowers fuel costs and CO2 emissions, and the batteries can be charged further by pulling the gear shifter to the B-position, instead of using only the brakes. This also always makes it possible to control gear changes manually with the steering wheel paddles, which makes manually controlled gear changes very swift and safe, as both hands can be kept on the steering wheel.

56
