Cheryl-Anne Whitlock 16 February 2012 ii Abstract The main purpose of the thesis is to determine to what extent duty of care is extended to reality television participants, to what extent elements of reality television programming are manipulated and whether those manipulations are ethical. Program participants are encouraged to be their ‘real’ and authentic selves, yet reality programming itself is often so extensively manipulated that the genre renders its own output inauthentic, thus compromising participants’ contributions and casting their performance in the same false light.

This paper outlines the various ways Survivor has been able to outwit, outlast, and outplay for twenty-seven seasons. This award-winning American reality competition show tests the physical, mental, emotional, and social limits of anyone who is willing to be “stranded” on a deserted island in order to have the chance to win $1,000,000. As contestants try to adapt to their new island lifestyle, producers try to adapt new ways to keep the audience engaged from season to season. This paper gives readers a detailed history of how the show came to be as well as prediction as to where the show will and will not go in the future.

PICK ME!: USING ARISTOTELIAN RHETORICAL PERSUASION AND ADVERTISING APPEALS FOR SELF-PROMOTION By: Alexander M.Jones A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of Requirements of the CSU Honors Program for Honors in the degree of Bachelor of Arts In English College of Letters and Sciences Columbus State University Abstract This project combines contemporary and classical rhetorical persuasion and applies them to self-promotion. Aristotle’s triad of modes of persuasion, ethos, pathos, and logos, represents classical persuasion. Appeals from advertising, such as humor, fear, music, and argumentum ad populum, represent the contemporary, but also are modern extensions of Aristotle’s triad. These concepts are then applied in such a way that the reader can see how they could use them to their benefit in influencing others. Each concept is defined and shown how it can be used in a spoken communicative way rather than a visual representation.
