“In fifth grade math, Mr. Harry Selner taught me that the number one was a freak of nature. A FON, he called it. Multiply it by any number, nothing happens, divide any number by it and nothing happens. One is a prime, a perfect square, and the smallest positive odd number. One, as a number, is seemingly insignificant. Seven years later, I still don’t understand math, but I have come to realize that one, as a concept, is one of the most powerful concepts in the world. The power of one starts with one feeling, then it is added to one thought, which is then added to one action, and soon, it is added to one movement, and that movement can change the world….The power of one starts with each one of us. We all have the power to feel, to think, and to influence. We must combine this power, and add to each others’, until one by one, we become the most powerful generation history has ever known; the generation to change the course of the world.” Hersh Varma Masha Khusid Jacquelyn Gary • Ava Haynes • Lindsey Smith Outstanding Service to The Beachcomber Peter Martin • Aleaha Thrower • Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science Jennifer Warren Award Madelyne Dreyfuss • Ohio Music Educators Association Justin Sperling • Hersh Varma Gospel Choir Julian Abramof Student Council Spirit Award Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Being there again gave me a sense of reference, a feeling of actually being attached to my own past… As we graduate today we move on to new playgrounds. From the highway, they may seem to be new and flashy. But up close, they can be cold and overwhelming places. So, without a solid sense of reference, and a strong sense of self, you could easily get lost in the tumult. Luckily for us, we have a solid reference point…We will remember Beachwood, our old comfortable playground. And that’s a good thing. Feel attached to your past, it will give you the strength you need to stay rooted while facing the maelstrom of uncertainty that the future brings. And for the present, continue to make life your playground. Run around, fall in the wood chips, don’t be afraid of getting bruised up a bit, but most importantly, connect.
