BRINGING IT HOME Our journey through a challenging year... FOREWORD Our core mission at Mousetrap Theatre Projects is to enrich the lives of young people through theatre and Drama. For over 24 years, we have seen the transformative impact that it can have - the joy, the revelation, and the creative ambitions that can arise from exploring worlds and experiences beyond our own. In March 2020, we had to change course. We had to adapt. We had to 'bring it home'. This report documents how we went from A, to B, to what you see now - a charity doing everything it can to get its programmes back on track; to support the recovery of the theatre industry, and above all to support the needs of schools, families and young people from across the London community. Back in September 2019, London was bustling with back-to-school traffic and tourists squeezing the most out of the summer. A new season of shows began, and we kicked off a bumper term of creative learning projects and theatre trips for young people. We launched our new website, we helped to host TheatreCraft, and we ended the year with a joyous team dinner party. All in all, it was a great start to the academic year. We began 2020 with a team Away Day, where we reviewed our strategy and shaped our plans for the 3 years ahead. Little did we know what was waiting around the corner… The projects we’ve carried out during this intense and challenging time are some of the most inventive, interactive and exciting work we’ve done to date. With over 50% of our small team furloughed, with the support of our Creative Associates and collaborators, we are immensely proud of what we’ve been able to achieve in these circumstances. This year we have witnessed more dramatic, tragic and historic moments than a Shakespeare play. But it has also been a year of creative discovery, of revelation and reinvention - of activism and solidarity in our communities. It has highlighted the barriers that we work so hard to break through and given us even greater motivation to continue on our mission - to engage and enable young people to watch, make and learn from live theatre. THANK YOU to each and every one of our funders, supporters and audience members for helping and inspiring us throughout this dramatic year. Read on to discover some of standout projects we delivered during this tumultuous year of two halves. A tale of two cities and two Mousetraps, before and under COVID-19, and of the remarkable resilience, creativity and talent of the professionals and young people we have the privilege From livintog eng agte hwithe. to unprecedented dream... scenes On 23rd March 2020, COVID-19 raging across Britain, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the first national lockdown. Theatres closed their doors and we retreated to work from home, not yet knowing the full extent of what was to come. Our city was plunged into silence - our streets abandoned and unrecognisable. With theatre trips a key element of every project we run, our work as we had known it was forced to halt. But behind the scenes the action continued. We talked. We brainstormed. We reached out to those we serve and those we collaborate with. We focused on to what we could do, with the resources and technologies we had available. We thought creatively and we adapted fast. With no previous experience of running online activities, within weeks, our first digital project was up and running, #EveryHomeATheatre. The projects we’ve carried out during this intense and challenging time are some of our most inventive, interactive and exciting to date. We are immensely proud of what we’ve been able to achieve in these circumstances, and with over 50% of our team on furlough. For all it has jeopardised and destroyed, the pandemic has been a great catalyst for creativity, self-reflection and activism within our communities. It has highlighted the barriers that we work hard to break through, and given us even greater motivation to continue on our mission - to engage and enable young people from all backgrounds to watch, make and learn from live theatre. BRINGING IT ON! ENGAGING THE SENSES... In the Autumn we hosted two exciting Envision days, bringing over 50 visually-impaired young people into the theatre for a magical, multi-sensory experience like no other! The first was to Matilda the Musical - the second to Some Like It Hip Hop. As part of each Envision day, as well as enjoying these best-selling family productions, young people and their families participated in 90-minute pre-show workshops and an exclusive onstage touch tour, to help them feel at ease and to enrich their experience, understanding and enjoyment of the show. "Envision events are a brilliant opportunity for Eleanor, who lost her sight due to a brain tumour, to experience the theatre. We’ve been to a couple of these events before, and they are brilliant in bringing the show to life for visually impaired children.” Parent EMPOWERING CREATIVITY... After months of careful planning, we were thrilled to launch a new iteration of our collaborative playwriting project, Playmakers, for children with Speech, Language and Communications Needs (SLCN). 47 pupils from across 4 Primary Schools took part and worked together with our specialist facilitators to create a series of superb mini plays on a variety of themes. Sadly, the end of project showcase was postponed due to COVID, but eventually the plays were performed and filmed in December 2020, and pupils finally had a chance to watch the wonderful results of their hard work. "Giving a voice to pupils with severe speech, language and communication difficulties is an incredibly powerful thing to do. They were absolutely thrilled with the play, as we all were." Head Teacher A RECORD-BREAKING RELAXED PERFORMANCE On Monday 20th January, 257 families came together at the Gillian Lynne Theatre for our 10th annual Relaxed Performance. Families came from 30 London boroughs and 39 of the 48 English counties to watch School of Rock in a special, sold-out performance. 319 children with additional needs rocked out together to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s brilliant songs and united to ‘stick it to the man’! Before the performance, we held 3 family workshops to help bring the show to life. We dressed up like rock stars, learned songs from the show, and even formed our own bands! It's safe to say this was our most rock and roll Relaxed Performance to date, and a rip-roaring success all round! Our Relaxed Performance "“What you create with these events are of School of Rock was a little bit of 'magic and pixie dust,' watched by 257 families, including 319 children with memories which keep families afloat additional needs. during our more challenging day to day lives.” Parent Over the Winter, 69 students from 4 colleges across London participated in Next Stage Inclusive, an empowering project which uses drama to help FE College BUILDING students with moderate learning disabilities to develop their confidence and employability skills.
