It is a pleasure to be able to acknowledge them here. I want to begin by thanking all the designers who allowed me to talk with them, hang around their shops, and learn from them. Knowing what I now know about the demands of their work, I am even more amazed that they could find so much time for me. Without their generosity, I would not have this story to tell. The seeds of this book were planted many years ago, but they really grew in conversation with the wonderful colleagues, at di√er- ent institutions, who have read, heard, or talked about these ideas with me, including Christine Balance, Luz Calvo, Derek Chang, Beth Coleman, Iftikhar Dadi, Maria Fernandez, Wen Jin, James Kim, Nhi Lieu, Christina Moon, Viranjini Munsinghe, Mimi Ngu- yen and Minh-Ha Pham (and their spot-on blog, Threadbared), Je√rey Santa Anna, Barry Shank, Julie Sze, Elda Tsou, K.

Vol. 15 | No. 3 | Spring 2007 Lessons from the Other Side— What I Learned About Teaching Legal Writing by Teaching Professional Responsibility By Allison Martin Allison Martin is Clinical Associate Professor of Law at Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis. It’s great to be a student again—the preparation for class, the butterflies if you get asked a question, the intellectual exchange of ideas—but, wait, I am the teacher! And I am not teaching one of my comfortable legal writing courses; I am teaching professional responsibility. Although being a student again and teaching a “casebook” course are two perspectives of legal education different from mine as a legal writing professor, I learned much about teaching legal writing from both. To teach professional responsibility for the first provide quality care to patients, law professors time, I had to become a student again—relearning should become students occasionally to remind old rules and studying new ones. Indeed, it had us of how to provide quality education to students. been 15 years since I had taken professional My first lesson was a reminder to be patient with responsibility in law school and passed the students. After immersing myself in professional Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination responsibility materials and taking wise advice (MPRE). The challenge made me a bit nervous. I from colleagues, I gained more confidence. I was wondered, what if I cannot master the material no expert in the field, however, often mastering well enough to be a good teacher? What if I cannot the material one class ahead of my students.

  • The Creative Economy of Houston
JULY 2012 THECREATIVE ECONOMY OF HOUSTON A comprehensive sTUDY OF creaTIVE-SECTor INDUStrieS and their IMPACT ON THE HOUSTON ECONOMY Commissioned by Houston Arts Alliance and University of Houston in partnership with Greater Houston Partnership Data and Analysis by EMSI Thank you to all of the many thoughtful participants in bringing this study to a reality. Nearly three years WELCOME LETTER ago, Houston Arts Alliance and University of Houston convened a group of creative, academic and policy leaders to discuss the broad creative sector in Houston. A few preliminary take-aways have informed the work since then. Among them is the sense that the delineation between the for-profit creative sectors and the non-profit arts is now highly porous. Artists and other creatives move fluidly between work in major arts institutions, community-based organizations, film, design and other creative endeavors. The “arts” today are about creative expression and creative experience, and don’t fall neatly within for-profit and non-profit parameters. We need to shift the perception from the arts as a quality of life attraction for a well-qualified workforce, to the creative sectors as a tremendously powerful component of the economy unto itself. I believe this study reflects these early ideas. This is a conservative study. By design, we asked our colleagues at EMSI to mirror the study as much as possible to successful studies in other major US cities, but to tailor it to Houston. The result are findings that are defendable, easy to grasp, and are presented within the context of Houston’s job sectors.

  • Machine Learning (Ml) for Tracking the Geo-Temporality of a Trend: Documenting the Frequency of the Baseball-Trucker Hat on Social Media and the Runway
MACHINE LEARNING (ML) FOR TRACKING THE GEO-TEMPORALITY OF A TREND: DOCUMENTING THE FREQUENCY OF THE BASEBALL-TRUCKER HAT ON SOCIAL MEDIA AND THE RUNWAY A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts by Rachel Rose Getman May 2019 © 2019 Rachel Rose Getman ABSTRACT This study applied fine-grained Machine Learning (ML) to document the frequency of baseball-trucker hats on social media with images populated from the Matzen et al. (2017) StreetStyle-27k Instagram dataset (2013-2016) and as produced in runway shows for the luxury market with images populated from the Vogue Runway database (2000-2018). The results show a low frequency of baseball-trucker hats on social media from 2013-2016 with little annual fluctuation. The Vogue Runway plots showed that baseball-hats appeared on the runway before 2008 with a slow but steady annual increase from 2008 through 2018 with a spike in 2016 to 2017. The trend is discussed within the context of social, cultural, and economic factors. Although ML requires refinement, its use as a tool to document and analyze increasingly complex trends is promising for scholars. The study shows one implementation of high-level concept recognition to map the geo-temporality of a fashion trend. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Rachel R. Getman holds a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). Her interests lie in the intersection of arts and sciences through interdisciplinary collaboration. The diversification of her professional experience from the service industry, education, wardrobe styling, apparel production, commercial vocals, and organic agriculture influence her advocacy for holistic thinking and non-linear problem solving.

  • Hall Pass – Bios for Prelim Notes
HALL PASS Best buds Rick and Fred (Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis) have both been married for many years. When they begin to show signs of restlessness at home, their wives (Jenna Fischer and Christina Applegate) take a bold approach to revitalize their marriages: they grant the guys a “hall pass,” one week of freedom to do whatever they want. No questions asked. At first, it sounds like a dream come true for Rick and Fred, but they quickly discover that their expectations of the single life—and themselves—are completely and hilariously out of sync with reality. “Hall Pass,” a new comedy from the Farrelly brothers (“There’s Something About Mary,” “Dumb and Dumber”), stars Owen Wilson (“Wedding Crashers,” “Marley & Me”) as Rick, and Jason Sudeikis (“What Happens in Vegas,” “Going the Distance”) as Fred. Jenna Fischer (TV’s “The Office”) stars as Rick’s wife, Maggie; Richard Jenkins (“Step Brothers”) as the guys’ old friend, perpetual bachelor Coakley; and Christina Applegate (“Going the Distance,” TV’s “Samantha Who?”) as Fred’s wife, Grace. “Hall Pass” is directed and produced by Peter Farrelly & Bobby Farrelly, from a screenplay by Pete Jones & Peter Farrelly & Kevin Barnett & Bobby Farrelly, story by Pete Jones. Re-teaming with the Farrellys are producer Bradley Thomas and executive producer Marc S. Fischer, who collaborated with the Farrellys on their hit comedies “There’s Something About Mary” and “Shallow Hall.” Also serving as executive producers are Toby Emmerich, Richard Brener and Merideth Finn, with co-producers Mark Charpentier and John Rickard. The creative filmmaking team includes director of photography Matthew F.
