What Transpires Beneath the Royal Skies Ujeena Rana

Beneath the Royal Skies deserved four stars but ended with two, all because of the 100-page-script (the fact was announced to the audience before the show got underway), which resulted in the play being too long for its own good. The director, Archana Sarda, could have put forth a tight production but the playwright in her clearly carried her away. Beneath the Royal Skies was a Hindi translation of Sarda›s own English play by the same name. On to the plot: Mimi serves as a nanny in the palace of Ramnagar, a province in Rajasthan. As a rule of the royal household, she is forbidden from going home to her three children. It is only after 17 long years that she is able to reunite with her family. Once home, Mimi vows to bring out the skeletons in her closet before she dies. What follows is a tale of anger, mystery and surprises. As stated earlier, the incredibly long script was the play›s biggest weakness. A couple of scenes that had the potential to pack a punch were diluted in the pool of unending anecdotes, and commendable performances were taken over by too many subplots. In short, there was too much of everything. The only saving grace was the fact that the play cashed in on the element of mystery. But it wasn›t all bad. In fact, the actors were decent and, in some instances, they really shone. Whoever the casting director was did a fine job. All the actors looked their part, except for Nandu, the child artist, who seemed lost simply because he had nothing to do. Mimi›s Rajasthani dialect was on point in every scene, and Princess Mallika looked and acted like a true royal. The over-the-top gestures and loud acting of Birju and Sushila, a married couple, was balanced by a composed performance by Princess Mallika and Mimi. But it was Sushila who brought life to the otherwise barren scenes. Spouse-bashing one-liners and quick repartees by the wife were a hit with the audience, receiving the loudest applause and peals of thunderous laughter. Beneath The Royal Skies, a presentation of Pink and Grey Unlimited, was staged at the Russian Cultural Centre, Kamal Pokhari on 10 April. 29
