Lyonia 7(1) 2004 - Conservation of Biological and Cultural Diversity in the Andes and the Amazon Basin - Flora and Vegetation Volume 7(1) December 2004 ISSN: 0888-9619 odd-right: 2 Introduction Scientists widely agree that species extinction has heavily accelerated in the last decades. The majority of the worlds species are found in tropical forests, covering a mere ten percent of the planets surface. A grave problem for the conservation of diversity is the still very fragmentary knowledge of the ecology of most species. The Andes and the Amazon Basin represent one of the most important Biodiversity-Hotspots on Earth. Attempts of sustainable management and conservation must integrate local communities and their traditional knowledge. Management decisions need to include the high importance of natural resources in providing building materials, food and medicines for rural as well as urbanized communities. The traditional use of forest resources, particularly of non-timber products like medicinal plants, has deep roots not only in indigenous communities, but is practiced in a wide section of society. The use of medicinal herbs is often an economically inevitable alternative to expensive western medicine. The base knowledge of this traditional use is passed from one generation to the next. Especially the medical use represents a highly dynamic, always evolving process, where new knowledge is constantly being obtained, and linked to traditional practices. An increased emphasis is being placed en possible economic benefits especially of the medicinal use of tropical forest products instead of pure timber harvesting, an approach particularly appealing to countries with difficult economic conditions. Most research efforts, due to lack of manpower, time end resources, focus only on either biodiversity assessments or ethnobotanical inventories, or try to implement management and use measures without having a sound scientific base to do so. -

Traits also can act as indicators of plant invasion processes. If traits are proven to be a significant proxy for plant invasiveness, then invasiveness of exotic species may be efficiently predicted by measuring traits. Botanic gardens have consistently supported ex-situ plant conservation, research, and environmental education. However, botanic gardens can also be pathways of exotic invasive species introduction. Botanic gardens should become a strategic stakeholder for exotic invasive plant species management. For exotic invasive species management, we cannot solely rely on ecological approaches. Social perception is an important component of invasive species management. Social perception may become either a problem or a solution for invasive species management. These perceptions should be clarified among relevant stakeholders to minimize conflicts of interest among relevant stakeholders of invasive species management. Un certain nombre de travaux portent sur la grossesse et l'accouchement au Mexique, mais le thème du post- partum a été peu étudié en profondeur, bien que les indigknes insistent sur le danger et l'importance des soins à cette période. Dans ce travail, la conception, la grossesse et l'accouchement sont décrits à titre introductif, tandis que les pratiques du post- partum sont analysées en détail : la période de repos de 20 ou 40 jours, le régime alimentaire particulier, l'abstinence sexuelle, les diverses précautions et prohibitions, les soins corporels, les tisanes, les bains de plantes et surtout, le bain de vapeur, à fonction à la fois thérapeutique et rituelle. L'article posele problème de l'analyse des données touchant aux pratiques corpo- relles féminines, difficilement verbalisées. Il amorce également une comparaison avec les pratiques des pays industrialisés occidentaux et suggère de puiser dans les pratiques et les connaissances des sociétés dites << traditionnelles >> pour remédier aux dépressions post-partum. Métodos: Se llevó a cabo una exhaustiva revisión de literatura florística y taxonómica, así como la revi- sión de unos 200,000 ejemplares de herbario, depositados en más de 20 herbarios, tanto nacionales como del extranjero. Resultados: México registra 26 tribus, 417 géneros y 3,113 especies de Asteraceae, de las cuales 3,050 son especies nativas y 1,988 (63.9 %) son endémicas del territorio nacional. Los géneros más relevantes, tanto por el número de especies como por su componente endémico, son Ageratina (164 y 135, respecti- vamente), Verbesina (164, 138) y Stevia (116, 95). Los estados con mayor número de especies son Oaxa- ca (1,040), Jalisco (956), Durango (909), Guerrero (855) y Michoacán (837). Los biomas con la mayor riqueza de géneros y especies son el bosque templado (1,906) y el matorral xerófilo (1,254). -

Smithsonian Contri- butions to Botany, number 52, 28 pages, 3 tables, 1981.-Chromosome reports are provided for 145 populations, including first reports for 33 species and three genera, Garcilassa, Riencourtia, and Helianthopsis. Chromosome numbers are arranged according to Robinson’s recently broadened concept of the Heliantheae, with citations for 212 of the ca. 265 genera and 32 of the 35 subtribes. Diverse elements, including the Ambrosieae, typical Heliantheae, most Helenieae, the Tegeteae, and genera such as Arnica from the Senecioneae, are seen to share a specialized cytological history involving polyploid ancestry. The authors disagree with one another regarding the point at which such polyploidy occurred and on whether subtribes lacking higher numbers, such as the Galinsoginae, share the polyploid ancestry. Numerous examples of aneuploid decrease, secondary polyploidy, and some secondary aneuploid decreases are cited. The Marshalliinae are considered remote from other subtribes and close to the Inuleae. Evidence from related tribes favors an ultimate base of X = 10 for the Heliantheae and at least the subfamily As teroideae. Como parte del proyecto “Contribución al estudio de las Asteraceae”, en el presente trabajo se describen y diferencian entre sí, las cuatro especies hasta hoy reportadas para Ve- nezuela, considerándose también el estatus actual de su nomenclatura. Asimismo, se pre- senta una clave para las especies de Critonia en el país y se acompaña cada especie con una ilustración detallada y aspectos fitogeofráficos de las mismas. Abstract: The Botanic Garden of Warsaw University, established in 1818, is one of the oldest botanic gardens in Poland. It is located in the centre of Warsaw within its historic district. Initially it covered an area of 22 ha, but in 1834 the garden area was reduced by 2/3, and has remained unchanged since then. Today, the cultivated area covers 5.16 ha. The plant collection of 5000 taxa forms the foundation for a diverse range of educational activities. The collection of threatened and protected Polish plant species plays an especially important role. The Botanic Garden is a scientific and didactic unit. Its educational activities are aimed not only at university students, biology teachers, and school and preschool children, but also at a very wide public. Within the garden there are designed and well marked educational paths dedicated to various topics. Clear descriptions of the paths can be found in the garden guide, both in Polish and English. Specially designed educational games for children, Green Peter and Green Domino, serve a supplementary role. -

Trees or tree-like plants are defined here broadly as perennial, self-supporting plants with a total height of at least 5 m (without ascending leaves or inflorescences), and with one or several erect stems with a diameter of at least 10 cm. We continue our compilation of an updated list of all native Mexican tree species with the dicotyledonous families Asteraceae (36 species, 39% endemic), Leguminosae with its 3 subfamilies (449 species, 41% endemic), and Rubiaceae (134 species, 24% endemic). The tallest tree species reach 20 m in the Asteraceae, 70 m in the Leguminosae, and also 70 m in the Rubiaceae. The species-richest genus is Lonchocarpus with 67 tree species in Mexico. Three legume genera are endemic to Mexico (Conzattia, Hesperothamnus, and Heteroflorum). The appendix lists all species, including their original publication, references of taxonomic revisions, existence of subspecies or varieties, maximum height in Mexico, and endemism status. Las plantas arbóreas o arborescentes se definen aquí en un sentido amplio como plantas perennes que se pueden sostener por sí solas, con una altura total de al menos 5 m (sin considerar hojas o inflorescencias ascendentes) y con uno o varios tallos erectos de un diámetro de al menos 10 cm. -

We have only selected flowers which are garden- worthy, easily obtainable, well-known, and widely acknowledged as being attractive to pollinating insects. In some case we have given extra comments about garden- worthiness. This is intended as a clear and concise short list to help gardeners; it is not intended to be comprehensive and we have avoided suggesting plants which are difficult to grow or obtain, or whose benefit to pollinators is still a matter for debate. We have omitted several plants that are considered to have invasive potential, and have qualified some others on the list with comments advising readers how to avoid invasive forms. PLANT ANGELICA (Angelica species). Attractive to a range of insects, especially hoverflies and solitary bees. AUBRETIA (Aubrieta deltoides hybrids). An important early nectar for insects coming out of hibernation. BELLFLOWER (Campanula species and cultivars). Forage for bumblebees and some solitary bees. BETONY (Stachys officinalis). Attractive to bumblebees. Butterfly Conversation’s Awarded the Royal Horticultural Top Butterflys Society’s ‘Award of Garden Nectar Plants. Merit’. PLANT BIRD’S FOOT TREFOIL (Lotus corniculatus). Larval food plant for Common Blue, Dingy Skipper and several moths. Also an important pollen source for bumblebees. Can be grown in gravel or planted in a lawn that is mowed with blades set high during the flowering period. BOWLES’ WALLFLOWER (Erysimum Bowles Mauve). Mauve perennial wallflower, long season nectar for butterflies, moths and many bee species. -

En el PNM se reconocen seis tipos de vegetación, predominando los bosques de Pinus-Quercus y de Quercus. Se encontraron 101 especies, distribuidas en 13 tribus y 51 géneros; dos de ellas naturalizadas (exóticas). Los miembros más numerosos son de las tribus Eupatorieae (26), Heliantheae (17), Astereae (11) y Coreopsideae (10). Los géneros mejor representados son Ageratina (11), Stevia (11), Pseudognaphalium (6) y Dahlia (5). Las especies endémicas al territorio de la República constituyen el componente más importante (54), siguiendo en relevancia las distribuidas de México a Centroamérica (16); solamente cinco (incluyendo las dos introducidas) también existen en el Viejo Mundo. El uso de estimadores no paramétricos indicó que el grado de completitud del inventario de la flora sinanterológica conocida hasta la fecha para el Parque es de entre 70 y 84%.
