Hyperreality and Virtual Worlds: When the Virtual Is Real

Hyperreality and virtual worlds: when the virtual is real, Sphera Publica, 2(19), 36‐58. Abstract This article questions what is hyperreality and underlines the role of the signs/images fostering the perception of a virtual world. It argues the potentiality of signs as artefacts. Starting from Agamben’s perspective regarding contemporary, the hyperreality is understood as a modern, visual and mass manifestation of the need for simulacra in a non-referential virtual world. How hyperreality, spectacle, simulation, and appearance emerge out of reality? What is authentic or real are issues raised using images and technological devices. The images are popular and amplify the effects of distraction and social alienation. The image is immediately absorbed, spectacular, attractive, a peculiar ready-to-think that eliminates or dilutes the concepts and produces a fast culture. Through a reflexive strategy, this article is conceptual (it has no case study or empirical work) and has the purpose of problematize the experience of hyperreality, which is reshaping and restructuring patterns of social life and social interdependence, and the ways we see, think, feel, act or just mean and interpret the reality. Molecular Symmetry
Molecular Symmetry Symmetry helps us understand molecular structure, some chemical properties, and characteristics of physical properties (spectroscopy) – used with group theory to predict vibrational spectra for the identification of molecular shape, and as a tool for understanding electronic structure and bonding. Symmetrical : implies the species possesses a number of indistinguishable configurations. 1 Group Theory : mathematical treatment of symmetry. symmetry operation – an operation performed on an object which leaves it in a configuration that is indistinguishable from, and superimposable on, the original configuration. symmetry elements – the points, lines, or planes to which a symmetry operation is carried out. Element Operation Symbol Identity Identity E Symmetry plane Reflection in the plane σ Inversion center Inversion of a point x,y,z to -x,-y,-z i Proper axis Rotation by (360/n)° Cn 1. Rotation by (360/n)° Improper axis S 2. Reflection in plane perpendicular to rotation axis n Proper axes of rotation (C n) Rotation with respect to a line (axis of rotation). •Cn is a rotation of (360/n)°. •C2 = 180° rotation, C 3 = 120° rotation, C 4 = 90° rotation, C 5 = 72° rotation, C 6 = 60° rotation… •Each rotation brings you to an indistinguishable state from the original. However, rotation by 90° about the same axis does not give back the identical molecule. XeF 4 is square planar. Therefore H 2O does NOT possess It has four different C 2 axes. a C 4 symmetry axis. A C 4 axis out of the page is called the principle axis because it has the largest n . By convention, the principle axis is in the z-direction 2 3 Reflection through a planes of symmetry (mirror plane) If reflection of all parts of a molecule through a plane produced an indistinguishable configuration, the symmetry element is called a mirror plane or plane of symmetry . -

The Sanctification of ear:F Images of the Religious in Horror Films Abstract Horror film functions both as a threat and a catharsis by confronting us with our fear of death, the supernatural, the unknown and irrational, ''the other" in general, a loss of identity, and forces beyond our control. Over the last century, religious symbols and themes have played a prominent and persistent role in the on-screen construction of this confrontation. That role is, at the same time, ambiguous insofar as religious iconography has become unhinged from a compelling moral vision and reduced to mere conventions that produce a quasi-religious quality to horror that lacks the symbolic power required to engage us at the deepest level of our being. Although religious symbols in horror films are conventional in their frequent use, they may have lost all connection to deeper human questions. -
Teleportation
TELEPORTATION ESSAY FOR THE COURSE QUANTUM MECHANICS FOR MATHEMATICIANS ANNE VAN WEERDEN SUPERVISOR DR B.R.U. DHERIN UTRECHT UNIVERSITY JUNE 2010 PREFACE The aim of this essay is to describe the teleportation process in such a way that it will be clear what is done so far, and what is still needed, to develop a teleportation device for humans, which would be my ultimate goal. However much is done already, there are thresholds that still have to be overcome, some of which will need real ingenuity, and others brute computing power, far more than we are now capable of. But I will show why I have confidence that we will reach this goal by describing the astonishing developments in the field of teleportation and the speed with which computing, or technology, evolves. The discovery that teleportation really is possible came about while I was in my thirties, but I was largely unaware of its further developments until I started the research for this essay. Assuming that I am not the only one who did not know, I wrote this essay aimed at people from my age, in their fifties, who, like me, started out without television and computer, I even remember my Mother telling me how she bought a transistor radio for the first time, placed it in a closet and closed the door, just to be amazed that it could still receive signals and play. We saw it all come by, from the first steps on the Moon watched on the television my parents had only bought a few years earlier, I clearly remember asking my Father who, with much foresight, got us out of our beds despite my -

Introduction Time is mysterious. Philosophers and scientists have pondered the question of what time might be for centuries and yet till this day, we don’t know what it is. Everyone talks about time, in fact, it’s the most common noun per the Oxford Dictionary. It’s in everything from history to music to culture. Despite time’s mysterious nature there are a lot of things that we can discuss in a logical manner. Time travel on the other hand is even more mysterious.
