You can get an idea of just how much there is just by glancing down at the contents below – every kind of rock n’ roll you could possibly imag- Sine along with comedy, community theatre and much more. Kudos to the Fort Wayne folks who have made this plethora of entertainment options possible – because in 20 years of publishing northeast Indiana’s free- distribution arts and entertainment weekly, we’ve never seen a summer quite like this one. What’s most impressive is that it’s obvious these folks are nowhere close to being done. Witness a new column from Steve Penhollow, Fort Forward, which will keep whatzup readers apprised of the many community and cultural enhancements in various stages of development. His inaugural column features various community leaders’ attempt to create a “destination festival” (think Lollapalooza) in downtown Fort Wayne. So whether your bag is KISS, Jim Gaffigan, Ratt, cowboy singers, tributes to pop stars, dinner theater or – well, you get the gist – you’re going to find something worth doing in these pages. The next step is to go out and do it. • Halestorm Rocks the Palladium
Halestorm Rocks The Palladium Halestorm recently came through New England and played the Worcester Palladium on Nov 29. The show was nothing short of amazing. Frontwoman Lzzy Hale was on fire with her incredible vocal range as well as her ability to lay down awesome guitar riffs with the forefathers of hard rock. Opening the set was their hard and heavy track, “Mz Hyde” off of their last studio album The Strange Case Of…. The crowd was eating it up from the moment Lzzy stepped out onto the stage. The night was full of their signature tracks, old and new, and with a few surprises thrown in the mix. Known for their ability to do any songs they’ve covered justice, there were a couple curveballs in the night’s lineup of songs. First, was the classic Judas Priest song “Dissident Aggressor.” Being a huge Halestorm fan, this took me by surprise. A very pleasant surprise. To see this band rock such a killer song from one of the godfathers of heavy metal, and have Lzzy do Rob Halford such justice, was just something you had to see to believe. The other cover choice toward the end of their set was the Fleetwood Mac hit “Gold Dust Woman.” Stevie Nicks is a big influence for Lzzy’s more mellow vocals, and I can only assume that Stevie herself would be incredibly proud. The cover was absolutely flawless. I think this is how Halestorm appeals to such a wide range of age groups. They have their own classic hard rock sound, but are tweaked to appeal to younger generations.

The “freak folk” fringe having largely faded, the nourishing, elemental influence of Americana in all its permutations continues to generate quietly exciting new music. This was evident last week at Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro, North Carolina, during an evening of itinerant, wornin, unbeaten songs performed by The Low Anthem and Blind Pilot. Both bands make music that is melancholy but not maudlin, that is steeped in oldtime American music but not anachronistic. The Low Anthem, a Rhode Island trio, began their set with pretty unconventional instrumentation: Ben Knox Miller playing acoustic guitar and singing, Jeffrey Prystowsky on organ, and Jocie Adams playing the crotales— sort of a small xylophone made up of discs instead of planks—with a violin bow, by far the most interesting thing I’ve seen done with a violin bow since I last saw Sigur Rós.

  • Fast Lane by Kristen Ashley
FAST LANE BY KRISTEN ASHLEY Acknowledgments Many moons ago, I had the occasion to really listen to the song “Life in the Fast Lane” by The Eagles. I’d heard it before, tons of times. But on that listen, something struck me. Being a romantic at heart, a romance novelist and addicted to romance for as long as I can remember, that song captured me as lyrics often do. Especially if a love story is told. Any kind of love story. Even the ones without happy endings. Maybe especially ones without happy endings. So much said in a few spare lines. So many emotions welling. And as is the magic of music, on each new listen, it happens again like you’d never heard that song before. I became obsessed with it, inspired by this cautionary tale, and determined to find the right story that would fit that inspiration. It was something I thought I’d fiddle with “someday,” which is where a great number of my ideas or inspirations are relegated. Then I read Taylor Jenkins Reid’s Daisy Jones and the Six. I have never, in my life, put down a book because I was loving it so much, I had to draw it out for as long as I could. And then, weeks later, I picked it up, only begrudgingly, because I knew opening that book again would mean finishing it, and I never wanted it to end. The fresh, unique way TJR told that story as an oral history of a 70s rock band blew my mind.
