    Applicant UNESCO Global Geopark Kefalonia-Ithaca, Greece Geographical and geological summary 1. Physical and human geography The Kefalonia – Ithaca applicant UNESCO Global Geopark is located in Western Greece (SE Europe). It is an island complex (Kefalonia-Ithaca-Atokos-Arkoudi) belonging to the Heptanese (Ionian Sea). It is located 340,3 km from Athens, the capital of Greece and 165.37 and 258 km from Albania and Italy respectively. Its surface area reaches 3.006 km2 and includes 913,075 km2 of land and 2.092,9 km2 of marine area. The geopark ‘s area belongs administratively to the Ionian Islands Perfecture. Kefalonia (38°12′44′′ N 20°32′00′′ E) occupies an area of 773 km2. Its capital city is Argostoli. According to the last census, 35.801 inhabitants were recorded living mainly in coastal settlements. Ithaca (38°23′59.28′′ N 20°41′21.11′′E) follows in size with 117 km2 surface area. Vathi is the capital city. In winter 3.084 residents are living on the island but in the summer the population is more than double. The local residents in the geopark ‘s area are mostly occupied with agriculture, fishery and tourism. Especially tourism plays an important role in the economic development of the area. Atokos (4,4 km2) and Arkoudi (4,275 km2) are small desolated islands north of Ithaca. Kefalonia includes four main peninsulas (Paliki, Erisos, Livatho and Atro). The mean altitude of the island is 358,5m. Approximately 37.5% is occupied by mountains, 42,5% is semi-mountainous and 20% is occupied by lowland areas.

    A Cruise in the Ionian Sea in August Peter Bruce If you have a boat in the Med, you might think that July and August are months to avoid due to the heat and the number of other boating people on holiday. But what if your boat is in the UK and a kind friend offers his Med-based Oyster 46 for an August cruise and you are invited to join…. what then? Sandy and I met up with Brad and Joyce Bradbeer, to whom the boat had been lent, aboard Skat, owned by Nigel Southward (RCC), at Eufimia in Kefalonia on 3 August. After a shop for provisions and, happily, we found a supermarket that delivered, we then had a swim and dinner opposite the quay. Technically speaking, recal- culating the impact of summer residents and visitors, the human pressure on the island is equivalent to 6,182 all-year inhabitants. The demand for water can be estimated to 247 million litres/year, of which is seems the islanders use of rainwater meets one third of the demand.     Ionian Islands & suggested itineraries The Ionian Sea is one of the most idyllic cruising areas of the Mediterranean. Crystal clear turquoise waters, charming little villages, spectacular countryside and a pleasant north westerly breeze which rarely exceeds force 5, make it a sailor’s paradise! It is located at the western side of mainland Greece and it stretches all the way from Corfu in the north to Zante in the south. The Ionian Sea is one of our favorite cruising areas, so we’ll try to describe the islands for you here, although it’s difficult to put in words their real beauty! One thing that makes the western side of Greece different is the lush vegetation, which consists mostly of olive groves, vineyards, a variety of fruit trees but also pine and cyprus forests. And all that, thanks to the high rainfall that this area receives in the winter, between November and March. With the exception of the two bigger and more touristy islands (Corfu and Zante), the rest are off the beaten track and the best way to visit them is by yacht, as they don’t even have ports or airports. The locals who are mostly fishermen and farmers are very laid back and friendly, so we are not surprised when we often hear our guests mention that during their evening walk they were invited by an old lady to her garden for a cup of coffee! For our cruises we have chosen Lefkas as a base, because it is located in the center of the Ionian Islands.

The dominant buildings types are masonry, reinforced concrete (RC) and monumental buildings. Masonry buildings suffered the most due to their high vulnerability. RC buildings showed good performance due to their good construction quality.

Other XIX century celebrity visitors included Goethe, Oscar Wilde, Gerald and Lawrence Darrell and Napoleon. 4 Syvota Sivota is a small settlement in Greece, distinguished by its quaint architecture and a group of small islands opposite from the town, a popular swimming spot of locals and visitors. 5 Paxi & Antipaxi Paxi, also known as Paxos, is the smallest of the major Ionian Islands. It has a hauntingly beautiful landscape of centuries-old woods and groves, winding stone walls, vintage olive oil presses and abandoned farms. Tere are only three coastal settlements here and several mountain-clinging villages further inland. Eastern coast has several beaches with fine pebbles, while the western coast is craggy cliffs with occasional grottoes accessible only from the sea. Unlike Corfu, Paxi is not a popular tourist destination, but it is impossible not to love this island if you serendipitously stumble upon it.
