I was massively grateful to be able to attend, meaning that there was only one of the top echelon team missing from proceedings (Randy Byers), who due to the exigencies of work, would only have been able to flit in for barely two days of Desperate Fun. Them Chungas know their fanac though, don’t they just? Andy Hooper’s sterling contributions to the program in particular and the whole event in general might have led the proverbial Martian drop-in to conclude that it was another of his Corflus after all. -

EGOBOO 11, the genuine old time honky-tonk fanzine, is edited and sometimes even published by John D. Berry (Mayfield House, Stanford, Calif. 94305) and Ted White (339 49th St., Brooklyn, NY 11220). We egoboost people who send us letters, fanzines in trade (to both editors), or 551.00 eash (for one issue; outrageous, isn’t it?). Looks like 24 pages is going to be the permanent: size, gang. This is Deimos Publi cation 46, and Many Thanks go to Bill Blackbeard for the use of his Gestetner in printing last issue. Art this issue by *Rotsler,* Jay Kinney, Steve Stiles, and Jay Lynch. SFCON: The SECon was the best con I've O been to... since . the Baycon._ In the 4 o time between those two, I went to the 1969 Midwestcon and the St. Louiscon, both of geiaEg which were good conventions, but neither had quite the feel of quality that I found in the BArea's new region al. All the right people were there, and the parties—the heart o± any convention as far as I’m concerned—were great. The people I saw the most of were all of the fans and ex-fans from the BArea who came out of the woodwork: Bob & Margo Lichtman, Dick &_Dat Ellington, Greg & Joan Benford, Jim & Hilary Benford (and Dominic, their new son), Bill Donaho & his attendant crew; the Los Angeles visitors: Bill Rotsler, Daul Turner & Neola, and George Clayton Johnson; Buz & Elinor Busby, who came down from Seattle; and the Canadian Emissary, Boyd Raeburn, who was on his way home to Toronto from New Zealand at the time. -

Los comentarios provocados por este ensayo -sobre todo la larga y cuidadosamente pensada respuesta del reconocido editor de fotografía John G. Morris- me han motivado a hacer unos cambios a la versión original, en particular del párrafo en el cual escribo sobre la imagen de Joe Rosenthal del alzamiento de la bandera en Iwo Jima. Agradezco a todos los que han tomado el tiempo y han hecho el esfuerzo para criticar mi trabajo. Además, saludo al medio del Internet que nos permite interactuar y así clarificar nuestros argumentos. Unas observaciones iniciales podrían servir para prevenir futuros malentendidos. 1. Mi intención en este ensayo no es ni la de difamar a fotoperiodistas estimados ni la de cuestionar el valor que se requiere para hacer las imágenes que se han vuelto fundamentales para nuestra cultura visual. Los hombres y las mujeres que han perdido sus vidas para traernos las noticias son en sí testimonios que bastan para demostrar el coraje que este oficio requiere. Más bien, el ensayo fue escrito como un componente de un análisis más extensivo de la forma documental, la credibilidad que es su base y la estética realista que se aprovecha de la fe generada por la fotografía como índice (en lugar de ser un ícono o un símbolo). Quisiera examinar la noción muchas veces expresada que la digitalización es la “muerte de la fotografía documental y del fotoperiodismo” al mostrar cuántas famosas imágenes han resultado, de alguna manera, de lo que el fotoperiodista mexicano, Nacho López, describió como "previsualización". -

While it purports to show my client in a motel bed- room with a woman not his wife, there is no way to prove the photograph is real. As we know, the craft of digital retouching has advanced to the point where a 'photograph' can represent anything whatever. It could show my client in bed with your honor. "To be sure, digital retouching is still a somewhat expensive process. A blackand-white photo like this, and the negative it's made from, might cost a few thousand dollars to concoct as fiction, but considering my client's social position and the financial stakes of this case, the cost of the technique is irrelevant here. If your honor prefers, the defense will state that this photograph is a fake, but that is not necessary. The photograph COULD be a fake; no one can prove it isn't; therefore it cannot be admitted as evidence. "Photography has no place in this or any other courtroom. For that matter, neither does film, videotape, or audio- tape, in case the plaintiff plans to introduce in widence other media susceptible to digital retouching. " -Some lawyer, any day now STEWART BRAND: Time magazine does it. USA Today does it. Notional Geographic does it and has caught some flak about it. Very soon nearly everyone will do it, and the culture will be different as a result. They all use high-tech page makeup processes that involve turning photographs into computer data. -

VFW Into 2007 Or Even Beyond, but I Didn’T Expect It to Mutate from a Two-To-Four Page Local Newszine Into a Full-Fledged Genzine with a Huge Worldwide Readership
1 This is the 100th Vegas Fandom Weekly. That surprises me even more than it does you. I’ve never done 100 of any fanzine. Whim has often ruled my fanac and once I feel I’ve met the challenge of one project, I begin to divert energy to the next one. Almost before I notice, I’ve stopped one fanzine and started another. Yet here I am, ready to follow Brad Foster’s front-cover injunction to celebrate 100 issues. Actually, I might have been willing to make an optimistic prediction about continuing VFW into 2007 or even beyond, but I didn’t expect it to mutate from a two-to-four page local newszine into a full-fledged genzine with a huge worldwide readership. That weekly schedule — The zine’s slogan called it “sorta weekly” even when it came out weekly for well over a year — is just a memory, but the average issue is now 28 pages. Truthfully, it’s more like a powerful drug. Right now, I simply can’t imagine not producing more issues. I have ideas for other fanzines I’d like to try, but VFW shows no sign of loosening its grip on my fanpublishing. Frankly, I can’t even bring myself to change the zine’s name. I have this waking nightmare that world climate change will one day force me to move somewhere else and that I will leave Core Fandom for an obsession with metal detecting or something else of that ilk — but I’ll still be producing regular issues of something that isn’t “Vegas,” “Fandom” or “Weekly” under the same old logo. -
