The announcement of the 2012 inductees of the KPMG South Australian Sport Hall of Fame was conducted at KPMG Headquarters on October 11. The five new inductees including Rachael were named in the presence of His Excellency Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce AC CSC RANR Governor of South Australia. The five inductees for 2012 are: Rachael Sporn (Basketball) Russell Ebert OAM (SANFL) Alex Tobin OAM (Football Federation) Charlie Walsh OAM (Coach) Neil Fuller OAM (Paralympics) These outstanding South Australian sports stars join the prestigious group of 30 inductees in the KPMG South Australian Sport Hall of Fame including two teams from 2010 and 2011. Previous basketball inductees include Phil Smyth and the Lightning team RACHAEL between 1994 -1996 (of which Rachael was a member). South Australian Referee Phil Haines recently returned from the London Paralympic Games, and after an outstanding tournament, Phil was rewarded with officiating the Men’s Bronze Medal Game (now is the time we’ll mention that Phil was automatically excluded from officiating a Gold Medal game because Australia played in both finals and it is not permitted to referee your own country at these levels!) Just some of his achievements to note (the list is too long!!): 100 plus NBL games 2001 Youth Olympics 2010 U17 Men’s World Championships in Germany 2011 U19 Men’s World Championships in Latvia Been overseas with FIBA Wheelchair Basketball five times for zone qualifying, World Championships and the Paralympics Luckily for us Phil continues his involvement in South Australia as a referee coach, as a mentor to some of the younger referees working their way through the ranks, as well as continuing to referee Division 1 State League when his other commitments permit.

  • Shawn Redhage
    Shawn Redhage Captain of the Perth Wildcats Born in Florida Shawn grew up in Nebraska USA and is now a naturalised Australian professional basketball player. He currently plays for Perth Wildcats in the Australian National Basketball League and has been captain of the team since 2009. He is one of the top players in the Australian NBL and was voted into the Top Five Most Valuable Players List in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010. In the United States, Shawn received the Nebraska Player of the Year Award in 1998/99 after a stunning senior year with Nebraska State High School. After high school, Shawn began studying and playing for Arizona State University and helped lead the team to their 4th NCAA tournament appearance in the last 30 years and graduated with honors in Construction Management. Shawn became a professional basketball player in 2004 when he moved to Australia and played in the SEABL for the NW Tasmania Thunder. He was instrumental in SEABL’s championship and was awarded MVP (Most Valuable Player) honours in the League and Club. He began his NBL career in September 2004 with the New Zealand Breakers but was released mid-season after playing only 13 games, when the Breakers decided to sign veteran import Marcus Timmons. Shawn returned to SEABL to play for Bendigo Braves after his departure from the Breakers. In his time with the Braves he led them to the National Championship while claiming his second league MVP award averaging a league best average of 35 points per game. Shawn joined the Perth Wildcats in 2005, where he instantly made an impact and earned the nickname of The Scoring Machine on his way to finishing second for the league MVP award.
