The new species is distinguished from all congeners by the presence in males of bony hooks on the caudal fin rays (vs. absence). The different layers of pigment that constitute the humeral spots have differing degrees of development and structure that are independent of each other. Brown melanophores are distributed in a thin, vertical, superficial layer of the epithelium (layer 1) and in another deeper (layer 2) that overlaps the first and is centered over the lateral–line. B. ecuadorensis has a horizontally oval or elliptical shape layer 2 pigment in the anterior humeral spot (vs. a rectangular or circular layer 2). The new species further differs in having an anterior extension of the caudal peduncle spot (vs. no anterior extension of the caudal peduncle spot) and by having a dark lateral stripe overlaid by the peduncular spot and by the regularly distributed pigmentation on scales on the sides of the body (vs. -

Neotropical Ichthyology, 5(3):251-257, 2007 Copyright © 2007 Sociedade Brasileira de Ictiologia A new species of Hemibrycon (Teleostei: Characiformes: Characidae) from the río Ucayali drainage, Sierra del Divisor, Peru Vinicius A. Bertaco*, Luiz R. Malabarba*,**, Max Hidalgo*** and Hernán Ortega*** A new characid species, Hemibrycon divisorensis, is described from the río Ucayali drainage, Loreto, Peru. The new species is distinguished from all Hemibrycon species by the presence of a wide black asymmetrical spot covering base of caudal-fin rays and extending along entire length of caudal-fin rays 9 to 12-13 (except from H. surinamensis), and a black band in the lower half of the caudal peduncle extending from the region above the last anal-fin rays to the caudal-fin base. Furthermore, it is distinguished from most species of the genus by the number of scale rows below the lateral line (4-5 vs 5-9), except H. jabonero, H. microformaa, H. orcesi, and H. surinamensis. It differs from these species by scale and fin ray counts and color pattern. The lack of a supraorbital in Hemibrycon species is discussed and confirmed. In this dissertation, I endeavored to broaden our understanding of complex ecosystems through research conducted on the Cinaruco River, a floodplain river in Venezuela, with specific emphasis on how a human-induced perturbation, commercial netting activity, may affect food web structure and function. The new species are distinguished from other congeners by meristic and morphometric characters, such as the number of cusps in the premaxillary and dentary teeth, the number of scale series between dorsal-fin origin and lateral line, the orbital diameter and the body depth. With the two new species, the number of endemic species in the upper rio Tocantins basin upstream of the mouth of the rio Paranã, rises to 53 (89 to the confluence with rio Araguaia). Bryconamericus patriciae differs from other Bryconamericus species from southern South America, by the following combination of characters: body depth (25.5-30.3% SL); head length (25.2-27.6% SL); pelvic-fin length (11.0-14.4% SL); branched anal-fin rays 14-18; teeth of outer row of premaxilla regularly implanted; teeth of inner row of premaxilla pentacuspid; teeth compressed distally; and males with bony hooks on pelvic and anal fins. Bryconamericus ecai differs from other Bryconamericus species from southern South America by the following combination of characters: body depth (33.1-36.9% SL); eye diameter (31.1-33.9% HL); snout length (26.8-32.4% HL); branched anal-fin rays 15-18; teeth of outer row of premaxilla regularly implanted; teeth of inner row of premaxilla tricuspid or pentacuspid; teeth compressed distally; and males with bony hooks on pelvic and anal fins. Duas novas espécies de Bryconamericus são descritas do sul do Brasil: Bryconamericus patriciae, que habita as cabeceiras dos rios Pelotas (drenagem do rio Uruguay) e Antas (drenagem da laguna dos Patos) e Bryconamericus ecai do baixo rio Taquari. Bryconamericus patriciae difere de seus congêneres que ocorrem no sul da América do Sul pela seguinte combinação de caracteres: altura do corpo (25,5-30,3% CP); comprimento da cabeça (25,2-27,6% CP); comprimento da nadadeira pélvica (11,0-14,4% CP); nadadeira anal com 14-18 raios ramificados; dentes da série externa do pré-maxilar regularmente implantados; dentes da série interna do pré-maxilar pentacuspidados; dentes comprimidos distalmente; e nadadeiras pélvicas e anal dos machos com ganchos ósseos. -

In this study, I investigated the reproductive biology of fish species from the family Characidae of the order Characiformes. I also investigated the relationship between reproductive biology and body weight and interpreted this relationship in a phylogenetic context. The results of the present study contribute to the understanding of the evolution of the reproductive strategies present in the species of this family. Most larger characid species and other characiforms exhibit a reproductive pattern that is generally characterized by a short seasonal reproductive period that lasts one to three months, between September and April. This is accompanied by total spawning, an extremely high fecundity, and, in many species, a reproductive migration. Many species with lower fecundity exhibit some form of parental care. Although reduction in body size may represent an adaptive advantage, it may also require evolutionary responses to new biological problems that arise. In terms of reproduction, smaller species have a tendency to reduce the number of oocytes that they produce. Many small characids have a reproductive pattern similar to that of larger characiforms. On the other hand they may also exhibit a range of modifications that possibly relate to the decrease in body size and the consequent reduction in fecundity.
