The first verse relates the events of Genesis, Chapter 3. The second verse narrates the fall of humanity following Adam’s temptation. The third verse suggests redemption by the birth of . The British Library dates the work to ca.1400, and speculates that the lyrics may have belonged to a wandering minstrel. It is likely some of these early texts were used in medieval Mystery Plays, representations of stories set in churches as tableaux. These scenes included a group of suit- ably costumed actors or artist’s models, carefully posed and often theatrically lit. Settings of this text are often used as a response to the First Lesson in the Service of , developed in the Anglican Church, and now common in churches throughout the United States. ThisFor three-part setting represents the fall of humanity through uneven metric shifts: Mary as the mother of Jesus through divine intervention (using compound duple meter) and the gratitude of humanity through the concluding duple meter. unlawfulpromotionalAdam lay ybounden Jerry Ulrich Middle English original Middle English converted Adam lay i-bowndyn, Adam lay ybounden, bowndyn in a bond, Bounden in a bond; Fowre thowsand wynter Four thousand winter, thowt he not to long Thought he not too long.
