  • The Twenty Greatest Music Concerts I've Ever Seen
THE TWENTY GREATEST MUSIC CONCERTS I'VE EVER SEEN Whew, I'm done. Let me remind everyone how this worked. I would go through my Ipod in that weird Ipod alphabetical order and when I would come upon an artist that I have seen live, I would replay that concert in my head. (BTW, since this segment started I no longer even have an ipod. All my music is on my laptop and phone now.) The number you see at the end of the concert description is the number of times I have seen that artist live. If it was multiple times, I would do my best to describe the one concert that I considered to be their best. If no number appears, it means I only saw that artist once. Mind you, I have seen many artists live that I do not have a song by on my Ipod. That artist is not represented here. So although the final number of concerts I have seen came to 828 concerts (wow, 828!), the number is actually higher. And there are "bar" bands and artists (like LeCompt and Sam Butera, for example) where I have seen them perform hundreds of sets, but I counted those as "one," although I have seen Lecompt in "concert" also. Any show you see with the four stars (****) means they came damn close to being one of the Top Twenty, but they fell just short. So here's the Twenty. Enjoy and thanks so much for all of your input. And don't sue me if I have a date wrong here and there.

Our apartment, across from Rittenhouse Square, was near the Philadelphia Art Museum, the Liberty Bell, Theaters, Symphony, Restaurants, The Latin Casino, small folk clubs and Dick Clark’s American Bandstand. The excitement of the city, its people, food and music were my inspiration and motivation to pioneer the growth of San Diego’s downtown community—especially the Gaslamp Quarter. Starting when I was eight years old, I worked at my Grandmother Mary’s dress store in South Philadelphia. After school I helped the seamstresses sew and steam clothes, I sat by the cash register and watched my grandmother collect the money, and I happily assisted in the selection of the latest fashions on our buying trips to New York City. My mother Shirley, "The Magic Lady” played piano on her own local television show. In addition to being young, sexy and glamorous, she had this wonderful passion for cooking amazing meals and throwing spectacular parties at the drop of a hat. I learned to cook with her and started singing in local Ingrid & her twin sister Phyllis. clubs and on television by the time I was ten. My father, Sidney Jacobson was a general practitioner with his medical office in our home. By the age of fifteen I was employed as the “junior art therapist” assisting my dad at the University of Pennsylvania where he did his residency and began his psychiatric practice.

  • THE SONGWRITER: ADAPTING to the 60'S & 70'S
6 THE SONGWRITER: ADAPTING TO THE 60's & 70's Frank Mayo The intention of the songwriter changed dramatically from the 1960's to and through the 1970's. The internal and ex- ternal struggles of America during these two decades played a key role in motivating the songwriter to not only resound his message, but to also find that formula for success--the hit song! It would seem imperative to chronologically review the attitudenal changes of Americans during these twenty years, and even more imperative to start with and note the significance of the Kennedy administration and assassination. Althqugh the threat and influence of Communism pre-occupied the fears of many Americans--the effects of McCarthyism still lingering-- the country felt relatively secure under its leader. Information gathered by the Gallup Poll during the early. sixties revealed an almost naive outlook that Americans had concerning the future. The results of a poll released August 29, 1962 indicat- ed that 55% of the people polled believed that life would get better as the sixties progressed; 69% believed that there would be no serious racial trouble in the succeeding two or three years. 1 There was virtually no discussion of the Viet Nam cirsis, and the leadership of John Kennedy and the Democrats remained convincingly popular throughout the President's short lived administration. 7 However, when President Kennedy died on November 22, 1963, so died with him the concepts of Idealism and Nationalism that were known prior. The country was marked for change--radical change. Again, information gathered by opinion polls throughout the remainder of the decade reflected- a dramatic change in the attitudes of Americans.

  • Capturing That Solid-Gold Nugget
Chapter 1 Capturing That Solid-Gold Nugget In This Chapter ▶ Gathering song ideas from anywhere ▶ Organizing and tracking your thoughts and inspirations ▶ Documenting your ideas his book is for everyone who shares the dream of harnessing the song- Twriting power we all have within. You’ve come to the right place if your heart keeps telling you to write a song, but your mind is uncertain as to the process of the craft or what’s required to create a really good song. You bought the right book if you’re wondering how to collect and organize your ideas. You have found the right resource if you have pieces of songs lying in notebooks and on countless cassettes but can’t seem to put the pieces together. This book is for you if you have racks of finished song demos but don’t know what to do next to get them heard. When you know the elements that make up a great song and how the pros go about writing one, you can get on the right path to creating one of your own. Unless you’re lucky enough to have fully finished songs come to you in your deepest dreams, or to somehow take dictation from the ghosts of Tin Pan Alley (the publishing area located in New York City in the 1930s and 1940s), most of us need to summon the forces, sources, reasons, and seasons that give us the necessary motivation to draw a song from our heart of hearts. Given that initial spark, you then need the best means of gathering those ideas, organizing them, putting them into form, and documenting them as they roll COPYRIGHTEDin — before it’s too late and they MATERIAL roll right out again! Have you ever noticed how you can remember a powerful dream just after you’ve awakened only for it to vanish into thin air in the light of day? Song ideas can be just as illusive.
