Beckett 1 Chapter One: Origins to 1603 Although it is generally accepted that a truly national system of defence originated in England with the first militia statutes of 1558, there are continuities with earlier defence arrangements. One Edwardian historian claimed that the origins of the militia lay in the forces gathered by Cassivelaunus to oppose Caesar’s second landing in Britain in 54 BC. 1 This stretches credulity but military obligations or, more correctly, common burdens imposed on able bodied freemen do date from the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of the seventh and eight centuries. The supposedly resulting fyrd - simply the old English word for army - was not a genuine ‘nation in arms’ in the way suggested by Victorian historians but much more of a selective force of nobles and followers serving on a rotating basis. 2 The celebrated Burghal Hidage dating from the reign of Edward the Elder sometime after 914 AD but generally believed to reflect arrangements put in place by Alfred the Great does suggest significant ability to raise manpower at least among the West Saxons for the garrisoning of 30 fortified burghs on the basis of men levied from the acreage apportioned to each burgh. 3 In theory, it is possible that one in every four of all able-bodied men were liable for such garrison service. 4 Equally, while most surviving documentation dates only from 1 G. CHURCH BELLS BY THE REV. ROBERT EATON BATTY, M.A. The Church Bell — what a variety of associations does it kindle up — how closely is it connected with the most cherished interests of mankind! And not only have we ourselves an interest in it, but it must have been equally interesting to those who were before us, and will pro- bably be so to those who are yet to come. It is the Churchman's constant companion — at its call he first enters the Church, then goes to the Daily Liturgy, to his Con- firmation, and his first Communion. Is he married? — the Church bells have greeted him with a merry peal — has he passed to his rest? — the Church bells have tolled out their final note. From a very early period there must have been some contrivance, whereby the people might know when to assemble themselves together, but some centuries must have passed before bells were invented for a religious purpose. Trumpets preceded bells. The great Day of Atonement amongst the Jews was ushered in with the sound of the trumpet; and Holy Writ has stamped a solemn and lasting character upon this instrument, when it informs us that "The Trumpet shall sound and the dead shall be raised." The Prophet Hosea was com- manded to "blow the cornet in Gibeah and the trumpet in Ramah;" and Joel was ordered to "blow the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm." The cornet and trumpet seem to be identical, as in the Septuagint both places are expressed by σαλπισατε σαλπιγγι. -

The M40 and A34 main roads are easily accessed from Bicester and provide access to the wider network including Oxford and London. Buckingham is located just 9 miles to the north. Land and Buildings at Lower Farm The farm extends to approximately 326 acres as a whole and comprises level and productive arable and temporary grassland (187.37 acres), permanent pasture (119.73 acres) and mixed woodland (9.76 acres) with a good range of farm buildings located on the southern boundary. The farm is ring fenced with good road access points on the eastern, southern and western boundaries and infield gateways throughout. -

THE EVOLUTION OF TRAIN SERVICES ON THE MET AND GC LINE by Eric Stuart (Readers may find reference to the Four-Tracking article in the July 2018 issue of Underground News helpful) After the Great Central (GC) arrived at Quainton Road and the service south thereof became established, both the GC and the Metropolitan Railway (Met.) provided services. However, the personalities at the heads of the two companies did not enjoy the best of relationships. Matters came to a head when a GC train crashed when failing to reduce speed over the (then) reverse curve into Aylesbury station in 1904. About that time, both the leaders retired and a period of better relations between the companies began. On 2 April 1906, the Metropolitan & Great Central Joint Railway (MGCJR) was created. This latter took over the lines of the Metropolitan Railway north and west of Harrow South Junction, with the exception of the branch to Uxbridge. These included the main line between Harrow-on-the-Hill and Verney Junction and the branch from Chalfont & Latimer to Chesham. The MGCJR was created under the terms of the Metropolitan & Great Central Railway Act, which received Royal Assent on 4 August 1905. At the same time, the Great Central and Great Western Joint Railway was formed, covering the lines south of Aylesbury via Princes Risborough to Northolt Junction. This was the result of a new line that aided the GC by partly avoiding congestion on the Met. and also giving the Great Western a shorter route to Birmingham1. One curiosity was that a Joint Committee was set up to manage a new Aylesbury station, jointly owned by two joint railways! Some points on terminology: The new line was commonly called just ‘The Joint Line’ and, even in later LT days, some staff still belonged to a particular class that made them feel superior to others2. -

I wanted to start by thanking everyone who took the time to read and share the last issue of the newsletter. We have seen an increase in the readership of the newsletter and have received feedback on the format with the level of information in the local update sections we introduced in issue two being positive. As you’ll read below, perhaps the most obvious progress we have made since the last newsletter can be seen in Bletchley, where our team has dismantled sections of the Bletchley Flyover ready for it to be rebuilt to modern standards. For 200m of its length it has no footway forcing pedestrians to walk in the road which has all sizes of vehicular traffic passing along it. many vehicles are travelling in excess of this, but in any case, if a pedestrian or horse gets hit by a vehicle travelling at 30 mph, the chances are they/it will be killed (as one horse in recent years has been). As it is prohibitively expensive, due to housing on the West side, and a steep bank containing utilities on the East side to construct a footway, we are seeking to traffic calm this section of road in order to make it much safer for all pedestrians, horse riders and cyclists by reducing average speeds. Data from our MVAS show average traffic speeds along Ivy Lane and Manor Hill are well above 30mph well into the 30 mph zones, none of these sections of road have footways. TfB have carried out a feasibility study for traffic calming within Great Brickhill village. The proposed design incorporates many of the features previously mentioned whilst ensuring to maintain Great Brickhill’s rural character. -
