The project started in 2009 and over the course of writing this thesis, many people in different ways have helped and supported me. Not only with the research, interviews and contacts at various times and locations, but also with background support for a process that took longer and was more complicated than I originally anticipated. I would like to take this opportunity to say thanks to many of them. My interest for the topic originated from looking for a subject for my MSc thesis in 2007. During a debate in ‘Hotel de Wereld’ in Wageningen, I met Prem Bindraban who (quite spontaneously) invited me to join his research sabbatical in Brazil. Just two-and-a-half weeks later our adventure in Brazil began. During this trip we visited many people and projects varying from farmers, researchers, government officials and multi-stakeholder initiatives. We discovered the broad variety of the country and its very kind people. Therefore, thank you Prem for this amazing opportunity! We met during my first trip when you were appointed to show me around the WUR campus in Piracicaba and were finishing your own thesis. Many of these species pose a direct threat to food security with progressive socio-economic perils affecting the livelihoods of people. The National Plant Protection Organisation of a country is vested with legislative powers to prevent the incursion of such species through the implementation of proactive measures such as risk assessments, monitoring, surveillance and controlling human-aided pathways. The unfortunate event of an unwanted incursion brings with it challenges of early detection and immediate implementation of eradication measures which are further compounded by capability gaps and funding constraints. The success of eradication is more than often determined by quick execution of appropriate emergency response measures and flexibility to scale operations when needed. Even with extensive and exhaustive eradication efforts applied, many-a-times the National Plant Protection Organizations face unfavourable results.

The above requires the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, the utilization of wastes, and the use of renewable energy sources. The most promising way is the use of methanol for industrial and transport applications. China is experiencing a boom in methanol production and its use in almost every sector of the economy. The purpose of this study was to reveal economic benefits, carbon dioxide emissions and the potential production of green methanol. Fuel price history, energy costs and fuel economy were used for economic assessment. Life cycle analysis to evaluate carbon dioxide emissions was applied. It was revealed that only the use of green methanol as a fuel results in decreases in well-to-wheel CO2 emissions compared to fossil fuels.

Biofuels are examples of sources of bioenergy that seek to meet the social demand in the development and establishment of concepts in the generation of new industrial technologies. In this work, information was sought from different research sources, related to the historical context of the evolution of biodiesel production with emphasis on the perspectives of the raw materials that have been most researched today, such as macauba, microalgae, sewage sludge and residual oils. Such raw materials do not compete with food production; some have great environmental advantages, such as oil residue that stops being deposited in sewers to become an alternative fuel source. In order for these alternative resources to soy to be viable for the production of biodiesel on a large scale, it is increasingly necessary to encourage public and private sector policies to insert these biomasses into the biofuel market.
