Originally released by Ace in 1974 In 1973 I was sharing a one-room bedsit in Camden with my girlfriend (now my wife) Kathy. The band I’d been with for the last 5 years since leaving home and going on the road had finally returned from Germany broke after having our equipment stolen. I reluctantly got a job cleaning cars at Henley’s Cars for the princely sum of 42 pence an hour. When the initial novelty of doing ‘real work’ with overalls and everything, wore off (after about a week) I was thoroughly miserable, apart from the fact that Kathy and I were madly in love. At some point I got a call from Tex Comer, the bass player in the aforementioned band.

About a year and a half lat- er, we started working on what would eventually become our biggest release, Twin Cities Funk & Soul: Lost R&B Grooves From Minneapolis/St. Paul 1964-1979. What follows is our attempt to share with you some of the amazing stories, history, and photos that have been so gracious- ly shared with us during the course of producing a compilation of soulful tunes from our hometown. ..... R&B, soul, and funk music in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota went through dra- matic changes during the 1960s and 1970s. Predating these changes, a vibrant jazz scene beginning in the 1920s laid the groundwork with several players being instrumental in helping teach young local R&B mu- sicians how to play. However, many of the early R&B pioneers, including Mojo Buford, Maurice McKin- nies, and Willie Walker, came to Minnesota from other states and brought the music with them.

This article analyses ways that place has been made to function as a meaningful unit in the music and lyrics of several artists living and working in Berlin, localising the transnational klezmer revival discourse by rooting the city in their music. Building on Adam Krims’ theory of ‘urban ethos’, I explore how the contemporary city is emplaced in its klezmer music, arguing that these processes of signification allow us to hear contrasting articulations of Berlin.

"Let the world hear your resilience," Pharrell Williams told a sell- out crowd of 50,000 who had gathered to remember vic- tims of a May 22 suicide bomb attack on Grande's concert in the city. The hastily-organized "One Love Manchester" event became one of the biggest single gatherings of musical talent this year, as stars lined-up for the concert dedicated to the 22 people killed and 116 injured, many of them children. Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Robbie Williams, Take That, Liam Gallagher, and Little Mix were among those who hit the stage, as fans held "We stand together" and "For our angels" signs. Mumford & Sons frontman Marcus Mumford opened the show after the crowd fell silent for a minute. Less than 24 hours before the concert got underway, Britain was rocked by another terrorist attack, in central London, in which seven people were killed and 48 injured.

FLORIDA MUSIC EDUCATORS CONVENTION 2014 “Essentials of Performance Quality – The Assessment of Musical Detail” “UNDERSTANDING THE FBA CONCERT ASSESSMENT SHEET AND SUGGESTIONS ON HOW TO ACHIEVE SUCCESS WITH YOUR MUSICIANS” SPONSORSED BY THE FLORIDA CHAPTER OF: AMERICAN SCHOOL BAND DIRECTORS ASSOCIATION CLINICIANS: Mr. Jason Duckett – Band Director – Bartram Trail High School Mr. Ivan Wansley – Adjunct Faculty – Florida Southern College Friday – January 10, 2014 Room – TCC 17 Common sense should dictate that to achieve success in an assessment situation, one needs to have a strong understanding on the evaluative tool. Then of course the educator must focus on having the ability to express this understanding to their musicians. BASIC FUNDAMENTALS: • TONE QUALITY – “The character of the sound achieved in performance on an instrument” – “The quality of sound that distinguishes one instrument from another” Harvard Dictionary of Music Tone is the basic of all fundamentals – the most important aspect of any performance and the most important basic fundamental for all musicians to accomplish. “I do not teach adjustments, such as lip pressure or moving tuning slides, until after a student has learned how to use proper air support for the entire range of the instrument. Because a lack of proper air support and a poor tone color causes most gross intonation problems, I develop support first so I can tune up “good-tones,” rather than try to tune up “no tones!” Richard Putzier “Have your students “over blow” – put more air into the instrument than is really needed. It should make sense that the first job in achieving good tone is teaching the student how to use premium air – making sure the air is making it all the way through the instrument.
