Edit Did You Know? Trivia In this movie, the surname of Robby Benson 's character, Father Dave Benson, is the same as his real last name. Goofs When Wendell Lawson slams on his brakes next to the funeral procession in front of the Church, the shadow of the Church steeple and crucifix appear on his forehead. However in the cutaway to the Church, we clearly see there are no shadows anywhere on the face of the Church, indicating that the sun is in front of the Church and not behind it, thus unable to produce a shadow on Wendell. In addition the size of the shadow on Wendell's face was some inch. It could not be casted by a life size steeple but a small mock-up. He was giving voice in a rock 'n' roll setting to the Oedipus complex , at the time a widely discussed tendency in Freudian psychology. He wasn't saying he wanted to do that to his own mom and dad. He was re-enacting a bit of Greek drama. It was theatre! In John Densmore 's autobiography Riders on the Storm , he recalls when Morrison explained the meaning:. At one point Jim said to me during the recording session, and he was tearful, and he shouted in the studio, 'Does anybody understand me? Fuck the mother is very basic, and it means get back to essence, what is reality, what is, fuck the mother is very basically mother, mother-birth, real, you can touch it, it's nature, it can't lie to you. So what Jim says at the end of the Oedipus section, which is essentially the same thing that the classic says, kill the alien concepts, get back reality, the end of alien concepts, the beginning of personal concepts. Comprehensively wrecked, the singer [Morrison] wound up lying on the floor mumbling the words to his Oedipal nightmare, 'Fuck the mother, kill the father. Sent home by producer Paul A. Rothchild like a naughty schoolkid, he returned in the middle of the night, broke in, peeled off his clothes, yanked a fire extinguisher from the wall and drenched the studio. Alerted, Rothchild came back and persuaded the naked, foam-flecked Morrison to leave once more, advising the studio owner to charge the damage to Elektra. The genesis and the use of the word "fuck" is described by Michael Hicks as follows:. During this period, Morrison brought vocal ideas into the instrumental solo section. This was probably not a spontaneous vulgarism, but rather, a kind of quotation from another Doors song, "The End. The Pop Chronicles documentary reports that critics found the song " Sophoclean and Joycean. While the release of the song is the best-known version, there are other, slightly different versions available. Marilyn Manson recorded a cover version of "The End" for use on the soundtrack to the upcoming miniseries The Stand , [24] in which the eponymous vocalist will appear as the character " The Trashcan Man ". The track was released for digital download and on streaming services on November 22, , [22] [23] while the song was scheduled to be issued on a picture disc 7" vinyl [26] via Loma Vista Recordings on March 6, Manson had previously recorded a version of The Doors' song " Five to One ", [32] released as a b-side on their single " Disposable Teens ". Although "The End" stands as the last known new recording involving all four members of the Beatles, one additional song, " I Me Mine ", was recorded by three members of the group Lennon being absent due to having privately left in September in January for the album Let It Be. The compilation album Anthology 3 contains a remixed version of "The End", restoring tambourine and guitar overdubs mixed out of the original, and edited to emphasise the guitar solos and orchestral overdub. Paul opens with a characteristically fluid and melodically balanced line that sounds a high A before snaking an octave down the scale; George responds by soaring to an even higher D and sustaining it for half a bar before descending in syncopated pairs of 16th notes; John then picks upon the pattern of George's 16ths with a series of choppy thirds that hammer relentlessly on the second and flattened seventh degrees of the scale. The second time through, Paul answers John's blusey flattened 7ths with bluesy minor thirds and then proceeds to echo George's earlier line, spiraling up to that same high D; George responds with some minor thirds of his own, while mimicking the choppy rhythm of John's part; John then drops two octaves to unleash a growling single-note line. On this final two-bar solo, Paul plays almost nothing but minor thirds and flattened sevenths in a herky-jerky rhythm that ends with a sudden plunge to a low A; George then reaches for the stars with a steeply ascending line that is pitched an octave above any notes heard so far; and John finishes with a string of insistent and heavily distorted 4ths, phrased in triplets, that drag behind the beat and grate against the background harmony. Richie Unterberger of AllMusic considered "The End" to be "the group's take on the improvised jamming common to heavy rock of the late '60s, though as usual The Beatles did it with far more economic precision than anyone else.
