Club VOLUME 23, ISSUE 5 NewsOCTOBER, 2014

Inside News Dear Members,

September was full of good times plus the beginning of Fall. Many of you attended the University Women’s Club Fall Luncheon and enjoyed the music of Juan Carlos Zamudio and the QV Chamber Ensemble. It was also an opportunity to sign up for Interest Groups from the 15 that were offered to you. Some of the groups had meetings in September but most are in full swing in October. The Annual Welcome Reception featured our special guest, Robby Benson and his wife Karla DeVito. If you were lucky enough to obtain a ticket to watch Kevin Kline receive an honorary degree from IU at a ceremony in the IU Auditorium, you saw Robby and Karla on stage to introduce him!

University Club Co-President, Kate Kroll, with Robby Benson and Karla DeVito

Spirits were high as the well-heeled, and sold out, crowd at the University Club’s Welcome Reception eagerly anticipated the arrival of special guests, Robby Benson and Karla DeVito. The reception is the annual kick-off celebration to launch another year of dazzling and delightful programs, special events, and speaker luncheons at the UClub. Always a grand affair, this year’s soiree was no exception. Every- one thoroughly enjoyed themselves and raved about the delicious hors d’oeurves provided by our at Meadowood. UClub Co-President Kate Kroll, gave the couple a terrific introduction by sharing some little-known facts about Robby and citing Karla’s life motto, “There is no future in specialization.” You said it Karla! Robby and Karla charmed guests with their funny, and warm-hearted, stories of how they met and their adventures in show business. Afterward they patiently answered questions from the crowd and posed for pictures. It was a delightful evening.

Thank you Robby & Karla — welcome to the University Club!

October's birth flower is the pumpkin bloom!

Just kidding—it's actually the marigold. Marigolds are often given as a sign of warm or fierce, undying love, or as a way of saying that you're content with being with the recipient. The other October flower is cosmo, a symbol of order, peace, and serenity.

Be Our Guest

Be Our Guest is the invitation the University Club extends to individuals who have never been a University Club member. This invitation gives folks a special incentive to attend an event for FREE and become familiar with the club. Anyone can Be Our Guest There is no obligation to become a member but we are confident that once a person has a taste of the club, they will be eager to join. This is also an excellent way for current members to introduce a member prospect to the club. All a person needs to do is call the club at 812-855-1325 to be added to the participant list for our “regular speaker luncheons” held at the club.

October 14 - US Trade Policy

By Michael O. Moore and Robert Maxim

America's foreign policy tools are not limited to sanctions, treaties or military campaigns - they also include the sales pitch. The logic behind this pitch, or "economic statecraft," is simple: promote the benefits of democ- racy and the free market. In so doing, the U.S. will gain valuable and stable partners, both in business and in diplomacy. Now, as China and other emerging nations battle the U.S. for global influence, Secretary Kerry will take the reigns as a free market matchmaker.

Speaker Luncheons: Payment for a luncheon entitles you to 2 hours free parking in the IMU Lot 1 and Lot 2. As has always been the case, if you would like to hear the speakers, but cannot make the lunch, you are more than welcome to join in and sit on a comfortable chair and listen. Speakers usually start about 12:15 p.m. and go to approximately 1:00 p.m. or shortly thereafter.
