The analysis begins with dramatic concerns, where musico-dramatic intensity analysis graphs show the relationship between music and drama, and how one may affect the interpretation of events in the other. These graphs also show hierarchical recursion in both music and drama. The focus of the analysis then switches to how Sondheim uses traditional accompaniment schemata, but also stretches the schemata into patterns that are distinctly of his voice; particularly in the use of the waltz in four, developing accompaniment, and emerging meter. Sondheim shows his harmonic voice in how he juxtaposes treble and bass lines, creating diagonal dissonances.

SECRET SUPERSTARS AND OTHERWORLDLY WIZARDS: Gender Biased Hiding of Extraordinary Abilities in Girl-Powered Disney Channel Sitcoms from the 2000s By © 2017 Christina H. Hodel M.A., New York University, 2008 B.A., California State University, Long Beach, 2006 Submitted to the graduate degree program in Film and Media Studies and the Graduate Faculty of the University of Kansas in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Chair: Germaine Halegoua, Ph.D. Joshua Miner, Ph.D. Catherine Preston, Ph.D. Ronald Wilson, Ph.D. Alesha Doan, Ph.D. Date Defended: 18 November 2016 The dissertation committee for Christina H. Hodel certifies that this is the approved version of the following dissertation: SECRET SUPERSTARS AND OTHERWORLDLY WIZARDS: Gender Biased Hiding of Extraordinary Abilities in Girl-Powered Disney Channel Sitcoms from the 2000s Chair: Germaine Halegoua, Ph.D. Date Approved: 25 January 2017 ii ABSTRACT Conformity messaging and subversive practices potentially harmful to healthy models of feminine identity are critical interpretations of the differential depiction of the hiding and usage of tween girl characters’ extraordinary abilities (e.g., super/magical abilities and celebrity powers) in Disney Channel television sitcoms from 2001-2011. Male counterparts in similar programs aired by the same network openly displayed their extraordinariness and were portrayed as having considerable and usually uncontested agency. These alternative depictions of differential hiding and secrecy in sitcoms are far from speculative; these ideas were synthesized from analyses of sitcom episodes, commentary in magazine articles, and web-based discussions of these series. Content analysis, industrial analysis (including interviews with industry personnel), and critical discourse analysis utilizing the multi-faceted lens of feminist theory throughout is used in this study to demonstrate a unique decade in children’s programming about super powered girls.

TITOLO Mary Poppins REGIA Robert Stevenson INTERPRETI Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke, David Tomlinson, Glynis Johns, Hermione Baddeley, Reta Shaw, Karen Dotrice, Matthew Garber, Elsa Lanchester GENERE Commedia DURATA 138 min. No, non lo so". "Dovresti stare più attento a quello che mangi!" Uno dei massimi successi della Disney, un film che il tempo non sembra aver logorato. Personaggi dal vivo, disegni animati, canzoni e musiche formano un "mix" eccellente, tenuto in perfetto equilibrio dal regista. Scintillante Julie Andrews, al suo esordio, premiata con l'Oscar. Il film è stato tratto dal libro di P.L.

Audience Guide Written and compiled by Jack Marshall Theater you can afford to see— plays you can’t afford to miss! About The American Century Theater The American Century Theater was founded in 1994. We are a professional company dedicated to presenting great, important, but overlooked American plays of the twentieth century . what Henry Luce called “the American Century.” The company’s mission is one of rediscovery, enlightenment, and perspective, not nostalgia or preservation. Americans must not lose the extraordinary vision and wisdom of past playwrights, nor can we afford to surrender our moorings to our shared cultural heritage. Our mission is also driven by a conviction that communities need theater, and theater needs audiences. To those ends, this company is committed to producing plays that challenge and move all Americans, of all ages, origins and points of view. In particular, we strive to create theatrical experiences that entire families can watch, enjoy, and discuss long afterward. These audience guides are part of our effort to enhance the appreciation of these works, so rich in history, content, and grist for debate. The American Century Theater is a 501(c)(3) professional nonprofit theater company dedicated to producing significant 20th Century American plays and musicals at risk of being forgotten. This program is supported in part by Arlington County through the Arlington Commission for the Arts and Arlington Cultural Affairs, a division of Arlington Economic Development; the Virginia Commission for the Arts; the National Endowment for the Arts; the Arlington Community Foundation; and many generous donors. An Evening with Danny Kaye is supported in part by a grant from The McElwaine-Stroock Fund of the Jewish Communal Fund, made in memory of Robert M.

  • Individualism and National Identity in Disney's Early British Films
1 Noel Brown Individualism and National Identity in Disney’s Early British Films Abstract This article centres on a series of live-action Disney movies filmed and set in Britain, and released between the early-1950s and late-1960s: The Story of Robin Hood and His Merrie Men (1952), The Sword and the Rose (1953), Rob Roy, The Highland Rogue (1953), Kidnapped (1960), and The Fighting Prince of Donegal (1966). Through close analysis of this group of films, it examines the extent to which these Anglo-American productions successfully negotiate a mid-Atlantic path between British and North American customs and ideologies, arguing that, while derived from British historical, literary and folktale narratives, ultimately they reflect and embody complex and characteristically American values of freedom and individualism. Keywords Disney, individualism, national identity, 1950s, Britain 2 Noel Brown With the release of Treasure Island (dir. Byron Haskin) in 1950, Disney embarked upon a programme of live-action feature films shot in Britain, and with British subjects. Treasure Island marked the beginning of a very profitable and long-standing preoccupation with ‘Britishness’ for the studio and for its founder, Walt Disney. Representations of Britain and Britishness are recurring presences in many of the studio’s animated films between the 1950s and 1970s, including Alice in Wonderland (Clyde Geronimi et al., 1951), Peter Pan (Geronimi et al., 1953), The Jungle Book (Wolfgang Reitherman et al., 1967), and Robin Hood (Reitherman et al., 1973). Moreover, Disney’s strong interest in Britain extended to filming 15 of its movies in the UK between 1950 and 1979.
