Hollywood Studios - Extra Magic Hour (EMH) Strategy last updated 02/13/20 If you are eligible for Extra Magic Hour (EMH) and want to use them, it's a great idea! EMH are typically an extra hour in the morning or two extra hours at night for eligible guests staying on-property (or at one of the eligible hotels).

E MH Morning EMH AM for / Land: if you're up for being up early and don't have a FastPass for Slinky Dog Dash, EMH is the perfect time to go. You'll still need to "rope drop" and be there before EMH starts. Once you ride Slinky Dog Dash, head next door to ride (or skip), and then hit Toy Story Mania. Meet any characters here early if they're out!

EMH AM for Land: Smuggler's Run is the only ride available during EMH as of publishing. Star Wars fans may want to consider rope dropping Smuggler's Run - it's a neat experience to experience an emptier land and get Smuggler's Run "out of the way" for the day. Rise of the Resistance is still available only by Boarding Pass procedure. Droid and Light Saber building is available without a reservation during EMH if this is a priority for you. Young Jedis also want to make sure to sign up for Jedi Training during the EMH to secure their spot.

EMH AM for thrill rides: between and Star Wars Land now open at Hollywood Studios, the adjacent Rock n and Tower of Terror are seeing much shorter and easier lines in the morning. This is a great alternative if Star Wars or Toy Story Lands are not priorities for you and you don't want to mess with crowds or more intense rope drop scenarios listed above.

EMH AM for Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway: it's a longer ride, so it will take you a good chunk if not all of the EMH AM to complete this attraction. Since it's in the center of the park, simply check other standby waits after and go where you desire and lines are short.

EMH Evening

While they’re still likely to be some 30-60 minute waits during this time, it’s great to see these EMH night hours return. If you plan to attend EMH Evening, it's a good idea to plan and hit one of the Tier 1 attractions the last 30 minutes of EMH.

As far as strategy for these two hours of the night, I’d just keep an eye on posted wait times and head where you want, but here are some general tips:

Don’t plan on lower waits for Slinky Dog Dash except for the very beginning or end of the EMH. If you want to ride SDD and plan to stay the whole two hours, save it for absolute last. The only other likely time there will be a short wait is the first few minutes when the park is technically closed to the public - most people will be seeing Fantasmic or gearing up for firework viewing. If you don’t care about these, hit Slinky about ten minutes into EMH.

Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster and Tower of Terror will likely see an initial bump after Fantasmic! lets out - and the lines will be longer the half-hour following Fantasmic’s ending. However, these are great rides to save till the end of EMH, when others are in Toy Story Land and Galaxy’s Edge.

If I wanted to ride Smuggler’s Run during EMH, it’s probably what I’d hit right after seeing one of the nighttime shows.

Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway will likely have long lines through Summer 2020, but this will likely be another attraction to save towards middle or end of EMH.

Note: Rise of the Resistance is currently available only by Boarding Pass procedure and not available during EMH evening.
