Schumann, Chair People frequently display understanding of one another’s goals and actions in conversation. Aside from building a common ground necessary for conversation to take place, this intersubjective understanding can be a means for creating and maintaining social affiliation. For indigenous Mexican immigrants in the U.S., this interactional means of connecting with other members of their community is especially crucial given their marginalized status. This dissertation uses a conversation analysis approach to investigate the interactive construction of social affiliation in a community of indigenous Mexican immigrants in a Spanish-language literacy class in California. These immigrants are native speakers of the indigenous Mesoamerican language Mixtec, and are therefore learning to read and write for the first time in a second language. To uncover the role of social affiliation in this literacy classroom, I focus on the interactional features that contribute to and reveal shared sociocultural ii understanding — namely, the deployment of epistemic and empathic resources for cultural affiliation. Chapter 1 orients the reader to the study, provides rationale for and aims of the project, and states the project’s research questions. Chapter 2 surveys some of the relevant scholarship on language and social affiliation, drawing from the theoretical orientations of language socialization, sociocultural models of literacy acquisition, and conversation analysis (specifically as regards epistemics and empathic communication). Chapter 3 provides background information about the Mixtec community, including a very brief overview of the history Mixtec people in the U.S., the Mixtec language, and indigenous cultural orientations. Chapter 4 describes the methods used to collect and analyze the data (primarily ethnographic and conversation analytic), and recruitment procedures for the study participants. Chapter 5 begins the analysis portion of the dissertation, investigating repair sequences as resources for managing epistemic imbalances and building social affiliation. Chapter 6 turns our attention to empathy in this setting, focusing on assessments as resources for displaying and soliciting empathy. Chapter 7 treats both epistemics and empathy by way of analyzing instances of metalinguistic discourse in the classroom. (Each analysis chapter concludes with a section on implications of the findings for learning). Finally, Chapter 8 concludes the study and proposes some future directions in the same strain of research. To conduct this research, I engaged in long-term ethnographic study of the community and captured video-recordings of interactions whenever possible, which were transcribed and analyzed using conversation analysis methods. The study illustrates how epistemic and empathic resources serve not only to advance the progressivity of conversation but also to reveal and build sociocultural solidarity among a displaced community. iii As a study that investigates these particular communicative achievements within a specific community of practice, this dissertation addresses the “problem of intersubjectivity” — i.e., how people understand one another without direct access to others’ minds — as well as the understudied phenomena of adult literacy acquisition and indigenous immigrants’ experiences. Such an investigation, which uses epistemics and empathy as a point of departure from which to study the experiences of adult language-minority individuals in the literacy classroom, can illuminate both the particular experience of indigenous immigrants acquiring literacy, and the very universal endeavor to find common ground through social interaction. Moreover, this study illustrates the potential of ethnomethodological research for understanding how social structures and ideologies are constructed, quietly and continuously, through everyday social interaction. iv The dissertation of Adrienne Lynett is approved. LATESSA B.A. University of Vermont 2009 April 2014 Committee: David Edelman, Ph.D., Chair Jan Fritz, Ph.D. Abstract This study evaluates the potential for a peace park in the mountain range that delineates the border between Myanmar and Thailand, or the Tanintharyi Mountain Range. The Tanintharyi Mountain Range is delicate, socioeconomically, environmentally, and politically, with a long history of conflict. With Myanmar re-opening its border, an international network has begun discussing the possibility of designating the land for shared conservation. The work being done by this network includes scientific research and a stakeholder analysis. These findings help contextualize the diagnostic results and support the overall goal of this study: to assess the challenges and solutions for the prospective peace park. Translated versions of the Diagnostic Tool for Trans-boundary Conservation Planners, a questionnaire developed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), were created to collect results from stakeholders in the area who have the power to stop or start the initiative. These findings conveyed indicators of need, readiness, opportunities and threats for a shared conservation zone along the border. The logic and structure of this argument weaves through different disciplines and a large range of geographic and cultural contexts to address the varied nature of environmental conflict resolution.

D. Cornell University 2016 This dissertation examines three topics on network dynamics. The first topic is the polarization and politicization of the scientific consumption in the U.S.. Passionate disagreements about climate change, stem cell research, and evolution raise concerns that science has become a new battlefield in the culture wars. Data are derived from millions of online co-purchases as a behavioral indicator for whether a shared interest in science bridges political differences or selective attention reinforces existing divisions. Findings reveal partisan preferences both within and across scientific disciplines. The paper concludes that the political left and right share an interest in science in general, but not science in particular. The second paper examines the dynamics of organizational membership. A long line of research documents the essential role of social networks in mediating the recruitment and retention of members in organizations. But organizations also comprise a primary context where people form social ties. The paper investigates how the network structure that an organization creates among its members influences its ability to grow and reproduce itself. In particular, we propose that two dimensions of organizational strategy influence affiliation dynamics: (1) the extent to which the organization induces social interaction among its members (social encapsulation), and (2) the time and energy that the organization demands of its members.

We used light traps and conical drift nets to sample the fish larvae at two spatially separated sites from March through July 1997 and at four sites from February through August 1998. Native larvae occurred both earlier in the year and in higher abundance than those of introduced species. Both native larvae and overall numbers of larvae were more abundant at upstream sites in both years. Larval sampling appeared to be sensitive to the detection ofrare species. Drift nets and light traps collected similar numbers of larvae, but each method tended to select for different taxa.

    Policy Essay Heroic Centrism in a Time of Polarization William (Beau) Weston Van Winkle Professor of Sociology Centre College November 2020 Key Takeaways ► A robust centrist sociology illustrates how a strong “center of society” can enable the existence of happy, functional societies, embodying their core values while evolving to incorporate the various peripheries and thereby embrace new ideas. ► The “center” is where the most crucial values of modern societies are translated and made real in its central institutions. Institutions embody the central values of society imperfectly and conflict with each other regularly, but the center of society is strong to the extent that the central institutions work with one another to embody the central values even as they clash. ► Both centrism and moderation favor meliorism and incrementalism as a method of social change, but moderation does not set the course and lacks a positive program. Centrism creates and maintains elite consensus around the central values of society and holds elites to the larger task of incorporating the periphery. © Beau Weston, 2020.
