PRESS RELEASE the Twentieth National Theatre Production Of PRESS RELEASE SILVIA HRONCOVÁ Director of the National Theatre Opera and State Opera The twentieth National Theatre production of Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro – the very first staged by a woman Prague, 15 January 2018 Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro is one of the most popular operas of all time. The piece has been always been much loved in Prague in particular. During Mozart’s lifetime, its melodies were so cherished that they were sung not only on stage, but also in the streets of the city. For the first time in the history of the National Theatre, the opera has been undertaken by a woman - the renowned Czech director Magdalena Švecová. The National Theatre Orchestra and Chorus will be conducted by Italy’s Enrico Dovico. The role of Figaro will be performed by Miloš Horák, Jan Šťáva and František Zahradníček, Susanna will be portrayed by Yukiko Kinjo and Jana Sibera, the Countess by Marie Fajtová, Alžběta Poláčková and Jana Šrejma Kačírková, Count Almaviva by Jiří Hájek, Roman Janál and Adam Plachetka, our exclusive guest. Cherubino will be sung by Kateřina Jalovcová, Alžběta Vomáčková and Michaela Zajmi. Le nozze di Figaro is a brilliant opera buffa based on Pierre Beaumarchais’s comedy La Folle Journée, ou Le Mariage de Figaro. As the title of the play indicates, it depicts a mad day in the life of the servant Figaro and his beloved Susanna, the philandering Count Almaviva and his spouse. The intricate, entangled story of love in all its forms unfurls to Mozart’s splendid music. Magdalena Švecová will be the very first woman in the history of the National Theatre to direct a production of Le nozze di Figaro, thus presenting a female view of the forms and transformations of love, infidelity and jealousy, in what will be the 20th staging of the title by the National Theatre Opera. She has approached the work with the utmost respect: “I haven’t transferred the action to another time or milieu, our production will feature Rococo costumes, the stage will be lit by candles. We will employ all the means of Baroque theatre, yet we will try to imbue it with a sort of dreamy aspect, which will afford us the opportunity to apply a certain stylisation, as opera as a genre directly incites one to depict emotions. We have opted for ‘live classic’. One of the major facets of our adaptation is work with space - the story will take place in a symbolical greenhouse, in which the characters are enclosed. That is perhaps why the emotions and passions among them boil more fervently.” The costume designer Kateřina Štefková has drawn inspiration from the Rococo style, and her creations reveal a great sense of detail and originality. The sets, designed by Andrej Ďurík, allow for the space to be amply varied. In January 2019, he National Theatre Opera company is scheduled to perform the production within a tour of Japan. The new National Theatre adaptation of Le nozze di Figaro, to be premiered on 1 February 2018, is part of the Mozart triptych at the Estates Theatre in the 2017/18 season, with the other two instalments being a performance of Don Giovanni, conducted by Plácido Domingo (27 October 2017), and a concert version of La clemenza di Tito, under the baton of Marc Miknowski (10 and 11 May 2018). Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s music continues to be a source of endless joy for the Prague audience. On 27 January 2018, the National Theatre Opera will again celebrate the anniversary of the composer’s birth with the special annual Mozart’s Birthday concert, which sold out long in advance. This year, it has been organised in collaboration with the Antonín Dvořák International Vocal Competition in Karlovy Vary and will present exceptionally talented young singers, laureates of the most significant Czech contest of this kind between 2015 and 2017. • SALZBURG FESTIVAL 20 July – 30 August 2018
SALZBURG FESTIVAL 20 July – 30 August 2018 Final Report on the 2018 Salzburg Festival (SF, 28 August 2018) The Festival summer began 40 days ago with Penderecki’s St. Luke Passion – and there are two days yet ahead of us. The 2018 programme of the Salzburg Festival included 206 performances at 18 performance venues. Now the time has come to draw a summary of this summer, which was marked by works of passion, rapture and ecstasy. “To me, happiness means seeing productions grow, instead of being merely manufactured. It is possible to enter into a pact with the audience: by meeting it with the respect it deserves, by honestly challenging it, intellectually and emotionally. I am particularly glad that the audience also greeted the works of the 20th century with great empathy,” says Artistic Director Markus Hinterhäuser. “100 years after the constitutive meeting of the association to promote the building of a festival theatre on 15 August 1918, our programme has done justice to our political mission. Naturally, art cannot offer solutions for the problems of our time. Nor do we wish to issue cheap political statements along party lines. However, using our productions to inspire questions in these times of premature answers – that we have managed quite well. The fact that our audience received these questions with enormous interest only encourages us to continue our line of programming,” says Festival President Helga Rabl-Stadler. “We proudly look back on a season that was highly successful, both in artistic and economic terms. With a 97% ratio of occupied seats and 260,875 tickets issued, the festival was able to repeat the successful results of the previous year.

Chief among them were that magician of the theatre Max Reinhardt, the poet Hugo von Hofmannsthal, the composer Richard Strauss, the stage designer Alfred Roller and the conductor Franz Schalk. Through our Ouverture spirituelle under the sign of Pax — Peace we call back to mind in this anniversary year of 2020 that founding principle of the Festival as a project dedicated to peace.

  • Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Die Zauberflöte
SALZBURG FESTIVAL 18 July – 30 August 2020 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Die Zauberflöte Joana Mallwitz © Nicolas Kroeger An Interview with Conductor Joana Mallwitz (SF, 3 January 2020) Magic opera, singspiel, a comedy with spectacular stage effects, Masonic ritual with Egyptian mysteries, heroiccomic opera? Die Zauberflöte is heard more often and has been more frequently performed, discussed, queried and interrogated than almost any other work in the history of opera. In 2018 Lydia Steier directed the new production of Die Zauberflöte at the Großes Festspielhaus. During the centenary, she presents a new version at the Haus für Mozart. The narrator guiding the audience through the action will be Roland Koch. The awardwinning conductor Joana Mallwitz will conduct the opera, thereby making her Festival debut. She conducts the Vienna Philharmonic and the Concert Association of the Vienna State Opera Chorus. Tareq Nazmi takes on the role of Sarastro, Brenda Rae that of the Queen of the Night. Mauro Peter will revive his 2018 portrayal of Tamino; Regula Mühlemann sings his Pamina. Adam Plachetka and Maria Nazarova again transform themselves into Papageno and Papagena. Ilse Eerens, Sophie Rennert and Katarina Bradić sing the Three Ladies. The three boys will be embodied by three members of the Vienna Boys’ Choir. The premiere takes place on 3 August 2020. SALZBURG FESTIVAL 18 July – 30 August 2020 Ms. Mallwitz, Die Zauberflöte has a long tradition at the Salzburg Festival – it has seen 227 performances of the opera in the course of its history, making it the most frequently performed opera at the Festival. Have you explored past Salzburg interpretations of the work? Do you let them influence or even inspire you in any way? There is hardly any other work reflecting the zeitgeist and taste of different generations so clearly through the history of its interpretations as Die Zauberflöte.
