  • Welcome to the Seventh Annual Hawaii International Conference on Education
2009 Hawaii International Conference on Education Honolulu, Hawaii Welcome to the Seventh Annual Hawaii International Conference on Education Aloha! We welcome you to the Seventh Annual Hawaii International Conference on Education. This event offers a rare opportunity for academics and other professionals from around the world to share their broad array of perspectives. True to its primary goal, this conference provides those with cross-disciplinary interests related to education to meet and interact with others inside and outside their own discipline. The international attendees to this conference bring a variety of viewpoints shaped by different cultures, languages, geography and politics. This diversity is also captured in the Hawaii International Conference’s unique cross-disciplinary approach. The resulting interaction energizes research as well as vocation. With Waikiki Beach, Diamond Head and the vast South Pacific as the backdrop, this venue is an important dimension of this conference. For centuries a stopping place of explorers, Hawaii has historically been enriched by the blend of ideas that have crossed our shores. The Hawaii International Conference on Education continues this tradition in the nurturing spirit of Aloha. Along with its ideal weather and striking beauty, the Hawaiian Islands provide natural elements to inspire learning and dialogue. The 2008 conference was a great success. We hosted more than 1,200 participants representing more than 40 countries. Thank you for joining the 2009 Hawaii International Conference on Education! The 2010 Hawaii International Conference on Education will be held January 7 – 10, 2010 at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa and the Hilton Waikiki Prince Kuhio Hotel in Honolulu, Hawaii.

263 rd COMMENCEMENT MAY 20, 2019 20, MAY R D COMMENCEME 263 NT CLA S S O F 2 019 M A Y 20, 20 1 9 CLASS OF 2019 KEEPING FRANKLIN’S PROMISE In the words of one elegiac tribute, “Great men have two lives: one which occurs while they work on this earth; a second which begins at the day of their death and continues as long as their ideas and conceptions remain powerful.” These words befit the great Benjamin Franklin, whose inventions, innovations, ideas, writings, and public works continue to shape our thinking and renew the Republic he helped to create and the institutions he founded, including the University of Pennsylvania. Nowhere does Franklin feel more contemporary, more revolutionary, and more alive than at the University of Pennsylvania. His startling vision of a secular, nonsectarian Academy that would foster an “Inclination join’d with an Ability to serve Mankind, one’s Country, Friends and Family” has never ceased to challenge Penn to redefine the scope and mission of the modern American university. When pursued vigorously and simultaneously, the two missions – developing the inclination to do good and the ability to do well – merge to help form a more perfect university that educates more capable citizens for our democracy. Penn has embodied and advanced Franklin’s revolutionary vision for 279 years. Throughout its history, Penn has extended the frontiers of higher learning and research to produce graduates and scholars whose work has enriched the nation and all of humanity. The modern liberal arts curriculum as we know it can trace its roots to Franklin’s innovation to have Penn students study international commerce and foreign languages.

  • Mandyeng Festival of Berom
MANDYENG FESTIVAL OF BEROM Samuel Y. Davou Introduction Cultural festival is a portrayal of diverse cultural activities of a people, as well as their glamour of monumental merriments, usually with displays of various aspects of the people‟s culture in form of music, dance, dressing, occupation and religion of the people. This is periodically celebrated with the intention of sustaining cultural heritage, activities and development. Cultural festivals are mirrors of a community; they market its values through a celebration that serves as a unifying force which binds the people and their ways of life. In further description, a festival is an event, a communal observable fact, and practice in almost all human cultures. In such events, there are usually a variety of colorful displays of drama, music and dance. In such displays, there exist certain innermost meanings underlying them; the chronological ancestry as well as the involvement of the natives, members of neighboring communities and casual visitors to the event whose presence makes it a pure tourist affair (Falassi, 1987 and Abioye, 2017). Traditional African festivals, in general, are deliberate concepts that are carefully planned by the traditional institutions in communities. In the case of the Berom people of Jos Plateau, the Dagwoms (district heads) of various borough in consent with the Bedamajei (village Heads) and clans found in the community will agree on a fix date for the festival, This will involve cleansing and reconciliation, libation, jubilation, horse races, merrymaking, marrying, fun fare and Hamlets organizing music and dance groups. Ogunba, (1987) opines that: Festival rites are important for several reasons: first, they are the chief media of the religious expression of the people.

  • A Bibliography of the Bible in Africa
A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE BIBLE IN AFRICA Grant LeMarquand Trinity School for Ministry Ambridge, PA USA This bibliography is an updated version of a listing which was first published in 1993. The present version is an attempt to list all known works of biblical interpretation produced by Africans, for Africa, or about African interpretation. Included in this version is a listing of book reviews and abstracts which have appeared in various publications describing many of the works listed here. The listing of reviews and abstracts may prove to be especially helpful in cases where it is difficult to aquire a copy of the original essay or book. Although this work has the purpose of being comprehensive, it is probable that I have missed numerous items which should be included in this list. I wish to apologize to any whose works have escaped my attention. The bibliography is divided into five sections. Section one lists bibliographical sources. Some of these sources are periodical publications which should be consulted for future contributions to the growing corpus of works of African exegesis. Although there are few annotations in other parts of the bibliography, this section is quite thoroughly annotated. The second section is entitled “Studies of the Use of the Bible in Africa / Hermeneutics.” Works in this section elucidate various aspects of biblical interpretation in Africa, especially the relationship between culture and interpretation. The third section lists works on “Africa and Africans in the Bible.” Since this division of the bibliography deals with texts which have received extensive treatment from non- Africans, many more works could have been listed I have included only those publications written by Africans (including Africans of the ‘diaspora’) and any others who focus on the ‘Africanness’ of the texts in question.
