A Time for Sharing Over the years a number of friends have honored me with invitations to celebrate different holidays with their families. I have enjoyed each experience greatly and also noticed some beautiful similarities. When possible, families spend the holidays together. My friends all celebrate with light. They light candles, lamps, fireworks, a bonfire, a fireplace or colorful electric lights. All of their celebrations involve a feast or end with a feast. All of my friends share stories about their faith with their children. This month’s list includes some of my favorite children’s holiday stories and feast recipes from around the world. I hope you find something here to share with the people you love. Wishing you peace, joy and good health in the new year, --Ms. Furey Diwali November 12-16, 2020 Diwali November 12-16, 2020 Let's Celebrate 5 Celebrate Diwali: Diwali: Diwali Special: Days of Diwali! • Tet the Vietnamese New Year Normally Vietnamese, Chinese & Other Oriental People Use the Same Calendar As the Rest of the World
Tet - The Vietnamese New Year Normally Vietnamese, Chinese & other oriental people use the same calendar as the rest of the world. But they also follow a lunar calendar that they consult often when scheduling life-events that they want to insure are blessed with good luck. The Vietnamese calendar like the Chinese calendar began in the year 2637 B.C. It is 355 days long and consists of 12 months that are 29 or 30 days long. About every three years a thirteenth month is added to maintain balance. In Vietnam, the calendar was devised based on the regularly changing phases of the moon. Most Vietnamese, even city dwellers and overseas Vietnamese, have a lunar calendar in their homes to consult for festivals and auspicious dates. Because of the use of the lunar calendar, the actual days of the New Year vary from year to year. The equinoxes and solstices that marked the beginning of the European seasons were taken as the midpoint by the Asian calendar with the result that each Vietnamese season begins six weeks earlier than its European counterpart. Tet, in the Vietnamese language, symbolizes the very first morning of the New Year in Vietnam and is popularly known as the Vietnamese New Year. Also known by the name of Nguyen-Dan, its celebrations lasts for about 7 days. The celebrations of the Vietnamese New Year involves a lot of excitement and enthusiasm and is it is regarded as one of the most popular festivals of the year among the Vietnam people. The happiness associated with Vietnamese New Year can be attributed to the fact that this particular festival brings along one of the most desired break in the agricultural year for the Vietnamese people.

  • Bûche De Noël Pronounced: Boosh / Duh / Noh El
Bûche de Noël Pronounced: boosh / duh / noh el From Debra F. Weber, frenchfood.about.com/cs/dessertcoffee/a/buchedenoel.htm?terms=buche+de+noel Classic French Christmas Dessert The origins of this most famous and delicious of French pastries can be traced back to the ancient Celtic tradition of celebrating the winter solstice. On this day, the shortest of the year, the Celts would search for a large trunk of either oak, beech, elm or cherry and would burn it. The burning log was a symbol of the rebirth of the sun as well as an offering of thanks to the sun for returning to the earth. This pagan tradition was not snuffed out by the Catholic church and during the middle ages the logs and the ceremony of the burning log became more elaborate. The logs themselves would be decorated with ribbons and greenery. Then the youngest and the oldest member of each family would carry the log to the hearth and set it ablaze. It would burn through the night and the ashes would be collected the next day to be used during the year. They were thought to help cure various sicknesses and protect the house from storms, lightening and the evil powers of the Devil. The tradition of actually burning the log began to disappear with the arrival of small stoves and the disappearance of large hearths. The big log was replaced by a smaller branch that was set in the middle of the table and surrounded by little "friandises" (sweets, delicacies) that were given as treats to guests.

Festivals of Light Diwali FESTIVALS OF LIGHT LEARNING ACTIVITIES CHRISTMAS AND DIWALI Teachers and leaders can adapt the following to suit their own needs. The methodology that worked best on the pilots was ‘circle time’. For more information about methodologies that build a positive learning environment please see the chapter on group work and facilitation in Lynagh N and M Potter, Joined Up (Belfast: NICIE, Corrymeela) 2005, pp 43 – 86.
