Seminal recordings included: David Bowie’s Young Americans; The Rolling Stones’ “Hot Stuff,” “Miss You,” “Dance Pt.1,” and “Emotional Rescue”; KISS’s “Strutter ’78,” and “I Was Made For Lovin’ You”; Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy“; and Elton John’s Thom Bell Sessions and Victim of Love. Though disco-rock was a great commercial success during the disco era, it has received limited acknowledgement in post-disco scholarship. This thesis addresses the lack of existing scholarship pertaining to disco-rock. It examines both disco and disco-rock as products of cultural shifts during the 1970s. Disco was linked to the emergence of underground dance clubs in New York City, while disco-rock resulted from the increased mainstream visibility of disco culture during the mid seventies, as well as rock musicians’ exposure to disco music. My thesis argues for the study of a genre (disco-rock) that has been dismissed as inauthentic and commercial, a trend common to popular music discourse, and one that is linked to previous debates regarding the social value of pop music.

Despite being nearly blind, Tatum's dexterity made him an excellent player, as can be heard on the 1933 recording 'Tea for Two,' one of his best known songs.Ahead of his time, Art Tatum's techniques would contribute to the development of modern jazz, with aspects of his technique influencing musicians including Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, and Oscar Peterson. It was produced by the flamboyant Phil Spector using his 'wall of sound' technique. Here are The Crystals with 'Then He Kissed Me.'" She clicked the mouse, and the music began. Kristie Rydell had been one of the disc jockeys at WKLS Radio, a Chicago oldies station, for almost two years now. The music she played had been popular long before she was born. However, at twenty-eight, she probably knew more about the rock-n-roll of the Sixties than any of the other DJs at the station. There was a certain glamour, perhaps, in being a radio personality, but her enjoyment of this job went far deeper than that. She considered it a labor of love, for love was what she felt for this music. She believed it to be some of the greatest romantic poetry of all time. And she liked the beat. Her three-hour program was almost over tonight. It wasn't the most enviable of the time slots. She had the least seniority at the station, and it was a wonder that she hadn't been assigned the midnight-to-five block. Nine to midnight wasn't nearly as bad. But Kristie had a positive philosophy about her time on the air: she simply imagined that most of Chicagoland was listening, and that animated her presentation. Throughout its 60-year existence, Motown Records made an impact on the world thanks to music genius and founder, Berry Gordy. It's important to note though, that the African- American owned label wouldn’t have reached so many monumental milestones without The Supremes, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, Mary Wells, The Marvelettes, Tammi Terrell and Gladys Knight. The success of these talented women proved that women voices needed to be heard through radio airwaves everywhere. As a kid, you were probably singing melodies created by these women around the house with family members or even performing the songs in your school’s talent show, not even realizing how much of an impact these women made on Black culture and Black music. This is why it’s important to acknowledge these women during the celebration of the label’s 60th anniversary. The legendary reign of the Women of Motown began back in 1960, with then 17-year-old musical artist Mary Wells with her debut single, “Bye Bye Baby.” Wells, who wrote the song herself, helped Motown attain its first Top 10 R&B hit ever. Wells continued to make history with her chart-topping single, “My Guy” becoming Motown’s fourth No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and the company’s first major U.K. single.

    Legends Of Motown: Celebrating The Supremes Opening June 25 New Exhibit Features Rare Artifacts from the Premier Motown Records Act Founding Supremes Member Ms. Mary Wilson to Appear at the GRAMMY Museum June 24 For Intimate Interview and Q&A LOS ANGELES (June 5, 2015) — The GRAMMY Museum will explore the enduring legacy and influence of Motown Records' premier recording artists with the unveiling of Legends Of Motown: Celebrating The Supremes on June 25, 2015. The exhibit will offer visitors a unique look at the life and career of one of the most successful American singing groups of the '60s, the Supremes, through rare artifacts from the private collection of founding member Ms. Mary Wilson. On display on the Museum's third floor through spring 2016, the exhibit will feature rare photographs from the personal collection of Mary Wilson; concert posters; tour books, fan memorabilia; and an assortment of performance gowns, including: "Primette Pristine" gowns worn in 1961, one of the earliest sets purchased by the Supremes when they were still known as the Primettes "White De Mink" outfit worn on ABC's "The Hollywood Palace" in 1966 "Turquoise Freeze" dresses worn during a 1967 appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show" "Red Hot" gown worn by Mary Wilson on "The Ed Sullivan Show" in 1970 for the debut of the new Supremes lineup featuring Cindy Birdsong and Jean Terrell "We've been eager to feature an exhibit celebrating Motown since we honored Berry Gordy and Smokey Robinson at our inaugural benefit gala in 2013," said Bob Santelli, Executive Director of the GRAMMY Museum.
