G. Wells’ should not be limited to that of a British fiction writer. Wells advocated universal human rights and supported the engagement of broad public policy debate, and he often commented on the British government. His country had lived through World War I, the supposed “war to end all wars.” The roaring 1920’s arrived next, offering hope after World War I’s devastation. -

Inhuman Power: Infrastructural Modernism And The Fiction Of Social Form Abstract E.M. Forster’s imperative to “only connect” has long been read as modernist slogan for the rarefied depth of authentic interpersonal intimacy. Reframing the historical co-emergence of literary modernism and modern social science, this project tells a different story—not of connections between exceptional humans, but of connections between persons and environments. The prevailing canons of modernism have not yet grasped the internal complexity of early-twentieth-century debates regarding the interdependence of human and nonhuman agency. Early-twentieth-century sociologists like Émile Durkheim grounded both the autonomy of human culture and the disciplinary authority of sociology on the premise of species exceptionalism—the independence -

SAVING ENGLAND: ANN VERONICA, SEXUAL MORALITY AND NATIONAL REGENERATION1 Anthony Patterson Concerned about the erotic content of his novel The Trespasser (1912), D. H. Lawrence famously told Edward Garnett that he did not wish to be ‘talked about in an Ann Veronica fashion’.2 It is some gauge of the scandal Ann Veronica caused that Lawrence should worry about achieving the same kind of notoriety that Ann Veronica brought Wells. To a modern reader, this might appear surprising, as Ann Veronica does not seem particularly racy. It is certainly less sexually daring than many contemporary sex novels such as Hubert Wales’s The Yoke (1907) or Elinor Glyn’s Three Weeks (1907). Even John St Loe Strachey, a supporter of the National Social Purity Crusade and one of the novel’s most trenchant critics, commented ‘Ann Veronica has not a coarse word in it, nor are the “suggestive” passages open to any very severe criticism.’3 If Ann Veronica did not offend through franker sexual depictions, many critics still accused Wells of supplanting an old morality based on female sexual restraint and the sanctity of matrimony with a new morality of sexual freedom and self-indulgent individualism. Writing in the Daily News, R. A. Scott-James argued: ‘In effect he is content to negate the old morality as something out of date, effete, harmful, tiresome; he puts in its place a negative which masquerades as the supreme assertion of individuality’ (WCH, 157). Wilfred Whitten, writing in T. P.’s Weekly, referred to the novel’s eponymous hero as ‘a modern British daughter defying the old morality, and saying it is glorious to do so’ (WCH, 162). -

The world has been a subject to a large number of wars and battles. Specifically, the Second World War was a major destructive conflict that has left its effects on the international level. In this regard, numerous British authors of post- WWII era have been attracted to respond to the Second World War in their post-war fiction in order to portray its barbarism and devastation. He was the youngest of four siblings and his family affectionately knew him as 'Bertie'. The first few years of his childhood were spent fairly quietly, and Wells didn't display much literary interest until, in 1874, he accidentally broke his leg and was left to recover in bed, largely entertained by the library books his father regularly brought him. Through these Wells found he could escape the boredom and misery of his bed and convalescence by exploring the new worlds he encountered in these books. From these humble beginnings began a career that was, after several delays, to be seen as one of the most brilliant of modern English writers. Able to write comfortably in a number of genres he was especially applauded for his science fiction works such as The Time Machine and War of the Worlds, but his forays into the social conditions of the times, with classics such as Kipps, were almost as commercially successful. His short stories are miniature masterpieces many of which bring new and incredible ideas of science fiction to the edge of present day science fact. Wells also received four nominations for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Despite a strong and lasting second marriage his affairs with other women also brought the complications of fathering other children. His writings and work against fascism, as well as the promotion of socialism, brought him into increasing doubts with and opposition to religion. -

It was done while 1 I was completing Kipps. The intentions of the experiment I tried to make clear in my preface to the first edition, and from that preface I will repeat here as much as will still interest the patient reader. The method assumes an air of haphazard, but it is not so careless as it seems. I believe it to be the best way to the sort of lucid vagueness which has been my intention in this matter. I tried over several beginnings of a Utopian book before I adopted this. -

Wells’s A Modern Utopia Richard Nate The Utopia of a modern dreamer must needs differ in one fundamental aspect from the Nowheres and Utopias men planned before Darwin quickened the thought of the world. Those were all perfect and static States, a balance of happiness won forever against the forces of unrest and disorder that inhere in things. One beheld a healthy and simple generation enjoying the fruits of the earth in an atmosphere of virtue and happiness, to be followed by other virtuous, happy, and entirely similar generations, until the Gods grew weary. Change and development were dammed back by invincible dams forever. But the Modern Utopia must be not static but kinetic, must shape not as a permanent state but as a hopeful stage leading to a long ascent of stages. -

Wells’ The Time Machine: Beyond Science and Fiction By Allie Vugrincic A weary, red sun rises over a distant planet—or perhaps our own planet, thousands of years in the future—as the new mankind breathes in the crystalline air of their pristine society. A rocket burns a pathway against a background of stars. Science challenges the human mind’s potential ability to travel in time and space. There is something utterly captivating in an idea that can inspire the reader to look beyond themselves into a universe overflowing with fantastic or horrific possibilities—possibilities that seem just barely beyond the longing grasp of humanity. This is the essence of the literary genre of science fiction, a genre defined by its exploration of the seemingly impossible via the expansion of modern technology. Science fiction is willing to go beyond the boundaries of time and space to transport readers into the distant future, to new planets, and even to alternate realities.
