Une vision où la force des Jeux serait employée à inspirer un changement durable, à remettre le sport à une place d’honneur et à attirer vers lui un plus grand nombre de jeunes. Une vision qui répondrait ainsi aux nouveaux défis rencontrés par le sport, l’organisation et la participation sportive en ce XXIe siècle, et qui transformerait une communauté entière de l’est londonien. Cette vision de Londres 2012 a été pensée pour optimiser le potentiel des Jeux et du Mouvement olympique comme facteur positif de changement social, économique et sportif dans les villes hôtes et au-delà, et comme catalyseur de la transformation communautaire, de la collaboration internationale et de la Lord Coe bonne volonté d’une société moderne. Président du comité d'organisation des Jeux Olympiques Avec le soutien et l’implication de la commission exécutive du CIO, du président et Paralympiques de Londres de la commission de coordination Denis Oswald, du directeur exécutif du CIO pour les Jeux Olympiques Gilbert Felli, des membres du comité et du personnel du CIO, des fédérations internationales et des Comités Nationaux Olympiques, du gouvernement britannique et du maire de Londres, de l’association olympique britannique, de nos partenaires et sponsors, la vision des Jeux de Londres 2012 est aujourd’hui une source d’inspiration concrète qui a déjà touché les vies de millions d’individus dans la ville et le pays hôtes, ainsi que dans le monde entier. Les Jeux de Londres 2012 ont redressé le moral du peuple et de l’économie britannique et unifié le pays. Les représentants de communautés, de l’éducation, de la culture, des affaires et les dirigeants politiques ont qualifié l’esprit des Jeux, la rénovation de l’est londonien autour du nouveau Parc olympique et les exploits des athlètes de sources d'inspiration. Elles sont devenues des exemples d’accomplissements possibles grâce au travail d’équipe, au partage d’un même objectif et d’une vision commune pour répondre à des défis majeurs et saisir les opportunités offertes par la période post-olympique. The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games Limited 5 L’ensemble des opérations de Londres 2012 est le résultat d’une organisation et d’une préparation intensive par des équipes bien entrainées. Elles ont reçu leurs pouvoirs et leurs responsabilités d’une direction dont la confiance dans le bon déroulement des Jeux provenait de stratégies et de planifications développées, testées et vérifiées avec attention. Londres a également énormément profité des connaissances accumulées lors des précédents Jeux Olympiques et les a utilisées pour réaliser une édition très britannique. L’approche fondamentale soutenant les sept années de préparation des Jeux de Londres 2012 était de respecter aussi strictement que possible notre vision et nos promesses. Cette vision était notre boussole tout au long d’une décennie de candidature et d’organisation des Jeux, dans un contexte de défis et de changements géopolitiques, communautaires et économiques constants. Elle nous permettait de rester concentrés, de garder notre cap et nous indiquait le chemin vers l’arrivée de cette course qu’était la préparation de Jeux destinés à toutes les communautés et qui inspireraient le monde. Le programme du LOCOG, « International Inspiration », a été conçu dans ce but : inspirer le monde. Il proposait des activités sportives et une formation aux techniques de survie à plus de 12 millions d’enfants et de jeunes, de toutes origines et de toutes cultures, dans 20 pays du monde. Cette formation comprenait des cours de sensibilisation au VIH et des leçons de natation ayant pour objectif de réduire le nombre de noyades dans les zones inondables du Bangladesh. Londres 2012 a également rappelé au monde les valeurs des Jeux, de l’esprit olympique et des idéaux de notre société moderne, sources d’inspiration intemporelles et universelles. Les foules qui se sont levées pour acclamer et rendre hommage aux athlètes de toutes nationalités en sont la preuve. Mais elle a aussi pris bien d’autres formes, comme cette rencontre fortuite, dans le métro londonien, entre Seb Coe, le président du LOCOG, et un Games Maker bénévole qui l’a remercié de l’opportunité de participer aux Jeux. Le bénévole a expliqué à M. Coe qu’il travaillait comme urgentiste lors des attentats de Londres en 2005, au lendemain de l’élection de la capitale comme ville hôte pour 2012. Il lui a dit avoir vu ce jour-là ce qu’il y avait de pire chez l’être humain, mais que travailler comme bénévole pour Londres 2012 lui avait permis de voir ce qu’il avait de meilleur à offrir. L’approche fondamentale soutenant les sept années de préparation des Jeux de Londres 2012 était de respecter aussi strictement que possible notre vision et nos promesses. Le plan des Jeux prévoyait tous les engagements fondamentaux pris à Singapour : des sites emblématiques pour des compétitions spectaculaires, l’atmosphère magique d’une ville cosmopolite, une expérience électrisante pour les athlètes et les spectateurs, des Jeux destinés à la ville et au pays hôtes comme à la communauté internationale, des Jeux qui élèvent les esprits comme aucun autre évènement sportif ne peut le faire, des Jeux qui font participer la jeunesse et qui l’inspirent, des Jeux qui laissent un héritage social, économique et sportif durable, des Jeux qui montrent pourquoi, au XXIe siècle, les valeurs olympiques et paralympiques sont toujours importantes. Notre plan détaillé nous a permis de mettre en place notre vision des Jeux dans le respect des délais et du budget, malgré la crise économique soudaine et prolongée qui a frappé le monde en 2008. Nous sommes fiers de pouvoir dire que le modèle londonien a inclus tous les programmes et les caractéristiques fondamentales promises à Singapour et qui ont rendu ces Jeux uniques, comme : – Diffuser une présentation des sports en direct et en rediffusé – Offrir une expérience riche pour les participants – Transmettre un héritage concret – Être une source d’inspiration pour la jeunesse – Proposer une expérience de ville hôte internationale – Réaliser des Jeux qui font participer toute une nation – Engendrer une participation active et non une réaction passive – Organiser des Jeux durables – Utiliser une technologie qui a connecté les Jeux au monde entier La concrétisation de ces éléments, différentiateurs clés pour la réalisation de Jeux mémorables, a façonné l’organisation de tous nos secteurs d’activités et de toutes nos opérations.     World Events/2012 Olympic Games London Hosts the 2012 Summer Olympic Games London, the capital city of England and the United Kingdom, is the Host City for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. The Games will be held from July 27 – August 12, 2012. In addition the 2012 Summer Paralympics, games for athletes with physical challenges, will also be hosted by London from August 29 – September 9 2012. In July of 2005, London learned that it had won the right to host the 2012 Summer Games, beating out the other finalists Madrid, Moscow, New York City, and Paris. It is the third time for London to host the games, after 1908 and 1948. A lot of hard work has gone on in London to prepare for this event. It takes years of planning to produce the Olympic Games by city officials, Olympic committee members, sports planners, architects, water managers, environmental experts, landscape architects, transportation managers, housing designers, financial managers, health and safety experts, information specialists and more. Thousands of details must be considered to provide for the approximately 10,500 athletes from about 205 countries, as well as over 5,000 team officials, thousands of media representatives and millions of fans who will travel to London or watch the games from home. The Olympic and Paralympic Game are the biggest peacetime event in the world. Some of the events for the 2012 Games will be held at locations outside of the city of London, because many Olympic sports require their own large and specially designed venue or facility. It is necessary for host cities of Olympic Games to find areas of land spacious enough for these special facilities.

    The sporting action is taking place across the whole UK. The 11 sporting venues outside London include improved facilities for Sailing at Weymouth and Portland on the south coast of England and the new Lee Valley White Water Centre for Canoe Slalom. Six of the UK’s world-famous stadia will host the Olympic Football Tournament, including Hampden Park in Glasgow, Scotland; Old Trafford, home of Manchester United FC; and the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales. A key element of London's bid was the commitment that the Games would result in a lasting legacy for the whole of the UK. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has commissioned a consortium led by Grant Thornton, including Ecorys, Loughborough University and Oxford Economics to undertake a comprehensive and robust 'meta-evaluation' of the additionality, output, results, impacts and associated benefits of the investment in the 2012 Games. The goals of the games were to honor the god Zeus, showcase the athletic skill of competitors, and promote good relations among Greek cities. At first, there was just one event—a footrace for men—and the games lasted only one day. Over the years, the games grew to several events, lasted five days, and included athletes from distant Greek colonies. No women were allowed to compete, and married women were not even allowed into the stadium as spectators. The games were usually held every four years—a period of time that came to be known as an olympiad—until 393 CE. The modern Olympic Games were created by Baron Pierre de Coubertin of France. The first modern Olympics took place in Athens, Greece, in 1896, with 241 male athletes from 14 countries competing. Since then, the games have been held every four years—except in 1940 and 1944, when they were canceled because of World War II—in a different place around the world. They have continued to add sports and participants. Women first competed at the 1900 games in Paris, France.
