Born in Charleville, Ardennes, he produced his best known works while still in his late teens—<a href=" <b>Family and childhood (1854–1861)</b> Arthur Rimbaud was born into the provincial middle class of Charleville (now part of Charleville-Mézières) in the Ardennes département in northeastern France. He was the second child of a career soldier, Frédéric Rimbaud, and his wife Marie- Catherine-Vitalie Cuif. His father, a Burgundian of Provençal extraction, rose from a simple recruit to the rank of captain, and spent the greater part of his army years in foreign service. Captain Rimbaud fought in the conquest of Algeria and was awarded the Légion d'honneur. The Cuif family was a solidly established Ardennais family, but they were plagued by unstable and bohemian characters; two of Arthur Rimbaud's uncles from his mother's side were alcoholics. Captain Rimbaud and Vitalie married in February 1853; in the following November came the birth of their first child, Jean-Nicolas-Frederick. The next year, on 20 October 1854, Jean-Nicolas-Arthur was born. Three more children, Victorine-Pauline-Vitalie (who died a month after she was born), Jeanne-Rosalie- Vitalie and Frederique-Marie-Isabelle, followed. Arthur Rimbaud's infancy is said to have been prodigious; a common myth states that soon after his birth he had rolled onto the floor from a cushion where his nurse had put him only to begin crawling toward the door. -

Christian Straubhaar-Jones: Understanding the Visuality of a Medieval Visionary: Fourteenth- Century Dominican Henry Suso’s Interwoven Concepts of Divine Image, Gendered Identity, and Epistemology (Under the direction of Ann Marie Rasmussen) This dissertation is a study of visuality in fourteenth-century Swabian Dominican Henry Suso’s works. It explores the novel intersection of literary hagiographical discourses, scientific visuality discourses, and negative theological discourses, from late antique Greece to medieval Middle East, Spain, and Central Europe, culminating in Suso’s Middle High German works. Suso was rare among monks in that he wrote quasi-autobiographically in addition to more standard theological tracts. Previous scholars discussing Suso productively analyzed his use of devotional images, but they have failed to note the impact of the scientific understanding of vision in his works. The scientific component came to the Central Europe through Paris, where Franciscan scholars like Roger Bacon were reading, synthesizing, and adapting then cutting-edge Middle Eastern physiology as part of their natural philosophy. -

This is only partly true, for several of the Beatus manuscripts contain illuminations that do not pertain to the Apocalypse but to other books of the Bible, though the text is absent. The Gerona Beatus, the most elaborately decorated of the Beatus manuscript family, is such an example, containing not only depictions of Old Testament stories but also a series of illustrations of the life of Christ not found in other manuscripts of its family. Produced in 975 AD, the Gerona Beatus continues the tradition of medieval apocalyptic thought in which the Antichrist was perceived of as embodied in the Muslim presence in Spain of the eighth through the fifteen centuries. As instruments of learning and meditation used by monks and other religious during the monastic practice of lectio divina, the Gerona Beatus illuminations functioned as more than simple graphic accompaniments, for they recreated a new narrative in which the reader could visualise the fulfilment of Biblical prophecies from both the Old and the New Testaments. -
