For more information, please contact [email protected]. spring 2005 volume 4 4 fetter from the editress “Staring at the blank page before you, Open up the dirty window, Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find...” Each time the lyrics of Natasha Bedingfield’s “Unwritten” play over in my head, I can’t help but be reminded of the seemingly unattainable goals I dream up for myself every day. Not just the dream, but also the struggle to make those visions real— to voice the words and feelings that no one else can— quickly becomes more tiring and frustrating than life itself. Compared to the size of the whole, the simple goal of being published in this unknown, student-run maga zine is but a small accomplishment. This becomes obvious, as this book may eventually (and most likely will) pass from your hand, the reader’s, to the ground, or a trashcan, or— if we’re lucky— tossed out of a third-story dorm window. But the Grimoire is more than just a magazine— it’s a monument on which is carved the legacy of hundreds of students. -

Three Hard Misses To Fifteen Kisses Melody Johnson “Hearts will never be practical until they can be made unbreakable.” ~The Wizard of Oz One Monday The basement was a dustier version of the wreck I’d ignored nine months ago. I stood rooted at the bottom of our basement stairs, transfixed in horror and clutching the cold, chipped, metal banister as I absorbed the monstrosity of what used to be my father’s bedroom. I couldn’t sort through this crap with a hired search and rescue team, an unlimited supply of Aderoll, and with my sanity intact even if I made a deal with Al Pacino let alone by the end of the summer, I thought miserably. Frank could have labeled each box with his harsh, slashing handwriting, taped their flaps securely with clear packaging tape, and stashed them in his girlfriend’s basement when he moved in with her nine years ago. He could have at least stacked them neatly and covered them with a garbage bag in the corner of Mama Margoe’s basement instead of leaving them scattered randomly over the cement floor to collect dust— a couple on the rug next to the slanted planks he’d used for book shelves, five in a precarious pile near the bed, one on the desk— so when he died last fall, Margoe’s claim that the boxes were, “just fine as they are, for heaven’s sake Patricia,” could have been legitimate. I hadn’t rummaged through them when he left. While he’d been with Susan it had felt like an invasion of privacy, as if he might have returned for them or might have needed them or might have realized that he belonged back here with us. -

Dugdale, a creative writing thesis submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment for the degree of Master of Arts in English Memorial University of Newfoundland April 2021 St. John’s, Newfoundland & Labrador. Abstract (200 words) OUT THERE IN THE DARK THERE’S A BECKONING CANDLE is a collection of interrelated short stories drawing from various generic influences, chiefly ‘weird,’ ‘gothic,’ ‘queer’ and ‘rural’ fiction. The collection showcases a variety of recurring characters and settings, though from one tale to the next, discrepancies, inversions, and a whelming barrage of transforming motifs force an unhomely displacement between each story, troubling reader assumptions about the various protagonists to envision a lusher plurality of possible selves and futures (a gesture towards queer spectrality, which Carla Freccero defines as the “no longer” and the “not yet”). Utilizing genres known for their unsettling and fantastical potency, the thesis constellates the complex questions of identity politics, toxic interpersonal-relationships, the brutality of capitalism, compulsory urban migration, rituals of grief, intergenerational transmission of trauma, &c., all through a corrupted mal-refracting queer prism; for example, the simple question of what discomfort recurring character Harlanne Welch, non-binary filmmaker, sees when they look into the mirror is demonstrative, when the thing in the mirror takes on its own life with far-reaching consequences. OUT THERE IN THE DARK…is an oneiric, ludic dowsing rod in pursuit of the queer prairie gothic mode just past line of sight on the horizon. ii General Summary. -

Kiss Me. Kill Me by Amejisuto Part One Xander walked through the streets of Sunnydale in the early hours of the morning, jumping at nearly every shadow and sound. His beloved Father had tossed him out of the house for the night for some slight he’d imagined. Xander knew it was just an excuse for his Dad to get rid of him so he could screw his latest groupie while his Mom was out of town. Normally he didn’t care, he was glad to get away from his so-called home. But this time he cared. Spending the night outside in beautiful Sunnyhell was a…a really bad thing waiting to happen. Buffy was off in L.A., visiting her Dad for the Summer and, while Willow’s parents may not give her a lot of affection, they didn’t leave her at home for the family’s month long tour of educational vacation spots. Giles was off in Watcher-land, filing reports on how Buffy had killed the Master. He wondered if he’d end up as part of an entry or a footnote. -

I think nothing human is alien to me.” — African writer, Publius Terentius of Carthage (a.k.a. “Terence”) Over the course of the past decade, a potpourri of buzz-terms has emerged in contemporary political vernacular. Some of these terms help us better understand the world in which we find ourselves. Others, however, reveal a fundamental misunderstanding of the subject-matter to which they have been applied. The latter is the case with the shibboleth, “cultural appropriation” (Cul-Ap). Typically used pejoratively, the contentious term has become fashionable amongst aficionados of political correct-ness. Extracted from the sudsy depths of academic lingo by the most obstreperous p.c. aficionados, it is now commonplace in the argot of those smitten with “propriety”. The feckless leveling of this accusation has sewn needless discord, and has served to undermine the integrity of public discourse. As we shall see, using Cul-Ap as a gauntlet rather than as an invitation serves to exacerbate the very problem its enthusiasts purport to solve. Instead of effecting inter-cultural comity, scorn for Cul-Ap only stirs up acrimony. How so? The vilification of Cul-Ap (tacitly) prescribes a regimen of cultural segregation, thereby setting the stage for contrived pique directed across confabulated borderlines against an imagined OTHER. In other words: The anti-Cul-Ap crusade is diametrically opposed to the most vaunted ideals of cosmopolitanism. -
